he really tried to be a good sport about it, but he truly doesn't seem to see it from outside the perspective of the eldest boy. 😂 and sure, the scene was the climax of the show, it was very serious, but also hilarious in the moment, I was howling and sobbing, alternately. anyone who hasn't watched Succession is doing themselves a genuine disservice. best 40 hours of TV ever made.

I think the casting director for Succession took into consideration not only acting skills but also mentality. I remember reading a piece on Succession which described how actors viewed the show. Jeremy said he was afraid that people see Succession as a comedy and not a drama, to which Kieran (the actor playing Roman) replied: "so it's NOT a comedy...?".

So Karl is late for lunch and I look out of the window of Per Se and I see him pull up in a metallic blue 1969 Corvette Stingray and he’s in a black suit and white shirt and black tie and Blues Brothers’ RayBans, and he walks in and sits down and orders a double Macallan on the rocks and sighs deeply and I say, so who are we today? And he says, “Hi. Great to meet you. John Molasses.” and he hands me a white business card that says ‘John Molasses - Private Investigator. I find people for lots of money.’ And I say, Hey John…this looks really creative so I’m all ears. Go on. And he says, “I’m really tired and I had ten stitches in my arm yesterday, but I’m on task. I just feel that this violent world is so exhausting and dangerous, but I’m a good guy who loves movies and Gandhi and homeless shelters. But I’m tired and world weary and drink whisky too often and wish I was born in 1956 and was Glenn Ford. But you know…I’m lonely and serious and intelligent and sensitive but I beat people up.” And then I hear some smoky late-night bar jazz coming from his phone, and I say, Karl…this really bad ‘Philip Marlowe’ schtick is old…it’s been done. It’s as worn out as Humphrey Bogart’s fedora. Are you practicing for a Hollywood audition for some lame-ass nostalgia series? And he says, “I gotta go. My home security camera at my seedy motel in Burbank where I live just sent me a warning. I think someone wants to rough me up. See ya buddy.” (….it beats the 6 o’clock news…)
