I recently saw a movie I hadn't seen in years...much to my amazement, it still held up. Here's my review of the 1986 "The Fly"!

The Fly is a very "draining" movie. You'll be exhausted after watching it and not need to watch again for years. That's not to say it's bad. Just the opposite--it's incredible. It's because it's so good and you're so involved in the story and characters that it has such an impact on you. It does NOT have a happy ending. It's similar to Requiem for a Dream how you feel after watching it. You watch someones life fall apart in a very graphic manner.

Well said. I just rewatched it after many years and it's definitely draining. The third act truly wrecked me. So much emotional depth in the characters, and everybody involved loses in the end. Combine all that with the body horror and it's a wrap. Very good acting my Geena Davis and Goldblum to suck you into their story. Definitely an experience I wouldn't want to go through again anytime soon.

The movie functions as an analogy of sorts to disease in general as well I think. The way that a brain tumour or dementia for example can just take hold of someone you love and very gradually, and irrevocably change them into a shadow of their former selves, while you have to wait for the inevitable.

Totally agree, and that's because practical effects, whrn they're done well, always stand the test of time and are way more emersive. With digital, technology always evolves, so moat of what looked great in the 2000s now looks kinda shaky and even the stuff that holds up isn't as captivating or impressive as practical, because you know it's a visual effect

YESSSSS. Thank you, Jeremy! This is absolutely my favorite horror movie, hands down. The practical effects are phenomenal, the psychology is gripping and disturbing, and indeed the descent of Seth's character is terrifying yet heartbreaking. Surprised you didn't talk about Veronica's dream sequence, though; no spoilers here, but that's the only scene that I have to look away from because it freaks me out so much. ono Overall, though, The Fly is most definitely one of the greatest, and Brundlefly will forever be the best movie monster. Well gee, now I have no excuse not to bust it out again for Halloween!

Absolutely love this movie, a favourite of mine and even though it's emotionally draining and sad, I've watched the fly many times and I always get emotionally involved in the love story and brundle's transformation is so well done, so many layers to it and the allegories it has a horror masterpiece in my opinion!

This is one of the few shining examples of a remake that not only does it right, but does it better than the original ever could. This is probably the single greatest character tragedy wrapped in a horror-transformation film ever put on screen. The direction, acting, music, visual style, atmosphere, and practical effects coalesce to make a memorable classic. It's the kind of deep-seated fear of grotesque inevitability, and the tragedy of that, which sticks with you long after the film is over. Masterful; without a dbout one of Cronenberg's masterpieces.

My dad took me to watch this when I was like 8 years old. I WAS A KID! To this day, he remembers that I was terrified and I had nightmares after watching this, and I'm like "yeah, I was 8 years old, what did you expect?!?". I remember covering my face in fear in that dark cinema by the end. ...and it was exhilarating! Best damn horror movie, I've watched it several times since back in the day and still gives me the creeps! The performance, the effects, the soundtrack, the direction... It's kinda cheesy but in a good sense! Recommended to everyone!

I watched The Fly when I was like 13, and that scene when Veronica was getting the abortion and Seth crashed through the window and stopped it scared the shit out of me. There were other scenes that were terrifying, but something about that abortion scene scared me more than anything else in that movie.

OMG Jeremy you're doing throwbacks!! I'm Busting Over Here - BUSTING!! Ok. I loved The Fly. I even loved the original Fly movie done in 1958 with Vincent Price...Vincent - amazing. But Jeff Goldblum is great in this movie. I loved the way they made him nerdy yet HOT. Which was Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park but in reverse - HOT yet nerdy. The Fly is almost like a creepy Limitless where the character goes from pathetic to incredibly great, but The Fly goes beyond that and takes it into totally gross!! One of my favorite scenes is when he is doing the documentary of how a fly eats. If they had of thought about a sequel, they could have done where scientists were trying to perfect his mistake to create the perfect soldier or something because before he morphed into an actual fly man he was strong, fast, agile, and ready to kill anything at anytime. But I'm glad you did this. Please do more classic reviews! In essence I loved what I've seen here and I'd love to see more! :)

Yes people. The Fly, The Thing and Scarface are all 80's remakes. But noticed how great they were. Most remakes back then were not done for money but a guarantee that you could make a better or equally impressive movie. They were a lot fewer remakes back then and most were great!

You know the (1986) The Fly is a perfect remake of the Vincent Price (1958) original & John Carpenter's The Thing is also a well done remake of the (1951) The Thing from Another World. another good review as always Jeremy have a great week. I think they should do remakes every 30 years after the original by a good director that loves the original and would work it's hardest not to ruin what the original created but to top it. P.S next do a review of the (1973) Soylent Green with Charlton Heston.

Is this the episode of Simpsons where Bart and the fly switch bodies?
@Igorcastrochucre
@Igorcastrochucre 7 жыл бұрын
Actually no, this movie is a re-imagining of the original The Fly (1958), in that one the man and the fly instantly switch heads (like in the Simpsons) and they must recover the fly to switch them back, in this one they don't know about the transformation as it slowly happens and they only take notice halfway, honestly this is the superior version in script, effects and tone, but the 1958 one has the better characters and cinematography.

I just saw it recently *ahem* more like last night when it was aired on the sci-fi channel and I have to say, it's still an incredibly GROSS and freaky movie. Saw the movie "The Thing" and "Aliens" before that and although "The Thing" seemed more gory, there was something much more terrifying about "The Fly" because of the hero slowly deteriorating until the end. It's like nothing I've seen before in other movies. Like ok the character, Seth Brundle, is not like some typical handsome guy (some might say that about Jeff Goldblum though haha sorry not for me) but a dorky but charming one yet him turning monstrous till the end is what makes this purely a classic horror. Great review!! 👍

I know that one of your trademarks are the nicely short length of your reviews, Jahns, but The Fly deserved better than five minutes. I concurr, it is horror perfection. It is, because it combines the two major elements that have to be combined : a) spectacular practical visual effects, and b) psychological terror... because the movie plays with one of human's deepest fears : losing control of our bodies, of ourselves. Brundle turning into a fly isn't very far from dying of a horrific cancer that turns our body into a mortal enemy. You can't do scarier than that. And since the directing, photography, acting and dialogues are masterful, well... there you have. A timeless masterpiece. My favorite horror movie along with The Shining and Hereditary. So I disagree when you suggest your viewers to choose it as their next Halloween movies : it's too good for that ! ^^
