this is a godlike movie. seriously imagine watching this in theatre in 80s and when the credits roll you would belike oh my god how could you end it there and make me wait for 3 years to see what happens next. thats insane
@Wlof258 жыл бұрын
First thing....how is this a "godlike" movie? Second thing....Ending on a cliffhanger is not a good thing for a movie, it depends too much on its future sequel.
@noc_yt8 жыл бұрын
Wlof25 well... it really depends on the quality of the movie. If we don't care about anything that's happening, then obviously a cliffhanger is not a very affective way to end the movie. But Empire was the middle of a franchise, which is the best point for your characters to be really down on their luck, making a cliffhanger is worthy ending. The cliffhanger was frustrating for fans at the time, but it works because the movie felt genuine in it's usage of it, like the film makers actually wanted the viewer to feel sad by the end of the film, where some movies only implement cliffhangers for the sake of getting people to see the next movie because they know their movie's not good enough to stand on it's own.
@Wlof258 жыл бұрын
0816Egg Some people would disagree, like Joss Whedon. If my memory serves me right, he said that movie needs to be self contained, or something like that and when you think about it, people are getting an episode, which they need to wait fro3 years to watch what is happening next, what can be frustrating. As for the quality of the movie. I think we can agree that it was a good movie for its time, but it aged. If I am to make a movie with those kind of dialog and acting, today, that movie would be laughed at and panned. We also have bad writing in the movie, pacing problems, plot holes and inconsistencies. When you take everything into consideration, obviously this movie cant be godlike movie, nor one of the best movie ever made, how Jeremy have put it.

I was 12 years old in 81. When I saw Empire for the first time and the credits started to roll at the end, I stood up and announced to everyone in the theater that they were making a third movie and that they had 15 minutes to do it. I would wait. I stood looking at the screen, looked at the projection booth, back to the screen, sincerely waiting for the third installment. That was my introduction to the concept of cliffhangers...and for the next 3 years, everyone in the world debated whether Vader was lying or not. And that's how it was.

I don't really see the problem with Qui-Gon being Obi-Wan's master. I mean, people can have multiple teachers in life. He simply learned from Yoda and was apprenticed to Qui-Gon later. It's not like people in real life have the same teacher from kindergarten to high school.

Anakin is 10 in Phantom Menace, but Padawans are not what Jedi start out as. You're supposed to have several years of introductory training as an Initiate before you can take the test required to become a Padawan. The reason they thought Anakin was too old was because he wasn't born into the Jedi way, so he might be too attached to the outside world to become an efficient Jedi.

Star Wars (1977)- 9.5/10 Empire Strike Back- 10/10 Return of the Jedi- 8.5/10 Phantom Menace- 5/10 Attack of the Clones- 3.5/10 Revenge of the Sith- 6.5/10 EDIT (1/11/2016): Okay, after recently rewatching all the film, my score for the original trilogy remains the same, but my scores for the prequels have changed thusly: Phantom Menace- 5.5/10 (bad, but not quite as terrible as everyone makes it out to be) Attack of the Cones- 2.5/10 (honestly one of the worst films I've ever seen) Revenge of the Sith- 4.5/10 (really not as "good", or "decent" or "passable" as everyone says it is. Worse than TPM, although still better than AotC) As for The Force Awakens- 9/10 But the one that everyone is dying to know is....... The Star Wars Holiday Special- 15/10
@joshdammit80569 жыл бұрын
I mostly agree with that but jedi needs a higher rating and phantom menace should be lower
@sofiaa16169 жыл бұрын
4th Dimention Studio Nah, I'm fine with how I rated those two. I think Phantom Menace is bad, but I also think people really tend to exaggerate just how terrible it is, mostly because they (understandably) are incredibly disappointed by it as a Star Wars movie. Looking at it objectively, just as standalone movie and ignoring the Star Wars title, it's still bad but it's far from the worst thing ever. It's nowhere close to Battlefield Earth or The Last Airbender bad. So I think it's more disappointing than it is objectively terrible. Return of the Jedi, while still enjoyable to watch, is an incredibly flawed movie. I'd be lying if I said that while watching it I tend to think of ways it could have been so much better. The only rating I'm kind of regretting is for Revenge of the Sith. I feel like I was a bit too generous with that one.

Have you trucking lost your mind?! Star Wars 3 is so damn better than 6/10, the choreography, the soundtrack, the final act, the story overall and palpatine’s way to turn Anakin to the dark side make it at least 7.5/10. The phantom menace and attack of the clones are objectively viewed at least at around 5/10, if only for the atmosphere and the originality.

So as I have noticed, a lot of "movie journalists" constantly hail Lucas as the guy who made Star Wars and deserves all of the credit. Hell, even Wikipedia accounts of Star Wars pre-production fail to ever mention that the script revisions weren't Lucas' idea. Here's what's actually true: Lucas can AND should be credited with the initial spark, and commended for the shit he put up with when filming on site. THAT'S IT. Everything else that was good about Star Wars is the work of everyone who isn't Lucas. They are the ones who made him revise the incoherent and bizarre script into a short and sweet story, they are the ones who kept Lucas' wild ideas in line, and they are the ones who he constantly worked to discredit because they didn't put up with his shit. If you've seen behind the scenes of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Lucas is a lunatic who tries to shove every idea he has into a movie. A lunatic with some really good ideas, but a lunatic nonetheless.

He did, the movie from the beggining establishes that Vader knows who Luke is and that's why he is going after him, but after Lucas changed the emperor dialogue he created a plot hole because god know why, now we're supposed to think vader only then realizes about luke which makes no sense since he is already frantically searching for him, why would vader go after luke if he didn't know who he is, the change in the special edition fucked it up, it was good before

I actually like the changed dialogue in the scene between the Emperor and Vader. It adds an extra level of intrigue to the movie. I thought it was obvious that Vader was lying to Palpatine about not knowing about Luke, since Vader wanted to use Luke to overthrow him.
@Evan154 жыл бұрын
Nathan that actually kind of makes sense... huh, didn’t think of it that way.
@jadenvanhess23413 жыл бұрын
It was actually confirmed that Vader was lying too. Between the events of A New Hope and Empire, it was actually Boba Fett who told Vader what Luke’s name was.
@rienjen3 жыл бұрын
Same boat. I mean, in the first scene you see Vader's obsessed with finding the Rebels, "That is the system, and I'm sure Skywalker is with them." So we are to believe that Vader senses a Force sensitive in A New Hope during the Battle of Yavin, and now the Rebels have a member who is named Skywalker...and he doesn't make the connection. And he's obsessed with this kid, who happens to have his last name, but doesn't realize it's his son until the Emperor...no. Vader was playing coy, trying to pretend he didn't already know. But I can see where that could be confusing if you don't sit there and jig-saw the dang thing together.

Saw this in the theater when I was 6 years old and I'll never forget how the audience erupted at the opening text crawl. I hadn't even seen the first Star Wars at that point, but could tell I was seeing something incredible. And even today, it's still an incredible experience. I think it's a true piece of art as well as a great piece of blockbuster cinema.

The part about Vader first learning of Luke is incorrect. Vader already knew and was keeping it from The Emporer that he knew. This is covered in the comics.
@Moviefan2k49 жыл бұрын
I remember when James Earl Jones was interviewed for the "Empire of Dreams" documentary, he mentioned thinking Vader was lying, upon reading that line in his recording session. Its still one of the biggest moments in the saga (so far), but I'm hoping "The Force Awakens" offers another one.

Yoda respectfully stepped in as Obi Won's master when Qui Gon died. The reason they did that instead of just letting Obi pass the trails, say his vows, etc, was because Qui Gon was killed and it would've brought out raw emotion in Obi so he would need a little longer with the training.
@MikeKaess9 жыл бұрын
I don't remember anything that has ever said that. It's more likely since we're retconning that Yoda pretty much trains every Jedi in something during their training time. You see him in AotC training a bunch of younglings with lightsabers. Further, Obi-Wan is known to stretch the truth a bit to fit his narrative (darth Vader killed anakin) and it's easier to say Yoda trained him rather than just saying Yoda is a good trainer. It makes it more personal.

2:50 - 3:20 I agree it doesn't make sense in terms of the movie. Remember also, when Captain Piett showed Vader the Hoth readings that revealed the Rebel base, Vader said "I'm sure Skywalker is with them." So clearly he knew he had a son before his talk with the Emperor, unless there's a Rebel strong in the Force who also just happens to have the last surname as him. I heard somewhere that Vader was just PRETENDING not to know when the Emperor told him, which would make sense since he wants to overthrow him, but who knows for sure.

I remember watching ESB for the first time when I was 9. I didn't get up for anything the whole time it was on, I remember being so shocked after the end of the movie that I ran to my dad and asked if Darth Vader was telling the truth. It is, to this day, my favorite movie of all time. We didn't own Return of the Jedi at the time I watched episode 5, but if we had I would have popped it into the vcr(remember those?) and watched it right after empire.

Guys, I need some advice. I've just finished watching the original Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back (for the first time and they are really good) and I'm going to watch Return of the Jedi after this. I'm doing this to prepare for The Force Awakens, as I've understand it's a sequel for Return of the Jedi. But I've heard that the prequels are not good. So if I've decided not to watch the prequels and just watch The Force Awakens after Return of the Jedi, is it okay?
@xXbspencerXx9 жыл бұрын
Watch the prequels. People exaggerate their content subjectively. They are not better than the originals but that are watchable.
@kylemoore24469 жыл бұрын
The prequels are optional. Sure they're not as bad of a film trilogy as people build it up to be, but watching it is just not necessary. The story telling isn't too great, the cinematography is bland, most of the action scenes go on way too long and it hurts many of the character's representations, though on the most part, the trilogy is pretty harmless. If you're just preparing yourself for the new Force Awakens movie it's the prequels aren't really necessary to watch.
@shah_rizal9 жыл бұрын
+Kyle Moore Okay, noted. Thank you
@tucker9329 жыл бұрын
+Shah Rizal George lucas said they the entire star wars story was really about darth vader and his tragic life. Anakin is the main character. The prequels start when Anakin is 9 years old and end when he inevitably turns to the dark side and becomes Darth Vader. So it is a pretty important part of the whole story combined. I would watch them if anything for the better light saber fights and learning about Anakin. They aren't as good but still watchable for sure. Hope this helped!
@buddy65849 жыл бұрын
The prequesl have no value. They just say stuff we already know and they ruin alot of the orignal StarWars morals. The Director of the Force Awakens said the the new films will be highly influenced by the Original films so they are the only ones worth watching.
@bobbyyon14358 жыл бұрын
1:53 Plus, the rebels had that big ass ion cannon that would have shot down any imperial ships. So yeah, ground approach with AT-AT's was actually necessary.
Frankly, this episode got the worst changes in the special edition. Not only the emperor stuff, no, the wampa thing killed the tension of the scene, because the fact that we don't see him, and we don't know where he is, we just see a bits of his boddy approching, that was enough and that was scary as shit. And even the window, it's less clostrophobique... THAT IS EXACTLY THE PROBLEM ! The all movie is supposed to be clostrophobique, it's the irony of this big universe, that we fell trapped either way so make a scene less clostrophobique destroy this artistic intention that make the movie so intense.

It captures the grand scale of what's happening and the emotions of all those involved the best of all the Star Wars movies IMO, and Anakin's final turning to the dark side was highly interesting to watch. In fact, I feel that with some more exposition 3 could function as it's own prequel to the originals

1:53 Yeah, this video came out 6 years ago, so I don't know how many people already pointed this out, BUT. I be needsin' to point this out, myself. They didn't just send a ship down there to hit the generator, cos the Rebels had themselves an ion cannon, and plenty of fighters (which actually, I just thought up, myself), at the ready. A heavy ground assault may have just been the best tactic they could use. It minimises casualties, and maximises damage.

an alternate version in the story I heard of was used during the "luke I am your father scene" and the part where luke says his lines "that's not true! ect" was his reaction to the alternate version of what vader said, which is "obi-wan never told you what happened to your father?" "he told me you killed him" "no, obi-wan killed your father" and I don't know why, but I actually liked the sound of that, its just if that line was actually used, I don't know certain scenes would have then played out

This movie really is one of the great movies of all time. Top 10 at least. Certainly worthy of a rating above "Awesometacular". A movie like this such be in the rarified atmosphere of "Uber Awesometacular". Or just "Empire Strikes Back Awesometacular". I am so happy the creative guys behind this movie are involved in the new one, even if the crossguard lightsaber is making an appearance - though even that is slowly, but quite steadily, growing on me. Being an Expanded Universe and SWTOR/KOTOR nerd, the idea of the main villain of the movie digging into the ancient history of the Sith and coming back with a proto-saber like that, among other things, is pretty fucking awesome when you really think about it. Probably see a lot more Sith Alchemy and all.

Allright, im gonna cheat a little and ask this pretty simple question: which segment from Empire was your FAVORITE? The Battle on Hoth, or The arrival on Bespin City scene? (from entering Bespin airspace to Lando's betraval). For me, the City in the Clouds segment NEVER fades out of my memory, from William's sweeping orchestral piece to the gorgeous cloud formations and Cloud City shown in MASSIVE scale!
