Something to be said about Crystal Skull is that, while The Last Crusade ended in sort of a open ended way, with the gang riding to the sunset towards their next adventure, Crystal Skull absolutely put an end to the franchise. One point i would like to add, Helena never interacted with Indy in a truthful, from the heart kind of way, she always had an agenda and was always using Indy in some way. Contrast her with Marion, Short Round, Henry Jones Sr, even the insufferable Willie Scott or Elsa the Nazi, they all (at some point) interacted with Indy honestly and spoke from their heart. Their interactions seemed organic and real. But Helena, even when she was pleading Indy to not stay in the past, she still cared nothing about Indy, she just all of a sudden cared about the flow of history. I cannot care about a godfather-goddaughter relationship if the goddaughter had not showed any hint of her caring about her godfather.

The reason No Way Home did so well with the nostalgia glasses is that it treated the legacy characters with respect. Tobey's spider-man got a happy ending at the end of his trilogy. His life isn't perfect, but he made it work with the girl of his dreams and he hasn't lost his spidey-spark. He isn't alcoholic, he isn't depressed, and he isn't a shell of himself that some Strong Female Character™ will replace. His story conclusion is treated with respect. Andrew Garfield is also treated with respect. He never got to finish his trilogy, so he's stuck in his second movie phase where everything sucks. He's lost his hope, he's lost his way. But he isn't a shell of himself. He's still a character with potential in a state of transition awaiting his proverbial third movie to pull him out of that slump and complete his arc. NWH works as a bridge to that hypothetical third movie because he's able to be a warning to Tom's Peter about going down a dark and bitter road while also getting some redemption of his own and regaining some of that spark. I don't know what Disney is smoking, but they need to trash it because all they know how to do is to take these franchises they purchased specifically for the audience those franchises usually bring in (the male audience) and then did the greatest heel-turn in history and shat all over the characters, making them depressed, broken shells. Life is already a like that. We're already like that. Men are already broken and male mental health is already ignored. Why do you think that we want to see that same real-world circumstance applied to our beloved hopeful space wizard or adventure-junkie professor?

My favorite was Last Crusade, exactly because of the dynamics between Indy and his father. Right below comes Ark, then Temple of Doom, and the fourth one. Sean Connery was only 12 years older than Harrison Ford. In Crusade, they did an awesome job of characterizing him as an old bookworm who couldn't keep up with his son's action antics, but had an important involvement in the plot because of his knowledge (in the form of the diary, and later his skills in interpreting the Grail Temple traps), and wits (the pen is mightier than the sword in the tank, the umbrella fight against the airplane, etc.) It was almost unbelievable that the same Spielberg who directed the first three movies also directed the fourth, which not only had the absurd fridge nuking, but also an old Indiana Jones exchanging punches with young ripe soviet soldiers. I really don't understand why they cannot just look at what they did with Sean Connery's character and try to do something like that with old man Indy. The pairing with a youngster thing gives a nice framing for playing the generational contrast. In Crystal Skull I think they missed the mark with Indy's son, his character was simply too annoying and boring. The idea of using Fleabag as his goddaughter should theoretically work, it should be only a matter of putting her front and center and moving Indy to the old mentor archetype and the two actors would make it work... Well, at least Phoebe Waller-Bridge should do it, she's terrific, Harrison Ford is kind of being typecast these days as a grumpy old man, but it should work.

I tend to call this “X-Files Syndrome”. A concept that had they brought it to a close at the right point, it would be something that could continue to live on and be admired in syndication (like Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul). X-Files could have continued on as occasional seasons - David Duchovny even said that "As far as I'm concerned, it's not over until one of us dies". In fact, the issues the X-Files had foreshadowed in the 90s - surveillance, biotechnology, AI etc. - had become even more relevant. The problem was Chris Carter. He couldn't distinguish between good and bad scripts, and he refused to drop his obsession with the mythos that just kept getting more and more bizarre. Or let someone else have more creative control. So in that case it wasn't like the series ran out of steam, it was that the creator lost his mind.

Say what you will about Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but it at least gave Indy a perfect ending, with him finally marrying Marion and having a newfound family with his son. Arguably every film gave Indy a 'perfect' ending. Indiana Jones doesn't need a 'definitive' ending like Star Wars because at its core it's an anthology series. That's what Indy 5 has missed - it's trying to portray itself as the film which is giving the 'final, definitive' say on the story when that was never the nature of the Indy films in the first place.
@Ali007572 Жыл бұрын
Mutt is killed in Nam, and Marion is divorcing Indy, they just wanted to create conflict so by the end he can connect with Marion again, so people have an artificial cute and emotional moment, in overall it only amplifies the fact that this movie is objectively unnecessary. Indiana Jones is a trilogy and I'll die on this hill. :)
@onemoreminute0543 Жыл бұрын
@@Ali007572 Crystall Skull is just another adventure. Everyone says that Last Crusade was the perfect 'definitive' end to the series, but what does that actually mean? The main struggle in that film was Indy resolving the conflict with his father - that wasn't a conflict in TOD or ROTLA. It's exclusive to TLC, there's not meant to be an overarching grand narrative from the previous films like in Star Wars. It's like the Bond films before Daniel Craig.

More than its competitors, Disney can withstand some of its movies functioning as loss leaders. In addition to racking up ticket sales, the studio's films are designed to boost interest in toys and theme parks. So although "The Little Mermaid" barely floated past the $500 million mark, the return of Ariel is helping to sell themed Legos, backpacks, dolls, bedding and nail polish. The same goes for underperforming Marvel adventures like "Ant-Man," which brings an influx of interest to Avengers Campus, a Marvel Cinematic Universe-themed area at the Disney California Adventure park. "They may not make it at the box office, but Disney will make up for it in merchandise sales and the longevity of the property," says Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitors Relations. "That's a lot different than Paramount or Sony, who needs to make all their money back at the box office."
@ArchLars Жыл бұрын
Little Mermaid and other MCU bombs don't do well _enough_ in merch sales because no kids who didn't watch it or watched it but spent most of the time on their iPads because the movies sucked so much are going to want a toy. This is different than the Cars franchise, they are expecting a _boost_ not a mostly same merch sale if they weren't making a movie at all. They expect these movies to both do well and the merch sales to do well in turn, that is what they aim for, when they don't get either or just average merch sales but a bomb in the box office then the movie is considered by most oulets to be a bomb, if everything was hunky dory with the new movies Bob Iger himself wouldn't literally be saying it was disappointing, he would be making the same flawed argument you are making but keep coping I guess.

But I saw everyone else getting their hopes up over James Mangold and I knew they were setting themselves up for disappointment. After the last 7 years I know how Disney and especially Kathleen Kennedy's Lucasfilm operates. It doesn't matter what big name director they get at the end of the day the one's calling the shots are the execs and the director will make the movie the execs want them to make. Why do you think Spielberg didn't come back? Because he knew that Kathleen Kennedy wouldn't let him have any creative control. Why do you think Lucasfilm has such a problem keeping directors and getting movie's made? Because none of them could deal with Kathleen Kennedy's controlling nature. The only one who could is J.J. Abrams who does whatever he is told and Rian Johnson who shares her sensibilities. As long as Kathleen Kennedy runs the show at Lucasfilm then this are the type of movies you are going to get. She is the common denominator in all of the problems Lucasfilm has had since it got sold to Disney and it doesn't matter what big name they get to make their next movie nothing will change while she is still there.

@shredd5705 Жыл бұрын
Yep Last Crusade is the best. Raiders, not in my opinion. First yes, best no. Sean Connery elevated Last Crusade above the rest, because it was not just about MacGuffin chase, but about a nuanced and realistic father-son relationship. (Good relationship in some ways, appalling in others) Temple of Doom is a bit too dark but more importantly I hated the female character

I think the whole film was building to Indy staying in the past. It would of made sense aswell, start a new adventure in a period he clearly loves - the happiest he is in this movie is when he talks about the past! - the world gets to continue to move on, but he gets his happy ending by remaining in the past where he feels he belongs. I mean I wouldnt be suprised if that was mangold original ending and Disney forced the ending we got to play it safe but that's me starting conspiracy theories. But yeah I really think it would of made much much more sense and actually good ending if it did ened with him remaining in the past as his world continues to evolve away from him.

I was thinking the same thing. I pictured the last scene of the movie at a modern day archaeological site uncovering some relics that tell the story of a stranger in a hat appearing from out of nowhere to save an ancient people, and becoming a hero/revered elder type to them, while the archaeologists uncover the remains of a fedora at a gravesite as the Raiders theme starts up.

James Mangold gave us one of the greatest blockbuster franchise sequels ever. It was a masterpiece in bringing back old characters and showing how time has worn them down and they’ve lost a lot of the shine and heroism they once had. To each their own. I was enjoying the film well enough. I didn’t grow up with Indy in my house, but I watched them as an adult and enjoyed the spirit of the film like you did with RRR. It’s completely nuts but the production design, top class CGI when it’s working, and the acting is all fantastic. I did not guess the twist at all and it’s pretty silly, but I kind of liked that Indy got a happy ending. It’s an 8/10 for me, B+ is not a bad time. It reminded me of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, where a film from the ground up is a weird concept (80 year old Indy still doing his thing for one last hurrah) but in terms of execution, this is the best we’ll get. You can tell James mangold poured his heart into it and it didn’t feel corporate compared to the marvel/Star Wars stuff. There’s a reverence to the material that’s not present in much of modern Disney, away from the circlejerking.
