I got to the series late, around the time MGS4 was coming out. And everyone saying it's a big deal is what got me interested. So I went in blind, played MGS1 and loved it. Then played MGS2 (again, knowing nothing, having no expectations) and... FFFFUCKING LOVED IT EVEN MORE! It's still my favorite one of the entire series.

if you consider that Kojima made this sequel heavily themed with control of information and illusion of choice by making you play as as unlikable rookie (nobody knew about) who idols the legendary solid snake...(the character you want to play as, deceptively taken from you)...AND trough the plot destroys the reality around him with a crapload of weirdness just to point out that what he is living (may be) just a VR simulation...like the very game you are playing pretending to be raiden, you kinda start to think just how genius MGS2 may be in the use of metalanguage...see how strange everything sounds via codec even to raiden himself from the beginning?? "raiden turn the game console off right now!"

And then we get to know about Raidens past, that he is actually more than just a figure for the players to control, at the end, Raiden throws away his dog tag with the players name on it to show that he has decided to not be a puppet anymore, that scene was powerful

Yeah after 2016, 2020, this game hold so well in fact that this would happen, kojima had this idea of the internet going full drive, the user taking advantage and being exploted like a product by the coperate. 2020 was anther hit storm, 2016 was unexpected shock effect. That any of us put preconceived notions can be flawed and bias. That's where after 2016 youtube or people were quiet and argument both ends going at it. People in their small little ponds, leaking whatever truth suits them in to the growing cesspool in society at large. Even before 2016 I did find this ending, game puzzling but very resonating. The game stood out for me becouse it's how it was worded. I got the idea that people in all kinds were diffrent but the medium or how its orgustrated by a narritive is not compatable too one another, its conflict in the polical level, the narrative buffers with a point of view, and they change over time. The real world is messy, and I've known my bias and others to know that we hold half truths or truth barriers, or not the complete story as we think. Mgs2 is like what that person said on wiki, it's too dame clever for it's own good.
@bobbybaker90597 жыл бұрын
MGS2 is by far the most unique game in the series. The themes of censorship and the like are extremely relevant in today's time. But what really gets me is the theme of "memes" and how it breaks the fourth wall. You play as raiden when you thought it would be snake... raiden thought Campbell was real when he was just an AI... everything about Vamp... everything about the Patriots... it's hard to know what's real and what's not. You and Raiden feel the exact same by the end of the game in that regard. But recall Snake's words at the end... this is paraphrased but to decide for yourself what to believe in. Whether it's right or wrong doesn't matter. Pick what you HONESTLY believe in, and pass THAT along to the future. MGS2 is simply a masterpiece
@FandeJay10 жыл бұрын
Ok, to understand my feelings about MGS2, there are two things I need to say about me: First: I'm an adopted child, and I never got to meet my biological parents. Second: I'm currently writing a dissertation paper on Cultural Dimensions in Language Acquisition. If you've played and understood MGS2, then you probably get why I consider MGS2 my favorite of the series. Granted, when I first played it, I was only 11 years old, and I didn't understand shit. But today, it's just a goldmine of information: it taught me so much about how to view myself, about who I could and wanted to be, about the choice of your own culture...so much that Hideo Kojima is on the bibliography of my dissertation paper. So yeah: MGS2 is probably the most elitist game in the franchise: it's abusively complex, it doesn't give you time to properly process the information it's feeding you, but if you give it a chance, it's just a philosophical marvel.

Later I noticed that another friend who records video game cutscenes and gameplay to make them look like a movie did that with the Metal Gear Solid games. MGS2 was a statement against MEME culture with the Tanker chapter acting as everything fans wanted from an MGS game, and the plant acting as a sort of commentary for Hideo Kojima's thoughts on fan boyism and fan expectations. That's why it was supposed to be the last game in the series. It was Kojima's way of saying "You don't need answers for everything. Make up your own ending. ". I think it was brilliant.

That's why I don't understand why no one took Raiden seriously, he fought all of those Metal Gears and beat them before he was a Cyborg. He seemed to have more trouble with the Gekko as a Cyborg than the Metal Gears as a full human.
@Gootothesecond10 жыл бұрын
ScarletSnake I think those were the earlier Rays so they probably don't have all of the upgrades we see later like the one in Revengeance and they were unmanned, they probably didn't want to give all of the power to something that could possibly have a software glitch and randomly fire a nuke or, worse yet, be hacked. Also, being an anti-Metal Gear doesn't necessarily mean it's stronger, it just may have an arsenal and abilities that can counter the common design of Metal Gears. From an eyeball test alone, Ray seems to be more maneuverable than Rex which may allow it to counter Rex's fire power with being be to out flank it. Question, The Patriots didn't originally create Metal Gears, right? I know that Russian scientist initially formulated the theory of Metal Gears but it was first created by Big Boss in Mother Base, right?

It's implied that he did posses Ocelot through Ocelot's unknown connection to the spiritual realm due to being the Sorrow's son, and this is what gave him the idea for his plot in four. In the last battle of four it's shown that he's removed Liquid's arm, which he would have no reason to do unless it really was causing him problems.

J Davis I think he should have made peace walker on ps3 instead of mgs4 and made mgs4 a next gen type of game like mgs5. That way he could have done so much more for the gameplay and the story for both games

Thanks for reviewing the MGS series! I've been a fan of Metal Gear for many years and I love your reviews, so watching your reviews of MGS is really cool. Thanks again and keep it up.

I'm playing through 2 at the moment (in preparation for 5) and although I couldn't stand the tanker part, the Big Shell parts with Raiden I am really liking. And I'm not all too far into it but already things about the story are starting to be really intriguing. There are certain plot points of the series that have already been spoiled for me but I want to fill in the rest of the main gaps and 2 from my knowledge has a lot of them between 3 and 4. And although the story can be really complicated and weird, I do actually really love these sorts of stories and is one of the reasons why Kingdom Hearts is probably my favorite game series cos of the extremely complicated story. Some people hate that in a game series but I personally think its great and from what I can tell, Metal Gear Solid is very much like that in its complexity and depth.

_ MJG _ Oh I finished it. Never has a game affected me to the point where my entire view on the world and life have been changed. As much as I was dreading playing MGS2, I ended up loving it even more than MGS1 cos of that ending. Kojima is a genius.

_ MJG _ I'm about to start 3. Then I'll play PW, then GZ, then V and THEN 4. I probably will play Rising (I know its hated a lot) but ONLY cos of the gameplay since I love Platinum games. The story I likely wont consider canon depending on how I feel about 4.
@MetaMikeG9 жыл бұрын
+ZantofDarkness I honestly can't decide which I love best between 2 3 and 4. each time I play them I like the one I currently finished the best. they have that affect. Rising even though different I actually really did enjoy and the story it creates for itself makes you care and is somewhat relevant to the overall series and Raidens back story. I really enjoyed Rising. anyways hope you enjoy the rest of the games

MGS2's biggest flaw is the La-li-lu-le-lo: it's a linguistic thing that really doesn't work outside of Japan. Those 5 syllables are the 5 L syllables that are missing from Japanese that lead to all the Engrish jokes. The metaphor is "those who cannot be named" or something to that extent. They're undefinable, in a very literal sense. To English speakers who haven't studied Japanese linguistics, or have n degrees of separation from people like that who figured it out (I'm not the linguistics guy, I have n degrees of separation from that guy - you have N+1), it just makes no sense. The Japanese audience probably got it immediately, maybe the younger people who technically weren't old enough to play it. And personally, I loved MGS2 the first time I played it. But then, it was my introduction to the MGS series (with the benefit of someone who'd been paying attention to all the hype marveling at and bemoaning all the changes). Starting with 2, your expectation of the whole series is that there;s going to be an odd lilt on everything. And really, going back to 1, it has that lilt, too, it's just tucked in a corner. Tuxedo Snake, C4ing guards backs...trust me, it's there.
@rashkavar10 жыл бұрын
Maximus-Kanic I can't take credit for it - picked it up on the wiki. I have watched enough subtitled anime to notice that English loan words are rather obviously lacking in L sounds (particularly noticeable when the one European/American character is "Ellen" or something like that)
@theoneandonlymichaelmccormick10 жыл бұрын
C'mon man, haven't you played Snake Eater? The password for ADAM and EVA was after snake day's "who are the patriots" they respond with "La-Lay-Liu-Lay-Lo". It makes sense, trust me.
@rashkavar10 жыл бұрын
Michael McCormick Keep in mind that Hideo Kojima originally intended the series to end with MGS2. The reason the plot is so strange and confusing in its presentation is that he intended to provoke a lot of interesting questions. He was dragged back to make 3 and 4 because the series was such a success by that point. I suspect the password for "who are the patriots?" was a throwback, the way Raikov and the mask are. And actually, the way that scene with EVA plays out - her inability to say La Li Lu Le Lo - kinda reinforces the whole idea of it the phrase being unspeakable. Come to think of it, it parallels the tetragrammaton concept in theology - the 4 letters that create something unpronouncable (the hebrew alphabet's equivalent of YHWH)...point being that God cannot be defined by an earthly name. Hideo Kojima has since proven that he's not above blasphemy (to the point where there are easter eggs claiming he's God in some of the games), so perhaps that is essentially what he was getting at...after all, the Patriots at that point have a nearly godlike level of influence on the world.
@togokun144910 жыл бұрын
rashkavar Woah, I like that explanation for La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo, but EVA inability to say wasn't really an inability, right? It's just she didn't knew the password.
@rashkavar10 жыл бұрын
Togo Kun True, but why? Sure, she probably wasn't the real EVA, but the thing with Sokolov suggests, as I recall, that she's been in place for some time now.

Playing through MGS2 when I was a ten-year-old admirer of my all time favorite videogame character Solid Snake was a real adventure back in 2007. At the time, I was obsessed with MGS1 and really waiting to get a PS2 and see my hero back in action again. And so the trip started: I was thrilled to experience all the new aspects that the genius of Kojima added to his series, again revolutionizing videogames forever. The gameplay just got better, there's a lot more for the player to do, the music and the camera were at their best, and and my brain didn't entertain the weird idea of possibly playing a whole game in a Taker as long as I've been walking around, putting guards to sleep and dragging their bodies to hide them lockers. But then, after one of the most thrilling cut-scenes I've ever seen-- combining twists,brilliant voice acting, and lots of action with Snake,Liquid, and Ocelot-- I was surprised to find myself playing as this blond haired acrobat named "Snake" at first ( which made me think " Oh, don't you dare calling this rookie "Snake" ) and then "Raiden". So going through the game in the amazing and massive Big Shell looked like all about longing to go back to playing as Snake. But then I got used to Raiden and I started kind of liking him, until at some point, I met Pliskan.. And wow.. the game took a whole new turn for me ever since; I instantly knew it was Snake, but I never knew I was still not going to go back playing as him.. ever. As the game proceeded, it was still all about Snake for me even though I kept up pretty well with Jack and enjoyed the game being him. Thus, I've experienced what Hideo said to be his goal when he made us play with Raiden and yet still interact with Snake, and that is to see our the legend from a different perspective, as a different person who might yet be even more than what we thought he was. I've seen a humble, deeper, and wiser side of Snake I maybe would've not discovered if I wasn't playing as Raiden with all the codex calls, that scene you've mentioned, and the words of wisdom towards the end of the game on Arsenal Gear. And for that, I think Hideo Kojima is an absolute genius and I salute him. Adding to that all the weirdness you've mentioned, the amazing boss fights ( though the MGS1's were slightly better ), the variety of modes that suite all kinds of players, how brilliant the European Extreme mode was, the deep sense and life lessons in its plots, main characters and their stories, the music, the sadness in deaths..I could go on all day talking about how beautiful this game is... I'll admit though that beating the game in normal mode offered very little challenge even for a ten-year-old kid but thank god the EE mode saved it. And I'll also admit that the plot was hard for me to understand at the time, but that was probably due to my young age, and even when I had beat it two years ago, it wasn't all crystal clear to me so I did it one last time in European Extreme and loved every single detail of the masterpiece.

I know the video is old, but I recently played through MGS2 and I actually loved it. It was strange but in a good way. A challenging and interesting journey with many questions. I think I am that kind of rarity that actually does love Raiden and his role in MGS2. I see Raiden as a place-holder for the player. He acts in a way that probably anybody who has his first serious spy-mission would do. He is green, he acts emotional and most importantly: He grows up during the game. I love Raiden (not more than Snake, I love both of them) and enjoyed playing him in MGS2 and Metal Gear Rising. Now I am looking forward to play MGS3 and MGS4 some day

Kojima admited he has no future plans when he writes his stories. MGS4 is clearly trying to tie all the loose ends that he created due to this. Do not try to rationalize MGS2 as the pre-planned setup to future storylines

That reference is also very important story wise since MGS1 had two endings. One where Meryl dies and you get the stealth camouflage from Otacon and one where they both live and you get the bandana. This reference was included to establish witch of those ending where canon. Another funny thing about that scene is the fact that bandana and infinite are the same word in Japanese. So during the Japanese dialogue when Snake pointed at his bandana he literally said "bandana ammo".

I prefer mgs 2 over mgs 1 any day. Gameplay wise it’s a lot better. It’s a lot more fun. I like the story a lot more and I love the plant more than shadow modes (sorry). Snake or no snake, the game still plays like mgs.

He was supposed to be. Kojima made MGS1 as a deconstruction of the action movie genre that backfired and made Snake one of the most iconic characters in gaming. MGS2 was supposed to deconstruct player expectations and human culture, so he teased nothing but Snake in the trailers but ended up giving us Raiden, who is a representation of the player; People wanted to play as Snake again, and Raiden wanted to be as badass as Snake. There's a video I found a few months ago that goes into extreme analysis about everything the game does. It's called "Critical Close-Up Metal Gear Solid 2" by "Super Bunnyhop". It does a good job explaining all the mind fucks the game gives you towards the end, as well as the roles that Snake and Raiden play.
