My brother and I actually looked at each other when the Mandarin revealed himself like "Seriously, they *had* to do a bait and switch?!" The only good side to that was that Ben Kingsley looked like he was having fun. If an actor is clearly enjoying themselves, then it makes it enjoyable. We aren't big Iron Man fans and that got on our nerves.

Here's my history with Iron Man: I wasn't familiar with Iron Man in any medium whatsoever until I saw the first Iron Man movie. Ever since then, I started to get to know who the villains are. And when I learned the Mandarin was in this movie and he's considered to be Iron Man's greatest nemesis, I want to see how much of a great he would be, especially he was being played by Kingsley.And then when that twist came up I was like, "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!" Yes, I'm one of the few people, who never grew up in the Iron Man lore, not only hated the twist, but despised it as well.

I see what Marvel was trying to do with the Mandarin..I think it would've worked well if Iron Man wasn't based off of a comic book or atleast if this Mandarin wasn't based off of the comic book villain. But since it is, it feels like its just disregarding the awesomeness of the original Mandarin. Decent attempt but staying closer to the original material would've probably worked better.

+Solomon Beckles Let's say the trailers of IM3 says that the villian would be the "Samurai" WITHOUT building this character up with badass lines, badass costumes and a badass actor; then they do the twist. In this case I would be okay with it. Sadly, the reality is that A) Marvel bastardized an iconic villain, and B) Marvel promised me that they would NOT bastardize said villain in the trailers, with all those badass lines and shot that were not even IN the movie. I personally may love CA2TWS and GOTG, but IM3: never forgive, never forget.

There’s nothing wrong with the twist in itself. As Jeremy pointed out, it’s really not all that different from Batman Begins. The problem lies in that they took away an intimidating villain and left us with... Killian. Had Killian actually been an intimidating and charismatic villain with the same gravitas as Ben Kingsley, there would have hardly been any complaints. Also, I like the one-shot concept of “there is a real Mandarin out there”. It sucks that the Iron Man series has concluded, especially since they have introduced sorcery into the MCU with Doctor Strange, I think a 4th Iron Man movie with the real Mandarin, and featuring Strange as a backup character (like Hulk in Ragnarok), would have worked perfectly.

At first, I wasn't a fan of IM3. In retrospect, I realize the scene in question was actually a brilliant plot twist. It raises this modern notion that sometimes the face to certain evils is what we assign it as rather than what it ACTUALLY is. People being "let down" that Mandarin wasn't the larger than life terrorist we thought he was, says more about who we are and our own mindset than the movie itself. I think IM3 did a great job of playing with audience expectations and satirizing modern portrayals of villainy in a post-9/11 world, where we expect everything to be so bombastic and out in the open. Real evil lurks in the shadows and survives by letting us give it the face we want it to have.

I was hyped for the fight between the Mandarin and Iron-men. Then they revealed him as a actor. After that i was just angry because i used to watch the Iron-man cartoon late at night on Jet X (comment if you know what channel that is) and the Mandarin was a force to be reckoned with, a true, hardcore villain. Then they gave me some dumb villain who has a grudge against tony cause he blew him off on the new years of 2000. Hollywood why do you hate my childhood. Hope Iron-man 4 is better.
@Evelina_412

There may not be Iron Man 4. Or worse, the could be Iron man 4, but with a different actor. RDJ's contract will be over after Civil War (correct me if I'm wrong) and it's not clear if Tony Stark will be recast. There's also a possibility that they will just let Iron Man go and move on with new characters. They're already introducing a lot of new characters. RDJ loves this character, so I REALLY hope he will stick around, because no one could play this character better. He is Tony Stark. He is Iron Man.

Nhat Lam NGUYEN The Mandarin have these rings that are not magic but posses some type of hi-tech alien technology. They are kind of like the infinity stones only on a lesser level when you tap in to there full potential. This is what makes mandarin such a great villain cause he posses real power. For more info you can do your own research. Also I was kidding about that whole iron-man 4 thing. I doubt they are really going to make one.

Before this movie, I didn't know what the Mandarin was. After this movie, it felt like a lackluster. Feels like a rehash of Edward Nigma from Batman Forever and Buddy from The Incredibles. The character development was alright but could had been better. They didn't show much friendship between Rhodey or Tony. It felt kinda flat and lacked the emotions and growth of the first one. Too many unanswered questions in this movie, like the super soldier formula and how did Killian get his funding. But the Iron Man suit up scenes and the ending was awesome. After I figured out who the Mandarin was in the comic books, I can understand why Mandarin fans were pissed off. Imagine Venom, Green Goblin or Doctor Doom was just an actor.

The Not-Mandarin was a big kick in the balls. I literally almost got up and walked out, but I had to see where they were going with it. But what was worse for me was that Tony Stark had the surgery! I mean, it's the device that makes him rely on being Ironman or he'll die. Back in the day, the suit kept up his health, therefore he needed to be Ironman. So now he has the surgery to prevent the shrapnel from killing him, and now what? He's still going to be Ironman for goodness sake? Sure!

For me, I never grew up with Iron Man in any form of medium. So when the first movie came out, I decided to go see it. As a result I loved it. But before every time I'm gonna see a Marvel Cinematic Universe film or any comic book film in that matter, i have to do research on who the characters, especially the villains, are so I can judge from a comic book fan's point of view. So when that plot twist came out, i was like, FUUUUUUUUUCCCK!" And no, I'm not exaggerating because everyone in the theatre had the same fucking reaction. And I do agree with Jeremy that this kind of plot twist can work, like in Batman Begins, but what they did with the Mandarin was inexcusable.
@Night-rage
@Night-rage 10 жыл бұрын
The whole Manderin charade thing was THE BEST THING IN THIS MOVIE. They are trying to send a message, in real life the bad guy is never the scary dude the media wants you to hate, there usually are some corrupt/creedy business men behind the figure head that are actually pulling the strings. When the movie started I sighed, and was annoyed I though "here we go again with the cliche middle eastern bearded terrorist, we get it blablabla", but when this twist came around I nearly applauded. I think it was really original, and if they did the standard mustage twirling villian it would have been just another super hero movie

Spencer Malley I think the biggest complaint is more that the Manderin isn't the magic wizard that he is in the comics. Even if they made Killian more interesting in any way, people just like to complain because "It's not like the comics". People fail to understand this take on him is way smarter and realistic then evil Merlin, who would totally not fit in with the style and world that we see in previous Iron Man movies. But to each his own.

+Michael van der Molen All of iron man's villains have been corrupt business men. The fact that they took a classic character and pretty much shitted on him is not cool. This movie was heavily criticised by fans BC they destroyed one of iron man's best villians. The story for iron man 3 was also super predictable. adding mandarin and magic would have made it better and less predictable. also you are clearly not and comic reader BC you would be infuriated with what they did with such a classic character as the manderin

My problem was that Guy Pierce sucked in this movie. Well, his character. He just couldn't be taken seriously. Yeah, the did a good job of making me hate him but it wasn't in the way that's good. He wasn't a good villain. He wasn't menacing. His reasoning/motive/whatever wasn't good enough. He wasn't badass. He just came off as a douche. Simple as that. He came off as a creep but in the way where it's like I just didn't want him in the movie. He wasn't an awesome villain. I really just wanted him to go away. He was annoying. So when it turned out HE was the big bad of the film and the one behind who I thought and WANTED to be the awesome villain... I was pretty pissed. And the revelation of it also was done in such a comedic fashion it pissed me off more. It made me feel like a total idiot. Like all the drama and grit of the situation/movie was just sucked away from me. The movie could not be taken seriously anymore. The movie became a joke. Not to mention Robert Downey Jr (or the writers) absolutely FAILED at portraying Tony Stark's PTSD. Barely any of the humor was actually funny. It was just pathetic. The movie was pathetic. The only thing I liked about was that little kid that Tony befriended. He was a cool kid and I like cool kids. The scenes between him and Tony were actually funny and heartwarming. Really the best part of the movie for me and... let's face it, that is not even close to enough to make this a good movie.
@HyraxusPrimus
@HyraxusPrimus 10 жыл бұрын
You've got a really solid argument. About the PTSD thing, I've been thinking, why would Tony be suffering from the space portal? I'm not saying it wasn't a traumatic experience, but I tend to think he would already be going through PTSD from what he went through in Afghanistan, what with the firefight, the shrapnel in his chest, the surgery without anesthetic, and of course months of captivity and torture ending in losing the best friend he had and falling out of the sky. Not to mention all the times he almost died in that same movie and the sequel. Oh, well. Hopefully one day, we might get the Mandarin we deserved, AND the one that we needed (I really can't stand those movies anymore, they were good for the first few watches, but they became so nonsensical to me). I also want my giant space dragon (Fin Fang Foom over lava people any day of the year).
@Legendaryknight2
@Legendaryknight2 10 жыл бұрын
Andy Howard I think that is what just killed the mood to me. When I saw the trailer, and heard "A hundred people want to kill me" and the apologies thing, I was like: Yeah, those demons are coming back, and the PTSD just brought everything he went through, not just new york. I thought the Aliens would be related to the 10 rings on the first movie + some notion that if starts taking down the avengers one by one the world would need to rely on him for protection. The I want this technology theme from the previous ones, and this would hit Stark really hard. But I kind of bought it because... In the previous two movies, Tony has a way that he keeps things to himself, in the first one he isolated himself because people just didn't believe he wasn't crazy, on the second one, he was slowly dying, he was having a hard time with it. In this movie, the kid fit just perfectly, Stark treats him like an adult and the kid rolls with it and is patient with what he is going through. I just can't buy Killian because he is just the Syndrome without being a super intelligent human that made him some gear, wait, Syndrome is Iron man.

I think the Mandarin plot twist could have been smart, if he wasn't just some actor. That was completely stupid. I related this situation more to the [TDKR SPOILER] Bane/Talia Al Ghul situation in TDKR than about Ra's. Because they switched the villain from the Mandarin to Aldrich Killian, as they switched from Bane to Talia. The big 'however' in this is that in TDKR Bane was a real villain ALL the time, he just had a boss, which was Talia. That's why it worked. Here, the Mandarin turns out NOT to be a real villain, he's just a stage actor. If in the movie he was in fact a villain, a terrorist called Mandarin, that was hired by Killian to get people's attention, they could've done this plot twist work as it worked for TDKR.

I personally loved the twist and I think this bit from the Blockbuster Buster's review of Iron Man 3 perfectly sums up my feelings on the backlash it got. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now let's talk about the complaint that I've heard the most: "They ruined the Mandarin" Okay, if you think this then you really weren't paying attention to the movie. At all. 'Cause the Mandarin wasn't in it. "But the trailers promised me the Mandarin and I wanted to see the Mandarin in it." Really? You wanted to see an accurate portrayal of the Mandarin in the Iron Man movies? Think about that for a second! After two movies which dealt with Tony Stark dealing with the sins of his past and pitting his technology against that of his enemies, you wanted to see him fight a space wizard? I'm sorry, guys. I love the comics but that just doesn't fit with the theme of the Iron Man movies. Look, as far as I'm concerned, this was one fantastic bit of misdirection. It's the kind of thing that the Marvel movie writers have to do to surprise us jaded comic book fans who know all the storylines. And, personally, I thought it was brilliant. The perfect way for Killian to cover up the Extremis explosions and keep all the attention away from his illegal activities. I think it's just sad that people ignore Ben Kingsley's amazing performance, as both the vicious terrorist and the has been actor, and focus on the so-called erroneous portrayal of a character who wasn't even there to begin with! As far as I'm concerned, this was a bold move and I applaud it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can watch the full review here: blip.tv/the-blockbuster-buster/honest-review-ironman-3-by-the-blockbuster-buster-7139955

As an Iron man Fan i raise the fucking question why all the comic movies from Marvel need to be full of humor and action comedy? why don't make a movie like Nolan did with Batman or Zack Snyder with Man Of Steel? Iron Man 3 tries so hard to please the audience with comedy and fucking up the Mandarin with some more comedy twist, the villain ends up feeling genetic and out of a steven Seagal movies, over the top action making it feel useless because of the bad plot, the only Iron Man movie that it is worth watching many times is the first one, the 2nd was good but not great and the 3rd one was awful, trash.

I'm not even really an Iron Man fan and I've never heard of the Mandarin before this movie and I was still really disappointed that the Mandarin wasn't real cause he was such a thought out and menacing villain. When he shot that dude with the president calling that was 100% menace and then they tell me it was some Mike Myers like actor. The guy from Memento didn't feel like a good replacement. He wasn't very menacing or at least not nearly as menacing as the Mandarin looked. It felt like a pointless and weak and disappointing direction for the movie to take.

Personally, I would of liked it better if the Mandarin was an Asian mastermind with lots of advanced technology, money and connections, probably played by Ken Watanabe. THAT would have been a great Mandarin. I think the reason they went for the route they did in Iron Man 3 is because the producers were probably convinced that the Mandarin comic book character was just another phoned-in villain who's main theme was "He's Chinese," so they wouldn't have been interested in taking him seriously and rebooting him into a badass.

the movie wasnt horrible, but just barely good. iron man 3 was supposed to be a large scale feeling movie....but i just didnt feel the scale it was hoping to be. especially when iron man doesnt really do iron man shit, instead controls his suits like a remote control robot and seeing 80 percent of the movie having tony stark trying to be a deep and complex character when he just isnt. i did like the action at the end though with his "house party protocol". but then you realise, tony stark isnt the hero, fuckin gwyneth paltrow is.....

Still holding it to my heart what Ben Kingsley said, which was obviously said on what he wanted it to be, not what was truly going to be. Trevor Slattery is the true mastermind, letting Aldrich Killian use him as a scapegoat and let people believe the Mandarin is gone after the event, but then have Trevor actually be the Mandarin.

i don't think the mandarin can really be compared to the joker. the joker is the BEST comic book villain of all time in my opinion. i never really cared about the mandarin like that so i don't really care how they represent him in the movie. i thought it was really smart, fresh, & funny.

He compares the Mandarin to the Joker in the sense that he is Iron Man's MAIN villain. Joker to Batman is Mandarin to Iron Man. They are very different characters, but they are the main arch nemeses of those heroes. To take the most important villain of that hero and completely shit on them like that...it is just downright stupid.

Japheth19 to be honest tho, it's not just the mandarin I had problem with in this movie, it's the final scene, I mean "I am iron man" well if they have said it differently then I'd be okay but since the dark knight trilogy everything about iron man 3 seems like a copycat of the dark knight, from the injury to broken mask poster and to the I am superhero no more i'm just a normal man now

Holly Roxy As much of a Batman fan as I am, is it wrong for me to be intrigued if that plot twist was in fact used, and The Joker is just some nerd in his parent's basement? I'd like it because while it isn't The Joker I know, at least it is a refreshing, and if plotted properly, workable take on the character. I get that fans are attached to one version of a character and that the original comics are like gospel to some, but come on, it's just a version, not THE Mandarin. At least take that for what it is, and consider the film for it's merits rather than be blinded by pointless hate because this was, in my opinion, a pretty good comic book movie.

No, Joker is to Batman what Manderin is to Iron Man. He's not "Villain of the week" He's not "Just a member of the rouges" He's the *Arch. I'm wondering if it is possible that the Mandarin does exist in the Marvel Cinamatic Universe. I was thinking that possibly in the Marvel Universe that the Mandarin was a folk tale or myth in the Marvel universe that Alderich Killian was inspired by to create the Mandarin persona that we see in the movie. However, Killian doesn't realize that the folk tale about the Mandarin is actually true and there is a Mandarin out there in the Marvel Universe. If this somehow happens, Mandarin comic book fans will be satisfied by the existence of their beloved Mandarin character without needing to negate Iron Man 3. The Mandarin doesn't have to be all powerful as his comic book counterpart but he could be toned down enough that Tony Stark could actually fight and defeat. If he is exactly like his comic book counterpart, I think the Mandarin could be a villain for the Avengers to fight in the future.

Man this movie has to be one of the worst films I've seen in my 16 year old life. So much shit wrong I don't even know where to start! 1st, the bad guys in this thing just didn't make any sense. While I can see why Killian would be mad at Tony Stark, was he really that mad to make up a fake terrorist threat, kidnap the president, and try to take over the United States? And where did Killian get all his fire breathing henchmen? I kno the movie shows that Extremis was used to heal wounded soldiers, bt why would they turn on the country that they went to war for? Why kidnap and try to kill its president? And the same for the Vice President. Would he really sell out his whole country to Killian just so his daughter would be cured of her disability. I know its gotta be hard to see a loved one with a disability bt come on!! And even tho I've never read an Iron Man comic, even I was disappointed by the Mandarin twist. When you advertise a guy with magical powers, I want to see some magical powers. 2nd, they should've changed the name of this movie to "Tony Stark" instead of Iron Man. Was there even one scene where he spent more than a couple seconds in one suit?? The final battle where Tony's jumping from suit to suit because they're all being destroyed realy made Iron Man look weak. And doesn't being able to sit back and control the Iron Man suit from home defeat the purpose of being a superhero! That's like having Thor sit at home and his magic hammer going out to fight super villains. 3rd, Tony Stark was just off as a character. Why was he so messed up by what when down in Avengers? Its not like that should have been a super traumatizing experience for everything a guy like Tony Stark has been through. I mean, he woke up one day with a hole in his chest!!! Now THAT would be a good reason for someone to have crazy flashbacks and anxiety. And why the hell would Tony Stark give a terrorist his home address and have absolutely no plan to defend himself!! The one suit he had available in case of attack was the one that wasn't battle ready yet! For a genius business man and weapons maker, that was a pretty dumb move. It woulda been kinda bad ass if Tony was stocked up on weapons and waiting for Mandarin to come at his house, bt he had no type of plan at all! There were some other little things that bothered me about this movie. Like all the scenes with the kid that was being bullied (totally pointless). And how ppl on Extremis could rip apart Air Force One and destroy Iron Man suits, bt couldn't even catch Tony Stark when they saw him in that bar. I just don't see how anybody could have liked this movie. Some were even calling it the best Iron Man movie out of all of the three. Now Iron Man 2 was just mediocre to me, bt it was wayyy more put together than this Iron Man 3 piece of garbage Oh and how could I forget the end credit scene. That was a big middle finger to anyone who stayed after the credits hoping for some hints at the next Marvel movie

90% of viewers will like it because they are not invested in the franchise. Taking a character like Mandarin and twisting him like they did only serves to piss off the original fan. Why do it? they could have invented a new character or shat on a lessor character. I was 8 years old when I picked up my first Iron Man comic book and recall the awe that struck me when I saw the Mandarin. Consider this... if it weren't for original long time hard core fans like myself, there would be no marvel movie franchise or the big pay days that the fat cats are presently enjoying. If they would've kept the original Mandarin, it would be the third Iron Man movie with a villain from the East who has some personal problems with Tony and later just decides that he hates everyone in America, so Iron Man has to save the day. It would be predictable, repetitive and boring. These movies are made for everyone, not just people who read the comics, you have to realize that. Comic book fans would appreciate the well represented character, people who weren't that much into the comic books about say ,,What? Again?''

If you paid attention, after Jarvis was repaired, they mentioned the cranes at the house, which was referring to the construction crew removing rubble from Tony's house. They had to wait for the con crew to remove the rubble from on top of the door which held all of the suits. So it was a matter of waiting until it was available, not neglect.

@Flaris 11 жыл бұрын
Really the only way they can repair this is to have a real Mandarin show up in the next Iron Man movie and kill the actor who pretended to be him here. Or at the very least have the next villain not be yet another damn evil scientist/businessman. When it happened it as just "really?....you're really doing this?" It just completely killed the movie and even an epic army of Iron Man suits couldn't save it after that. That could have worked in a Bond movie, maybe could have worked if they just used a random name for this guy. But pretty much removing the possibility of a major villain just for a twist...that's just weak.

I didn't mind The Mandarin twist--although I could have done without the toilet "humor"--but there was so much more wrong with this movie. The suits that exploded if you breathed on them, the actual villain basically being discount-Syndrome, Pepper doesn't die because of the magical plant and can suddenly control the pieces of the Iron Man suits, and it turns out Tony could have surgery to remove the shrapnel after all and can still be Iron Man but doesn't want to because of Pepper. I don't have too much of an issue with the inclusion of Tony's PTSD, although they could have probably used that in the second film instead and to greater effect as it was closer to him escaping an actual war zone and having killed people FOR THE FIRST TIME. I get it that he probably ignored dealing with any of that because "I'm Iron Man" or even "I'm Tony Stark," but it's clearly being used to humanize the character in this film and at this point it feels like the emotionally manipulative move it is instead of being believable. Wow, that got longer than I intended.

Still a little weirded out by Killian getting ass-whooped by Genyth Paltrow in yoga pants. I wouldn't mind if it was someone else like Natalie Portman or Scarlett Johansen, or Mila Kunis.

Everyone watch the Marvel One Shot 'All Hail the King'. It covers the Mardarin issue. Consider it a double twist.

Thing about these movies is they can always bring out the "Real" Mandarin at a later date, and reveal everything up to now has just been part of his big game.

Aaron Mason The point is that it wasn't planned. Hell, we don't know even they even will go anywhere with it. It's just a bit sad that they took a risk and now they aren't sticking to their guns just because some people weren't happy with it.

+Kevin Carney The only thing they did is create an interesting plot point, and to soften out the hardcore marvel comic lore fans, they added the One-Shot. Yes it had that purpose, but it's still canon. The real Mandarin is still out there. We saw the Ten rings in the first Iron Man movie, and in the tv series Agent Carter we see the usage of one of the rings. I'm ok with that.

We all know that they try to come clear in "All Hail the King". I actually can see the portrayal in IM3 as a great plot point for a coming Iron Man movie. 'Nobody takes the rumors of a rising of new enemy power that goes by the name "The Mandarin" seriously, because everyone know the last guy was a fake and the new guy is probably just a copy cat.'

Exactly! Thank you. I'm surprised no has paid attention to that. Just because he doesn't have the thing in his chest anymore doesn't mean he isn't Iron Man. He built over 40 suits, he can easily build another one.

P.S. Marvel released a mini clip showing that the Mandarin actually becomes the Mandarin from jail. Well, it's hinted at in the clip.

i think it would be cool if they throw the mandarin thing deeper down the rabbit hole and you find out that killian was being played by a real mandarin who (as a way to connect it with captain America, aside from... avengers) is part of a cell of hydra or something like that. who provided killian with the resources and made him see himself as the one pulling the strings. I thought there was a line that implied that it was possible, but I guess not. as for the santa claus thing, sana= saint, claus = Nicholas. saint Nicholas was a real man who "santa claus" was based on. he died on December 6th 343 AD. most of the Christmas traditions are said to come from him. so santa claus WAS a real man. but he wasn't the one we know today. he was a priest born from a rich family and lived in turkey, who gave his wealth to those he felt really needed it. the "santa claus we've come to know had been started in a peom, and evolved from there. sorry, (i'm like everyone else who hears information they think is wrong and feel the need to "educate" / "correct" others on) I mean no disrespect (in fact I love your videos). and I don't intend to turn this into a religious flame war just because I used the word "priest" and/or "saint" (I've seen people start such things over smaller implications) I am merely stating that yes, there was a "santa claus" but no, he did not travel in a magic sled pulled by flying reindeer, nor did he live in the north pole and have worker elves in a toy shop. he was just a man/saint/priest who gave to the needy and died at the age of 73.

Interresting answer to your question coming up: As a pretty hardcore fan of the marvel comics, AND the marvel movies, I've gotta say I liked the way they made the mandaring in the movie. I enjoy the marvel universe in the comics, and I still like how they change it to fit the movies. If you think about it, to introduce the whole "Madarin martial master kapow-man" concept in the third movie without any hints throughout the trilogy, the fans who haven't read the comics would just get confused, and there's a bigger percentage of viewers whoe don't know much about the comic universe lore, and they simply enjoy the movies. My SO is like that, as she's neber read the comics, but she loves the movies. So... TL;DR the comics are great. The movies are great. They are still two different medium and should be treated as such. (I just now realised I wasn't commenting on reddit... F**k it, I'll post anygays...)

My main problem was that it was two stories basically mashed into one, and the trailers were completely, deliberately misleading. I still watch that original Iron Man 3 teaser, and think "damn, wish we coulda gotten THAT movie." Do the Mandarin, or do Extremis, don't do both at the same time.
