Anybody else remember the *first* remake of The Wolfman with Benicio del Toro? I think it's underrated and it kind of went for a similar angle, showing Larry Talbot's descent into madness as the lycanthropy took its toll on him both physically and psychologically.
@brentoutashape914122 сағат бұрын
I actually enjoyed that quite a bit, but i could have done without his dad being a werewolf, too. Also, I expected more from Hugo Weaving.
@sthr211012 сағат бұрын
It was considerably better than this one. This one...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
@shadowking973911 сағат бұрын
@@brentoutashape9141 I totally agree. Sir John's motivations made little sense and his role as the antagonist was pretty obvious from the start. Hugo Weaving was definitely underutilized, which is a shame, not only because he's a great actor but because he plays Francis Aberline, who is based on the real-life *Frederick Abberline*. A police inspector who failed to catch Jack the Ripper is brought in to catch a killer that turns out to be a werewolf is a great idea but the movie does little with it. I would've eliminated the part about Sir John being a werewolf and kept the conflict between Larry and Inspector Aberline, making it a cat-and-mouse game between the two as Larry struggles to come to terms with his condition and Aberline suspecting him, almost toying with Larry as he gathers evidence but also unaware of the primary suspect being a werewolf for most of the film.

"You accept that which should be ridiculous in your dreams as perfectly fine. You accept madness as, 'yeah it's just supposed to be like that', and you wake up and you're like, 'Why did I accept that as reality?'". Fantastic question John! Piqued my interest and looked it up. Most of us are taught that the brain is more active during sleep than it is awake, but that is only true for certain parts of the brain. Those parts that are excluded from this during REM sleep are both your prefrontal cortex, part of the brain that is responsible for logic and critical thinking, and your precuneus, the part of your brain responsible for episodic memory retrieval and self-reflection. This means that the parts of the brain that would question the reality of what's occurring during a dream are not active enough during sleep to question why you were in bed and now in another place and/or time. I have personally never experienced it before, but when a person is lucid dreaming, these parts of the brain that have previously been mentioned for some reason have become more active contradictory to normal REM sleep. Not enough research has been conducted to explain why this occurs, but EEG brain scans show that this is what is occurring.

I'm waiting to see if someone does a good modern adaptation of Jykell & Hyde. Just the story about one's inner demons coming out has always intrigued me.
@dlumyoung093 күн бұрын
Leigh Whannell actually said that he wants to do an adaptation (I think modern day) of Jekyll & Hyde. So...fingers crossed.
@peytonalexander53003 күн бұрын
I expect that a lot of the people who are into this premise already know this, but the thing that makes Jekyll and Hyde so interesting is that they are not two separate personalities. They’re just the same guy who is shape shifting into a different guy so that he can live out all of his most depraved fantasies without having so deal with any of the societal repercussions. However, the more he lets himself run wild and explore his hedonism as Mr. Hyde, the more Jekyll realizes he has to push the boundaries of morality to feel the same excitement he used to, eventually leading him to commit the ultimate sin. Also, something people don’t know is that the fact that Jekyll IS Mr. Hyde is the twist at the end of the novel. These days, it’s become such a part of our collective consciousness that everyone knows this about the story, but the whole point of the original book is that you actually don’t find out they’re the same guy until the very end when the protagonist finds Dr. Jekyll’s notes.
@Tyler_W3 күн бұрын
That would be interesting, but idk how you'd actually do that. It's such a product of the era in which it was written that idk how you can translate that into current years without it coming across as another generic possession movie, which it really isn't supposed to be.

If I had the opportunity to remake a werewolf film, I would carefully revisit the cult classic, An American Werewolf in London. However, I would put a fresh spin on the original story. The remake would take place in the present day, but with a twist: the events of the original film would be treated as a historical incident, locked away and forgotten. The legend of the werewolf would be nothing more than a myth, a relic of a bygone era. The story would begin with our protagonist, a curious and adventurous individual, trekking through the picturesque Yorkshire Dales. This is the same location where the first attack took place in the original film. Drawn in by the local legends and folklore, our protagonist has come to the UK to explore the various locations associated with the werewolf myth. As our protagonist delves deeper into the mystery, they begin to notice that the locals are reluctant to discuss the werewolf legend. The village has been mocked and ridiculed for so long that they've become tight-lipped about the whole affair. However, our protagonist's curiosity is piqued, and they start to uncover the dark secrets that the village has kept hidden for so long. The tension builds as night begins to fall, and our protagonist finds themselves face-to-face with a terrifying creature: a massive, snarling beast that seems to embody the very essence of the werewolf legend. The attack is intense and brutal, leaving our protagonist shaken and forever changed. From this point on, the story would unfold in a way that pays homage to the original while introducing new themes and ideas. Our protagonist would be forced to confront the reality of the werewolf's existence, and the true horror that comes with it. The film would be a tense, atmospheric thriller that explores the complexities of human nature and the supernatural.

So in a way it’s more like a soft remake of WOLF with Jack Nicholson who gets bit by a wolf and over the course of the movie Jack slowly but also permanently changes into a wolf towards the end. Only difference is that at least in the full moon nights, the lycanthropy takes over him however keeps his personality, kind of like Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde.

That basically being insane while dreaming is a rather interesting take I have not heard before... I gotta think about that a bit more, thanks!

2010 Wolfman was just not a good movie. It’s just a poorly done film on every front except special effects. They got that right

Benicio del toro was a weird choice i couldn't get past, despite being the great actor that he is

Jeremy Jan's 'Wolfman' review thumbnail is so spot-on, you'd think he's not just reviewing the movie but howling at his own reflection!

It usually seems to get forgotten in modern film interpretations that Frankenstein's monster was described as "beautiful". And that has been flirted with, here and there- as in the Sting/Clancy Brown "The Bride"- but it feels like a while since we've gotten an interpretation of Frankenstein that didn't feel a need to pile three more layers of occult/monster business on top of it, and I think we might be ready for a new one.

There's another new one that came out in December (I think) just called "Werewolves", which from the looks of it: Is essentially 28 Days Later but with Lycanthropy and I'd love to hear your thoughts on that too! Should be noted that that could very well have the opposite problem this one had of "too much/too many", however

Hated this movie. It was boring and sucked. Unnecessary and I wish I had walked out - that's the highest "praise" I can give it.

This reminds me of Jon Watt's movie Clown (2014) where a father dresses up as a clown, the suit slowly merges into his skin as he's becoming some sort of clown zombie during the entire film.
