A semi-meta film about an actor remaking a movie that is totally not 'The Exorcist', then creepy things start happening. Psychological thriller meets possession horror. Here's my review for THE EXORCISM!

I want John Wick mixed with exorcism!! Featuring Russell Crowe. The deviil kills Russell's puppy, and he goes on a murderous rampage to kill all the demons. And due to his "ways" to "exorcise the demons" he gets ex-comunicado from the church. And now the demons and his fellow priests want him dead!

I saw it too and I agree with Jeremy. Like it looked like the classic case of a studio not having faith in a character piece and just marketing it as a horror film...and then it confirmed it for me at the end when I was like "yeah there was 110% studio medling here!" Either that or the writer doesn't know how to write endings, which is fair but kind of ass.

I think part of the reason why the Exorcist franchise is failing (despite the lackluster films obviously) is that other films that aren't technically part of the franchise but use the word Exorcist water it down for average audiences who don't know any better.

I agree but I think the problem with a lot of Hollywood movies nowadays there are two glossy looking they've lost that rugged edge from back in the day and the actors look like cardboard actors they don't look like everyday people like they used to do back in the day Hollywood really needs the revamp and rethink how they do s***.

My theory is that the filmmakers don't understand, or ignore the structure of the abrahamic faith that propells the original exorcist movie. They think that if they just put a demon child in the movie, everyone will be scared. They don't understand that the most compelling thing about the original was not the possessed child, but the priest grappling with his faith. While it may look so, the demon in the first Exorcist is not after the child. What it really wants is the priest. If it can make a priest lose his faith in god and get his soul in a boot, it will be a tremendous victory. It therefore uses his doubts and other misgivings against him, in order to try to achieve victory.

@@ningenslayer6306 Thank you. That is also why Exorcist III is such a well made movie. While its about a possession, its also about a police detective that is grappling with his losing faith in humanity, trying to see the best in people, and exclaiming in the penultimate scene that all he believes in is "filth" Highly reccomend it, if you havent seen it already. Its now finally getting a well deserved recognition in modern day, it didnt get when it came out. But who cares about all these deep subjects? Lets put a demon in it along with a lot of jump scares, and that should be enough? - Hollywood probably.

Great review, Jeremy. I think you saved me a trip to the theater. As far as a movie that I really loved until the last act, the most recent example and the one that comes to mind the most for me, is THE BATMAN. I really loved the detective noir vibe that was so much what the first almost two hours was about. But the third act, where it just became about a big superhero finale and fight, for me, jump-sharked the picture. I did like Batman becoming more of a hero or inspiration, but didn’t feel it was worth losing that awesome detective noir feeling of the first two thirds of the movie. And then that last hour became more of a chore for me.

And although the movie wasn’t spectacular starting off, it was mildly intriguing mainly because of one actress (Aubrey Plaza) and the direction I thought the movie was heading with her character and the main character. Then all of the sudden her character disappears with no rhyme or reason and the movie completely tanked. It sucked because up to that point, the movie was actually getting good…and then it just totally just crapped the bed. The thing I hate about most Possession movies is most of them are the same and follow the same template. Possession movie cliche’s. * Catholicism * Nuns * Priests * A Confessional scene * Holy Water * A Ouija Board * Vomiting * A Priest that struggles with his faith * Ripping off stuff from The Exorcist or The Omen. * The person who’s possessed acts like an Animal. Imo Amityville Horror 2: The Possession is not only one of the very best Possession movies but it’s one of the most accurate to what would actually happen if someone was possessed. If someone was possessed they wouldn’t be acting like an animal, they would be doing stuff to seduce people to sin. And why do 99.9% of these possession movies involve Catholicism?. I’ve only ever seen 1 Possession movie that didn’t Involve Catholicism and that was The Possession from 2012 which involved Judaism. I’ve never seen a Possession movie that involves Evangelical Protestants, I’ve seen Disaster movies with hints of Evangelical Protestant themes though, mostly with Nic Cage in Knowing and Left Behind.

I recall when The Exorcist 3 (1990) was filmed, writer/director William Peter Blatty wanted to make it a character film about how the events of the first film tie into some demonic murders are happening around Georgetown. Then the Morgan Creek people wanted an exorcism tacked onto the end, because of the title. Still a great film in the series, or the first 2/3 of it was.

BvS was great in the beginning, showing Bruce Wayne on the ground during the Man of Steel fight. Sheltering a little girl whose mom is trapped in a building that is falling. The alternate perspective and way it was shot with them constantly flying out of frame because they are moving so fast... and the glare from Bruce as he watches his entire worldview crumble around him. Great setup for a Batman v Superman conflict... and then it changes to ridiculous plot contrivances, shoehorned cameos, and overacted Lex Luther machinations that make no sense, no real reason ideologically for Superman to fight at all, and then the biggest meme of the DCEU! 😢

How you described bad endings in movies making you feel like your time was wasted is how I feel about a lot of anime. Either cuz it was rushed or left it unfinished but they never got the budget for another season....it sux so bad when that happens.

Most Hollywood movies seem to start out well and then have a disappointing ending these days. It's like everybody making them (but not necessarily the actors) just gives up halfway through and wants to get them finished quick.

Most movies that manage to hit the theatre these days feel like this. They start off with cool ideas and then the executives make ending demands that trash the whole experience.

This movie review deeply upsets me as a person who genuinely enjoyed the film and believe it to be one of the best horror movies I have seen in a long time. It bugs me that people who haven't seen it won't watch it because you thought you were funny enough to take unnecessary jabs at certain aspects of the movie. Supernatural movies are harder to pack a scare because most people don't believe in the religion/superstition, which is why I believe the phycological aspect is so necessary and gives intense, suspenseful moments that the audience can relate to. Most people will think it's another run-of-the-mill exorcist film, but the modern-day visual effects are something that honestly sheds a whole new light to "Boring" or otherwise ultimately worn-out horror concept. I would have paid extra for. Sure, there were a few times when it was a little too meta but it worked perfectly fine for me, who went into the movie without any context or expectations whatsoever. The movie didn't even end on a weird note, it ended exactly when it should have ended(After the exorcism) including a little room for interpretation and speculation on the main characters. Acting, Visual effects, jump-scares that work, genuinely terrifying and suspenseful moments, dramatic irony, two chicks making out, please go watch this film. Jeremy Jahns, I regret watching this video more than I did watching two girls one cup as a kid. Look what you made me do, go all karen nshit fuck.

I just saw this movie yesterday and while it was no blockbuster I still felt it was a decent movie. I realize most people will not agree and that is their choice and we can agree to disagree. The movie was a little slow in getting the story going but it did eventually pick up and for me became very suspenseful.

I would have believed this was another version of Pope's Exorcist the same way Dominion and Exorcist The beginning was with Stellan Skarsgard.

I’m not sure what they reshot, but a majority of the movie was actually filmed in 2019, and they did reshoots in 2023 (the final scene is clearly part of them)

Is it me or recently more and more Hollywood movies start very well for the first half and then suddenly drop in quality for the second half? It seems they have pacing issues.

White Noise and Insidious part 1 were MAJOR letdowns in their endings. Insidious 2 I felt redeemed the ending of part 1, but White Noise was just a crime against humanity on how it ended. But NOTHING pissed me off more than Glass.

Silent Hill Revelation. Followed the game, almost to a tee, for about 20 mins. I was like "is this gonna be good?" Then at minute 21 I was like "Well, shit". Then to have a full on statue of Valtiel and replace him with Pyramid Head was just insulting. I realize I'm on a SH:R rant now so I'mma stop right here.

My friend and I saw it tonight. It started off interesting, and then we both had trouble staying awake. It does pick up toward the end, but it’s such a mess and doesn’t really make any sense that it didn’t really redeem it at all. Sucks ‘cause we were looking forward to it. There are some solid moments with Russell Crowe’s character, his daughter, and the director of the movie, though.

You gave this movie way too much credit. Yes, the first 30 mins is intriguing, minus the opening obligatory "fright scene" that wasn't frightening at all. Crowe plays a washed up actor being given a second chance and also dealing with a late teens college student daughter who got sent back home due to bad grades. He is given the role of an exorcist and then he starts acting all weirded up both while working and at home, much to his daughters chagrin. Never once does the film discuss what starts the devil made me do it moments. Once the standard BOO GOT YA scares start happening (and they are telegraphed in advance every single time) it goes down hill really quickly and then the last 30 minus not only goes off the rails, but lands in a ditch and then they spin around in mud circles. Several moments of "WTF just happened?", and it got to the point we just started laughing out loud. The finale was just draw droppingly ridiculous, and we actually laughed about the movie on the way home. Usually a bad movie is quickly forgotten by the time you get back in the car, if at that. This one however had us chuckling well afterwards. Thankfully it's just over 90 mins long. Just FYI, for me David Hyde Pierce was the best thing about this movie. He plays an actual priest to hang around on the set to make sure demonic shit dont hit the fan. His character is actually well thought out and played...just don't ask me what they did what they did with his character at the end. He must've pissed somebody off.

I was so confused when this movie came out because I kept thinking, wait, did they re-release The Pope's Exorcist with a different title? Because there's no way Russell Crowe did two back-to-back priest/exorcism themed movies, right? But nope, turns out it is two different movies and Russell Crowe did in fact do two back to back priest/exorcism themed movies 😂
