Jeremy, now that I thought about it, I had the opposite thing happen to me. I own a Silvertone 1344 tube amp from the early 50's. A guy I knew from owning a guitar shop asked to see it. I took it in and he offered to clean up and check the tubes. I got it back and the chicken head knobs was replaced with tophats. I retrieved those but later discovered the tubes had all been changed out with junk. Thankfully the shop is gone. I wonder if he still plays bass at his church. .

In my early 20's (I'm now in my early 60's) I shared a house with a mate in an inner city area, in my home town of Melbourne. One day I came home from work to find the front door kicked in and the house ransacked. From my room they took my stereo, a very primitive drum machine I had recently acquired and my mate's very expensive hifi setup from the lounge room, plus a bunch of other stuff I can't recall. The police turned up and treated the situation as an inconvenience for them (we have bigger fish to fry!) and left. A little while later I was telling another friend about what had happened and he told me that another guy, who we both casually knew, had offered to sell him a very primitive drum machine! This person was a known "user" so we had always kept our distance from him. I can't remember the actual outcome for him, but I was able to replace my stuff through my contents insurance. The point of all this is that this person missed my 1960 Gibson Les Paul burst and 1974 Fender Stratocaster which were tucked out of sight under my double bed. Lucky lucky lucky!

I once bought a Taylor 814 Brazilian from our only music store from the store manager, at a ridicously low price. He told me there was some small flaws, hence the low price. I had it for a couple of years and wanted to buy a mandolin, so I sold it to another store and bought my mandolin. I was talking to our stores owner and told him I sold the 510 and he said what 510. I told him the story and he informed me that the old manager had sold it and kept the money. He was very nice to me and said it was all OK. I have since bought other instruments from them and I always only dealt with the owner. I never thought I would be caught up in anything shady and now I know better. George in Montana

Guitar and Amp Center was a true gem. Always had cool stuff, and the staff were just awesome people. I was 19 in college at JMU and had a pretty vanilla Mexican Telecaster that I brought in. I told the guy at the counter I only had ~$50-60 to spend, but wanted to upgrade the guitar somehow to make it enjoyable to play. He slapped a USA ashtray bridge with brass saddles on it and that guitar came alive. I was glad to have a shop I could trust - good times.

My story...sold a guitar, nicer Eastman, to a guy 3 or 4 hours away. Won’t mention the shipping company, but it’s a major one. The buyer calls me a few days later. A friend of his was driving a county road and found the boxed up guitar in the highway. He stops, picks it up and realizes he knows the guy and delivers it to him unharmed. I packed it well. A couple weeks later I get a message from the shipper saying, “your package was delivered “. All ended well. I assumed the deliver guy rearranged his load and forgot to close his back doors.

I can’t imagine having one of my guitars stolen. I have pictures and the serial numbers recorded and insured but still, an awful feeling. When I was a college kid I worked in a small town audio store, sold home & car audio components, records, tapes, etc. those items were easier to steal, and often times we caught folks. It doesn’t feel so personal with store stereo items. But you still feel bad. But with a guitar like that or any guitar I’m sure you feel violated. Had a 57 Chevy I owned stolen, and over the course of time had my personal and work trucks broken into. Always a bad , angry feeling that never fully goes away. In 1987, my wife and I had bought our first house and some people were building a new house across the street from us and it was the building contractors last day on the job. My wife came home to find a broken window in our back bedroom and many items missing including my 1982-1984 (can't remember the exact year) Jackson Randy Rhoads guitar missing. It was a student model which just means it had dot markers instead of sharktooth or whatever they are called. It was white with black pinstripes and looked a lot like the Sandoval guitar that Randy played. It also had a Kahler. Anyway, since we had just bought the house, I did have homeowners insurance for the first time in our lives and that did cover me but I loved that guitar dearly and wish I still had it to this day even though I might look funny playing it as I'm an old guy now. They didn't take the case either and it was obviously never recovered. I do however remember the serial number which is stamped on the end of the fretboard. It's "RR1044" so if anyone ever runs across it, let me know! My first sentence tells you who I think stole it and yes, I know, I'll never see it again.

A few years ago about 3 weeks before Christmas I had a laptop stolen off my desk at the church where I pastor while I was working in the sanctuary on the sound system. Fast forward a few weeks i went to a pawnshop close by to see if it was there and I spied a ghost… actually it was a Taylor 410 acoustic that was once owned by a friend of mine. I recognized it because it had a pinless bridge and a nice LR bags pickup. I snapped a picture of it and the serial number and messaged him. He was stunned as it had been gone for some time. He had never filed a report so it didn’t show up stolen as he figured it was a waste of time. He went in with the police and they sold it to him for what they gave the guy who brought it in….$50. Apparently the seller was a known drug user police said. Guitar was worth $800-900 which says all you need to know about that particular pawn shop.

I was in a band after high school and my dad let me use his 72 Gibson SG. I had never seen him play it since he’s mainly an acoustic player. It just sat in our basement in the case. I brought it to practice at my buddy’s house, and like an idiot I kept it there. I had been friends with these guys for years and had complete trust in them. Eventually we broke up and I was moving gear back to my house. I noticed that the Gibson was not there. I asked my buddy about it and he said he brought it back to his house. Why he would think he could do that I don’t know. Now my dad started asking for the guitar back. So I asked my buddy if he could drop it off. He said sure but time after time he kept flaking out. Always made excuses up about forgetting or something popping up. This went on for a year. I would show up at his house when he said he would be there but would never answer the door. Meanwhile I keep telling my dad that I’ll get it for him and that I’m just having a hard time meeting with my buddy. Finally he comes cleans to me and said he doesn’t have it anymore. He made up some bogus story about how his girlfriend moved out and that she took it. I had no idea about this because he hid it very well, but apparently he was having drug problems and most likely pawned the guitar. I guess he’s done this with some of his other friend’s gear. My friend once found an amp he loaned him in a pawn shop. I’ve never been paid back or anything from this guy. He’s basically just vanished. Needless to say my dad was livid.

There's more than one way to get ripped off. I worked for a 2nd-hand store and while we didn't have people try to steal guitars we had people constantly trying to sell us stolen guitars or upsell POS axes. Before I started working there (before the internet) they had people coming in trying to sell POS Squiers (80s and 90's Bullets, ugh!) as Fenders. I had to explain to my bosses that it was "Squier by Fender" and not a Fender Squier like it was a Fender Tele or Strat. One guy (Ron) I knew as a scammer from other places. He was making small fortune buying Squier Bullets that people had bought and basically wanted to discard and selling them to my bosses as full Fenders. He and quite a few others was really not happy with me when I started educating my bosses. When I first started they didn't know I knew anything about guitars, and at first they were a bit put off as they thought I was kind of trying to tell them how to go about their business, but eventually, I was able to get them to understand that I was trying to help them save their money. The funniest one was this hideous red 355-looking knockoff with a knockoff, no label, no nothing Fender-style neck that was hanging with no price on it. When I was brand new to working there I had asked my main boss about what price he wanted on it but he said that it was a "rare guitar" so he wasn't sure, but that it was worth a lot of money because it was a Fender neck on a Gibson body. Yeeeeahhhhhh.... I started to explain but was shut down right quick by my boss, and icily told, and in no uncertain terms, that it wasn't my business literally or figuratively and that he had spent what he considered a lot of money buying it. After I had proven my worth to them as the "guitar guy" I had the chance to bring it up again one day. My boss (who had made the buy) was having a little problem understanding the whole thing so I said, "If I took the front end of your Cadillac off could I put a Lincoln front end on it? Just bolt it up and 'tada!"? (Boss : "No") "Even if you could, would your car be worth more because it's a Caddy with a Lincoln front clip?" (Boss: "No') Then I had to explain that neither body nor neck was the genuine thing and why any neck could never be bolted onto a Gibson body. The boss looks at me, kinda mad but not aimed at me, and says, "So, what you're telling me is that I got ripped-off?" I just nodded. Then I asked, "Ron?" Boss replied,"Ron..." Ron was pretty much persona non grata after that. He'd show up when I wasn't there and the bosses always told him to come back when I was there. heh heh heh

We called the police and got back all the guitars and never got the mandolin back. The mandolin was by far the most expensive and he said he sold it to a guy for $50. I personally don’t believe he sold it, I believe to this day he still has it. All of the guitars were scraped just like to Les Paul you are talking about. Every serial number was gone and gouged. @@JeremySheppard I googled the area, as best as I could see it. I checked the link on the reply and it had a phone number and said that it was started about 3 days ago. I thought you would like to know

I had a a hole, invite me over every week to jam. Even played a few gigs. He said he loved to clean/repair gear. Over the years he “cleaned” my gear alright. ‘65 twin reverb was parted and cheap parts put in. Old commander 2 somewhat parted. Dude destroyed historic gear for a few bucks. Ego narcissistic to boot. Also worst player I’ve ever played with.

I had stuff in storage and someone stole 10 guitar and 25 to30 pedals and a amp. The cops acted as if I had done something wrong. Didn't even want to do the report. Long story consonant source of anger and frustration. People that steal are the lowest of the low and the cops act like your wasting their time. If your not rich or have connections the cops don't want you to waist their doughnut time.💩&🐷

What about Meatballs buddy CornPop ?

It sucks how low people can go and self serving they can be. I have always believed in Karma. My hope is that Meatball is now in the big house and his cellmate " Bubba " is kind enough to push in his stool at night......Night Night Meatball......Hey Meatball why does your pillow have all these teeth marks on it?

Well the question of the moniker "Meatball" has been sufficiently answered. Guy probably couldnt play a cowboy A.
@rosewoodsteel66562 жыл бұрын
So I guess we know why the guy had that nick name.

So this guy leaves you working all alone in a clearly sizeable shop and you are expected to have eyes in your ass? Furthermore, if he has thousands upon thousands of dollars in guitars in his shop and doesn't A: See a need to have more than one employee for security purposes or B: Have a security camera system that would likely cost less than the guitar that was stolen. This wasn't anyone's fault but his man.
@jmakins5 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that was entirely your fault. You probably shouldn't have been there by yourself for that exact reason.

I’m surprised he didn’t do jail time!

Came on dude! Why is it your fault that someone else stole a guitar while you were on watch? You got conned. The meat ball is at fault 100%! Wake up. I started playing in 1959. My mother bought me a brand new ES 335 with a Bixby vibrato. It was stolen right out of my bedroom along with my Danelectro 12 string and a classical guitar that I earned with my own money! Ouch.

Jeremy My stolen guitar is a long story from Derby UK! Involving my first ever guitar (a Columbus Hummingbird copy costing 21GBP!)that my parents bought me for Christmas 1975! It got stolen from my house in 2000 (along with a few other guitars and musical items) whilst I was on holiday The local police weren't v good... Anyways.... I went down to the local cash converters (pawn type store) with a picture and asked if they'd had this guitar pawned.... Lo and behold the guy came from the back of the store with my guitar! The guy who stole my stuff got 6 months in prison... and I got my most treasured guitar back... You don't say what Neathead got for stealing the LP... Great Channel J!

The meatball story. hahaha The crime hatched and planned inside a taco bell by a dude called meatball that dresses up like a clown. 😄🤣🤣🤣 Sorry Jeremy, This is too funny. I`m not laughing about what you went through😉I`m the same type of person and that would have ate me alive for letting the owner down. You forgot to tell us if the buyer got a good deal on the custom missing the serial number?
@JeremySheppard2 жыл бұрын
The current owner wants to be vague on details of what or when he bought it. He got a great deal.

Question: Why didn't Meatball go to jail?
@JeremySheppard Жыл бұрын
I think it was two factors: my boss didn't press charges and the police didn't charge him on their one. Also, because it is theft and the item was recovered, it's not likely he would have gone to jail but pay restitution and do community service

FYI Hopefully you changed the guys name for the story. There is a statue of limitations for how long you can post a criminals picture on a building who stole from you. Would hate for you to get into trouble over something silly like telling a story.

Disgraceful stealing your guitar

Would a modern day Jesus suggest, 'if someone asks you for your guitar, give him the case as well '? Just a thought...
