I always find it so amazing how luthiers can fix top cracks. Center seam cracks are killer. Fine instruments are sensitive to heat and humidity. Thank god for guys like Danny who can work their magic!!! We are all indebted to them!!!!!

1968 was peak production year for Gibson Acoustics and it waned significantly after that. I have a Hummingbird that I bought new in 1969 ( S/N indicates 68 or 69) but it has/had a few rather unique features. A mosaic back strip, Schaller Tuners ( since replaced with Waverlys), rosewood adjustable saddle (since replaced with fixed bone). The narrow fingerboard was a nod, I believe, to attract electric players. My pickguard is glued on.The big difference of the late 60s models was the continuing move to over- bracing to prevent warranty repairs.Mine has non-scalloped top and back braces. The double X top started in 1971 (to mid 80s when the company was close to bankruptcy) and those guitars are not really worth any amount. The screwed- on pick guards were from 1967 and some 68 models. Safe to say most of what Gibson Acoustic produces today is far better.

I have a 66 Hummingbird my dad used to play the opry. It looks a little rough but still sounds good.

Hi Jeremy, I have exactly the same 1968 Gibson Southern Jumbo. I am the original owner (bought new) and it's almost all original. The original rosewood saddle was replaced years ago with a non-adjustable one, however it never intonated right. I recently had it fixed by Billy Penn of 300 Guitars in Tomes River, NJ and now it's right on the money. Had some other work done over the years. It's got a 1-9/16th inch nut width. Am I correct that 1968 was the only year Gibson had screws on the pickguard?

Cool! I'd love to hear it. Definitely a thin neck. I think it's the only year with the screws.

Danny is hard working and extremely talented at repairing guitars, but more than that - he is an awesome human being. And no, he is not homeless
