No, there are no transcriptions in the book. I never really recommend reading transcriptions for those who actually want to play in a style. 😉

Another insightful presentation, Jeremy! Here’s an apropos question that may be answered in your book (which I haven’t read all of yet!): when approaching a complex transcription such as the KJ one you referenced, would you recommend the average student mainly study/analyze what is going on or really strive to duplicate what’s being played (using slowed down audio of course as an essential tool)? Not sure this is a clear or valid question as technical abilities vary so much. When I studied with pianist Dave Frank long ago he told me to slow down a Charlie Parker solo and sing with it. I asked him if I should then play it; his response as I recall it was that would be great but singing it (i.e. internalizing it) was the heart of the matter…

Hi Ken. It's a great question! I don't think there's a simple answer. I think there are a lot of different things that you can get out of a transcription. You can work to gain muscle memory (what does it *feel* like to play like Keith Jarrett), you can work on your ear (what is that chord?), you can get down to the details of phrasing and continuity (how does one phrase lead to the next?), and you can analyze so that you can figure out why a phrase sounds as great as it does. I think these are all valuable and some might be better for students at different points in their development. So, I think singing is great, but I think there are times to play them and I think there are also times to write them down so you can study them.

Jesus, they're both so good. I hate to choose. I guess, gun to my head I'd have to say Keith? He certainly has proven his resume with all the classical playing he's done and I've heard him playing more diversely than Mehldau. But they're both like superheroes to me.

@@JeremySiskind Thank you for replying me. I listen to Dave on spotify but he played so fast and it's hard to imitate. So, could you listen to the tune: " Santa Claus is coming to town" and show us how to interpret that skill or fake it up to 99% LOL. Great to hear that from you soon.
