It's jerkbait time! The early Fall transition has begun! Bass are focusing on baitfish again and jerkbaits trigger a reaction strike in those hungry bass. If you've ever wanted to experience a wide open jerk bait bite like you've heard other anglers talk about, it's time to go give it a try!
When it comes to jerkbaits, no two baits are alike. Different baits have different applications and learning to use each bait at its best time will help you catch more fish. That said, these are the key baits that we trust to put fish in the boat. When it comes to color, it's time to get out of your comfort zone! Try the bold, obnoxious colors and you might be surprised by the results!
Below you'll find links to the baits and equipment Matt discussed in the video. We've included our best "Traditional" colors, as well as our best "Bold" colors for each bait. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Oh yeah Baby! The jerkbait season is coming upon us! I fish em all year, but it starts getting special about this time! The baitfish are really heading into the creek arms in the Ozarks. Huge bait balls showering the surface! Gotta love it! I love Vision 110's (own over 200 of em) but the OSP Rudra has really come through for me lately. The Raid, Level Minnow has been crackin em too, the quick 72 size has been the business! Heading out on the water today, but trying to wait for Fed-Ex to bring my order of X-80 Jr's. That Matte Pro Blue is awesome. Last winter I got onto a bite in a rain storm, where I got bit every single cast for the better part of an hour, and not one fish was under 3 lbs. They bit for longer than that but for that amount of time, it was every cast. Those days are what gives me crazy confidence in jerkbaits!

When do you want to use braid(no stretch), fluorocarbon(moderate stretch), Yo-zuri -hybrid fluoro, Sufix-copolymer and plain mono(most stretch)? With all the micro guides being used now on cast rods, braid with a leader is an issue for me. I can hear the knot hitting the guides and slowing down. I wouldn't ask on many channels but everything I've seen from you guys is spot on.

I've been using a Bass Pro 7' medium fast cranking stick with a SLX DC for jerkbaits XG. I do use braid to leader which probably helps make the rod more useable. 8:1 gear ratio is too fast but if your fishing in front of a moving boat its handy just have to be cognizant that you could over swim the bait. The rod actually does ok working the bait and the reel casts it fine. Only problem is weight. A few hours and your arm is done for. I think I'm in line for a curado/curado setup.

Perfect timing. We had one night that got down to 50 degrees and I knew it was about to be time to fish a jerkbait. I threw one in my last tournament to some schooling fish and it got nailed. Not to mention, it was one that I just airbrushed the night before. I just started airbrushing a week ago so that was cool. Same thing happened to a 1.5 squarebill

Love this video! I’m a jerk bait junkie too. My one special rod is a Dobyns 702 with an Aldebaran. I’ve tried all brands of baits, too but the MegaBass out catches them 5x every time. I’ve never tried the Shimano, so thanks for that tip. And you’ve gotten me hooked on BFS this year too, so I’ll need to try that little guy next. Bass eat other baits, but they hit a jerk bait like they hate it and it’s exciting! I just upgraded to Mega 360 and I can’t wait to use it to find more jerk bait targets.

Matt, you inspired me last year to try out the megabass vision jerkbait line, and it’s been a game-changer for me. I caught over 200 largemouth bass, with most coming from the vision 100jr in pro blue. Then, in Canada, I used various jerkbaits and landed in over 200 walleye and northern pike, primarily with the IBobber snappr robotic jerk bait - its secondary flash and vibration are just killer. And, to top it all off, I caught my new PB smallmouth with the Shimano World Flash boast jerkbait. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep up the great video tips!

Caught my pb in the spring this year on a jerkbait. Berkely stunna, 7lbs…craziest part is as you throw the jerkbait more and more. You will notice when you hit a school, the fish get bigger and bigger each catch. Eventually you will pull a giant that was hidden in the middle of that school just by process of elimination. It’s fascinating. I caught a 3lb a 5lb then a 7 in a row.

HAHA I am a big deal hunter and took your advise on 13 fishing sales, Rapala sales, Berkley discontinued baits, and the KVD line. Really wanting to see if you are using more budget options which means high end for my budget here in Ontario, Canada. I have almost no confidence in jerk baits, but decided to go out and practice with a Berkley Stunna 112 below my local dam. Didn't land any bass, but I did land a couple pike, one being my biggest of the year. Then lost another really nice one when it jumped and kicked the lure off. Needless to say, my confidence in jerk baits have jumped a bit. And the way those pike hit really made me like it.

Love jerk baits, but living in the Northeast and fishing in NJ and NY, and PA. We have to deal with some really toothy critters That also love to eat jerk baits, So with that said tossing out a near $20 bait to have it just there one minute and gone the next. .It can get expensive fast. So we have to go for cheaper priced baits. Would really like to see you guys test some lower priced options say the ceiling of $12. Maybe in your next expanded jerk bait video that is coming soon. Thanks love the stuff you guys offer.

Hello from VA Matt and Tim, love your channel. Is there ever a time where you just reel a jerkbait or maybe pull and stop a jerkbait, fishing it kind of unconventional? I know you always talk about the importance of not pulling a jerkbait.

is there a certain knot you prefer for jerkbaits? i’ve always thought a knot where the main line comes straight out the center of the knot is best. just because jerkbaits seem very sensitive to any input on the action. am i being overly particular with minutiae?
@tacticalbassin

As long as you're tied to a split ring I don't think it's critical, but we use a San Diego jam knot.

You didn't mention it specifically, but sort of hinted at it with the jerkbaits you recommended. I assume that the preference is a suspending jerkbait versus a slow sink or floating?

Quick question on the jerk baits: do in you direct tie or use a swivel?

Direct tie to a split ring, the Weight of a swivel will hamper the bait.

I hate flouro but lose a lot of depth with 15# Power Pro Slick8 to a 6' 8# flouro leader. Do you think Suffix 832 will get me a lil deeper as I believe it slightly sinks? Any better choices? Lighter braid? Ty

As far as that extra movement goes, will a slight float or sink kill the action the same way a little extra swim does?
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 11 ай бұрын
It doesn't seem to have the same result, not sure why. The big issue with sinking or floating is staying in their zone long enough to get bit.

I can’t spend that much on a rod because I’m too rough and lazy to take care of them properly. I use a little 6’10 medium fast Six Gill rod and a Curado 70mgl and I couldn’t believe how well it works. I can’t remember the last time I lost a jerkbait fish. It’s tip is perfect and the rod gives enough to keep them on. I’ve tried a few other rods, but couldn’t get them to work for me. It’s been tough too.

Is the Shimano Expride B Casting 6'8" Light you mentioned in your previous video a BFS jerkbait rod or are there better options? I am planning on using this rod for other BFS lures like : whopper plopper 60, megabass baby pop x, shower blow 77.7, megabass X-70 BFS, and others. Therefore is the Shimano Expride B Casting 6'8" Light a great small treble hook bait application rod? If not what lures should be fished with on the Shimano Expride B Casting 6'8" Light?

The Expride is a great Treble hook rod. It's not PERFECT for jerkbaits but neither is any other BFS rod currently made. No one has tackled that project yet but you can certainly do the job with the Expride or a Pop X stick.

So, how do you feel about the 6’10” m poison adrena? And where would you start looking on a lowland reservoir if you only had maps and 2d?
@cartersmith1268
@cartersmith1268 Жыл бұрын
I use the 6'11" + poison adrena, for jerkbaits I use jackall reranges and 110s a majority of the time. It does the job and the sensitivity is great but I believe you would be better off using the Shimano Expride B 6'10" medium. This rod is very similar and costs less.

Hey guys, I've had my eyes on the 7'2ML Expride for a while now aiming at not-quite-BFS (1/4oz~) jerkbaits/topwater. I understand the 6'10 is mostly recommended for jerkbaits but I'm a taller guy and fish from shore a lot so I prefer a longer rod. Would this be an okay rod for this application, or is the XF tip too quick for these baits. Thanks!
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 11 ай бұрын
It will function for the task. It definitely doesn't compare to the 6'10" whatsoever for the application but I've made due on two trips where I didn't intend to jerkbait and I was able to make it happen.
