I've been going through several of your cat trapping videos. I know we trap two totally different environments but cats are cats no matter where they are from. Anyways 90 percent of the areas I trap you cannot see tracks just trails due to the leaves and grass where a multitude of critters have been walking. The question is how to keep non target animals (deer) from tripping your set. Just curious because my late father always taught me to do cubby sets for cats adjacent to a deer trail, but as you mentioned in a past video you like to place the trap under the critters foot, which makes total sense. Keep up the good work im learning quite a few tricks here and will definitely deploy them next season.

I usually set under a juniper tree with lower branches, or right against the rim rocks. The deer travel out away from the rims because that’s where the lions are able to hide and ambush them. You can definitely put a “jump stick” over your trap, or hang some bold flagging over your set. I do catch the occasional pack rat, or cottontail, but that is about it. I’ve used lots of cubbies in the past, and about 1 out of 10 of my bobcats would come from the cubby set. I just phased it out on my trapline. I usually set a cubby as a last resort. I did set one with my Dad last season, and caught a cat. I’m not knocking the cubby set at all. It works great. It just wasn’t a high producer for me, so I all but quit using it. In my opinion, if a trapper can put the trap right under the foot of the animal, then the set becomes secondary, and the bait or lure a distant third. I see what you mean by not being able to see tracks without dirt, or snow. That makes it very tough. I know on my traplines I see cat tracks on about every 6-8 bobcats I catch. I use the rimrocks, washes, creeks, rivers, fence lines, and these types of long running barriers to help funnel bobcats either along the barrier, or crossing the barrier. I set the exact trail, then the exact 6” area where I think the cat is already walking. Then I place an attractor after I have the trap set just to hold their interest long enough to get caught. If I set the trap 12” off of their path I lessen my odds of catching him as soon as I make the set. Bobcats are so wishy-washy I don’t give them the opportunity to decide to walk over to my set, or not. As they are coming down the trail they are in my set. This is where some bold flagging will keep deer out of your trail. A jump stick also works really good. You can use it to get the deer to step around your set, and also guide in your cat as well. I hope this makes a little sense… I could go on all day about this topic. I fought with making large catches, and I know how frustrating it can be. With this method of “trap under their feet” I have found bobcats to be one of the easiest animals I catch, more so than a beaver for sure. Not as easy as a muskrat though, hahahah. Tom Miranda has an “Old School” video on KZbin that talks about a jump stick for deer. It’s really simple, but good info. I think he is using it in conjunction with a snare, but same principle. If I can find it I’ll share the link. Good luck, and excellent question.

Here’s the video. He’s talking about fox, and snares, but it is the exact same principle for bobcats, and a trap. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmO8fH2mpb96fqs

Run an exposed trap. Mix epoxy, put on a #3 or larger trap pan, add sand, tgen bed as usual around the jaws but leave the inside jaw area open. Theyll step right onthe pan if its the flattest easiest place to step in a walk through.
