Jerry was a truly kind man and I met him on 3 / 21 /1971, in Providence Rhode Island. He was sitting on the edge of the stage and I walked up to say how much I loved the band and his playing. He smiled and we shook hands. So as he started to stand up to start the show, I asked him if I could sit behind the amps and he said go ahead and turned to Ramrod and said to let me get behind the amps and he pushed aside a drum case and let me climb up. So after the show started I noticed the guy who was the sound man was dropping a liquid from a murine bottle on the back of people's hand and then they licked it off. I stuck my hand out and he put 3 drops on it and I licked it off. I was Bear himself and I got to know his people really well, that's an other story. I ended up sitting right behind Pigpen, who was still playing. So Jerry himself let me get on the bus and the king of making acid dosed me. That's was all I needed to know I had found something special and I still go to shows almost every year. They never let me down and I made some really good friends over the years. If you had a better first show, lets hear about it. Love to all my sisters and brothers,still here and to those who are gone, but not forgotten.⚡️🎸⚡️🖖🏽⚡️🎸⚡️

This is without a doubt the absolutely best version of Knocking on heaven's door that I have heard in my more than my thirty years of listening to Jerry. If you want to know Jerry just watch the way smiles throughout the song. He very rarely smiles like that if ever or moves LOL. You can feel the message of peace and love flowing from his very being. The song leaves me a sobbing emotional wreck everytime I hear it and sing-along with it while at the same time giving me so much hope that we may someday learn the lesson that Jerry was so desperately trying to teach us. Learn well my brothers and sisters....

A Huge Thanks to whoever made this video possible, from someone who just got on the bus about a year ago in my late 30s sadly I can never see Jerry, but I got to see Melvin Seals 4 times this year have met him and spent some time talking to him at a festival in PA this summer at my daughters first festival, couldnt ask for a nicer man security came to tell us we needed to leave that area bc we werent artists and melvin told the guy its ok he just came out to introduce his daughter, even before i met him it amazed me i would catch him looking out over the crowd seeing people dancing enjoying what they were doing with a huge grin on his face

I've been skipping through a few hours of new2Me Jerry Band shows this morning, and felt like a minor who'd been panning hard but only found enough flour to pay for supplies to pan another day; but then I found this fat nugget! Thanks guys and gals!!!..., would have loved to have been on my feet dancin or just listening in the clouds at this show. Next best, (listening to this vid), is pretty nice for sure going to d-load it. Listening to Mississippi moon as I finish writing this...My mom's going to bve buried in the Mississippi delta in a couple hours. I am many hundreds of miles from there trying my bedst to keedp the living family safe from covid19. Sorry Mom, has to be this way, but we'll get together once things get calmer on the germ front. My mother was way far from being a dead head, but I reckon she'd like some of this musical gold/best I could find Mom;RIP, Carolyn.

Been almost 30 years. Still sounds so good. Jerry operated in a realm all his own. He had technical prowess, but his playing wasn't about that. With one note, he could change a listener's entire mood for the better. I never saw Jerry play with this version of his band (with or without Clemons), but I did see JGB after Jerry's passing. RIP Gloria Jones; she and Jacky LaBranch provided harmonies that made you feel almost like you were in church. Clemons sat in with the Grateful Dead as well. IMO, he fit in much better with JGB's more traditional approach than with the Dead's collective improvisation.

When Shakyamuni Buddha taught in this world he spoke on the 3 types of Buddhas that are hoped for to appear in this world: 1) those that liberate by word 2) those that liberate by art and music and 3) those that liberate by creating a sacred space for beings to come into and experience their true nature. Garcia obviously is all 3 types of Buddha at once. What an appearance.

Thanks for this! Both stellar shows that weekend and the first of the run with, "The Big Man" Clarence Clemmons on sax. Had a great but challenging time the first night. Jerry saved me with, "Lonesome and a Long Way From Home,..... somebody help me, somebody help me!" Then this beautiful show to follow. This Heaven's Door is seared in to my DNA! Also the night I was turned on to the great Bruce Cockburn via JGB and a college friend.

Dennis Campbell old orchard? Was outside no. And I agree with the sentiment, impossible to find JGB 95 Warfield, as shining star Johnny to bad shining star, cannot find a good recording for the life of me. Yeah for some reason tickets were pretty hard for this tour, for some reason, that reason being Jerry but I remember just being so happy getting the old orchard tickets. Pretty upset I didn’t make this as well, but couldn’t get away to both unfortunately. Anyway I love you tube. Thankfully someone made a lot of great videos of a lot of great bands, and especially Jerry. Pretty sweet a dead show a day or Jerry show a day keeps the doctor away. But yeah there was a time when you could be flying out to California on spring break in 1987 and find out Jerry was playing in LA, and be surprised. Nowadays everything is known before it even happens. And that’s cool but just makes everything a lot more expensive when it comes to the concert business. But there’s paper view as well so two sides to everything. Anyway I love these videos I love you tube. Let’s hope they never get weird with the rock ‘n’ roll shows, as I think a lot of people have come to depend on them in good times and in bad. I wrote Pete Townshend the other day that rock ‘n’ roll has already save the world. What else brings such joy to people? Anyway I love the way Clemens is not afraid to play loud, as if you’re gonna play play baby. And Jerry loves it. Probably inspired him to start playing more and more himself with the midi. And then go on to answer a question about if he wish he followed in his father‘s footsteps and was a great horn player, and he paused and then answered I am a great horn player. Damn straight

Was there that night, down in front. Amazing show, and what a way to start! An incredible version of Cats. Some used to say that Jerry played better with Garcia Band than with the Dead. This was one of those nights. He certainly looked happier with JGB, but then... we all love our own projects. It gave him the chance to play a lot of blues, folk, Motown and even some reggae... and the Dead didn't do some of that (or not well, at least.) I always felt that John Kahn gave Jerry a more comfortable groove to work with than Phil... but Phil also challenged Jerry more. And he didn't shoot up with him, either.
@tomb613

SJ Cohn jerry didnt shoot up as you say.. He smoked his heroin, chased the dragon. Before you open your mouth to spread stigma make sure you got your facts straight. Whatever got him through the night is what I say. Who are you or I to judge him? Or anyone for that matter. End the drug war and end stigmatizing of drug takers........ Time to grow up.....

If you look at images of Shakyamuni Buddha historically he has two highest arhats on either side of him. Very high archangels or mahabodhisattva Buddhas incarnate. That would be Kahn and Clemmons for real. Both so winged it's difficult to count just how many wings. More light feathers each than pieces of sand in this world. Incredible to have them both there.

I was at this show, though I can't say that I remember it, other than a vague recollection of Cats. I wish I did. It was obviously a hell of a night. I can only make a couple of observations about that period. The late 80s were great for Jerry. He was lucid-- sober, I think, or at least he didn't "hit the harder stuff"-- and his playing showed it. He took his technique to new levels, though he was never a technical player. His intonation and tone were at their best. He was confident when he stepped up for a solo. My impression was that he really loved playing with JGB. It wasn't just that it was his own project, but also that it really fit his style of playing (at its heart) better than the Dead. The Dead stretched him to explore that "out" psychedelic side, but JGB provided him that groove that his country, blues and R&B playing needed. Plus, he didn't have that popcorn machine (Hart and Kreutzmann), as he put it, behind him. Sometimes, he even seemed a bit happier when touring with this project. Occasionally, I wondered if he was going to leave the Dead and just focus on this project, but it would've been hard for him to do that, with the "family" and the fans and whatnot. Sadly, from what I understand, John Kahn (despite being a fantastic bassist) ultimately wasn't the greatest influence on him. There were many times that I enjoyed Garcia Band much more than the Dead. You could count on JGB putting on a good show, where the Dead... not so much. Two different flavors... both great. I may not remember much about 9/10/89, but I know that I loved it as much as the summer Dead shows that I saw (e.g., 7/4/89, 7/7/89), and those were pretty epic.

I think I remember this show, but in my mind it was during the day. Perhaps there was a daytime show the next day. At any rate, how cool is it that Jerry is playing with Clarence Clemens, his old room mate. I think I recall that Bob Weir and Bob Wasserman opened this show. I could be wrong, but that's how I remember it. I also remember looking around and wondering why the show was so sparsely attended.

I was certainly around for this at the time but never experienced it. My take some 30 years later is that the ritual was hot summer nights were for Dead shows and the cooler late summer/early fall air signified an amphitheater JGB show. Is this about right?
