Did Jerry's voice ever sound better than this? And the guitar playing is first-rate, too. This is a powerful version of one of Dylan's most powerful songs.

The Jerry Garcia - Bob Dylan bromance is one for the ages. Mutual respect and a spiritual connection that we can see here, expressed musically and which, in doing so, takes us along for this timeless, magical journey. I love how Jerry's eyebrows raise here and there along with a little nod as he feels the song flowing through him (love the slightly more upbeat tempo!), as he steps away from the mic when entering into his solo zone, how he just absolutely digs this song and the joy he has in playing it, the grace he always shows to fellow musicians when it's their turn to shine a bit...all of it, effortless, natural. Most of all, I love how he really was having a good time here. I've watched this countless times but recently returned to view it because it's probably my favorite version of all (including Dylan!) and this time I had to leave a comment.

i like the 77 one for the solos. this one for the the vocals are much clearer. both are outstanding

You nailed it Audrey - you covered everything from the eyebrows and head bobs to the stepping back for the solos and the gracious rapport accorded to others. I return to this every so often just to see Jerry vibing, such a pleasure. Love his expressions. He was one of a kind. Thanks for sharing your thoughts so we could relate.

Jerry was a player, not really a writer, that is why he and Dylan make such a good pairing

This song is a modern epic tale on the level of The Grapes of Wrath. The imagery and emotion are second to none

To me he understood that perfection isn't the absence of imperfection about as well as anyone. Those artists always bring the most joy. Playing the correct notes all the time is vastly overrated.

Did you see the one from Mountain View with Melvin Seals and the girls and the absolutely rocket crescendo in that one?

This Tangled Up in Blue is from 7/26/80, but it’s from Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJ. You can hear the echo of the hall as well. The Capitol Theater, Passaic NJ show was 3/1/80.

Damn, The Capitol Theater always got the best shows, and had the good foresight to video them. Thank You for that. This was about six week before I saw the Grateful Dead for the first time, up in Maine. Nothing better than ol' Jerry on his "Tiger" guitar.

This is arguably the best this song (not Garcia or Hunter) was ever performed. This was about the time Garcia peaked. 77-80. Everything he did during this period was drug fueled. It was incredible music but man did he die before his time because of it.

isn’t 7/26/80 live at Asbury Park?
@bgreen36703 жыл бұрын
Yes it is. I don't even think they hit the Capitol during the Summer which are as good as the spring tour shows if not better.7-24 through 7-26-80 is some of favorite from the year besides 2-28 through 3-8-80.
