This show was the first date with a woman who became my wife. I am sure the fire on stage kindled the flame in her heart. RIP Jerry, Merle, Keystone, 2nd wife.

What makes Jerry one of a kind is that he had a way of telling the story without having to say a word. His tone, phrasing, and fill are second to none, just absolute dynamite

Well put my friend. I feel the exact same about Jerry, he is the king. Put simply, he sings straight from the heart. The reason he does it so well is because it is pure truth, no audience pleasing hooks or phony lyrics, just pure emotion and living and playing in the moment.

Agreed with all of the comments. He was the best at interpreting Dylan. He understood how to feel/play the story. Ps absolutely love the pictures & photos of the video.

What made Jerry is that you feel his glorious bright good hearted soul though his music. Only him Todd snider of railroad and Billy string have same feeling. Jerry is my religion be kind

I just recently came across a sign in someone's window, it was a light up sign, a small version of those signs businesses use with the yellow light bulb arrow and the sign is a big white square you can put letters in...anyway, it says "POSITIVELY 4TH STREET" on it. It's in someone's apartment window. Every time I walk past it I smile and wonder how many people get it.

Goodness gracious do I dare say this is the best version of the song I've ever heard ,... I suppose if you listen to every bit of their music for 15 years you would say all of its the best 😀

The Jerry solo starting around 4:30 and going on for a minute and a half is the reason I said "he simply plays the notes I want to hear". What an absolutely stunning solo during such a sweet rendition of a wonderful song.

It always strikes me how much generosity Jerry voices. Don't wanna hero-worship, but a rare kindness seems to run though everything he plays and sings. Even in a song with such bitter lyrics, Jerry makes them more rueful, more pitying, than cruel.

I love that you commented on this 12 years ago, and 7 months ago. Jerry sounded like a friendly grandpa when he was 27.

WHAT a great version! The spaces in this song, the clarity, the resonance, of every instrument, are amazing, especially for a live recording. That electric mandolin from 5:08-5:54--goosebumps! And Jerry's singing was never better: wistful, letting go, pushing away, but edged with hurt, pity, loss, disgust, resolve. America's guitar-Buddha--he's jamming w/ buddy Merl up where the best songs never end....
@davids6652 Жыл бұрын

During my thirty-year love affair with GD's music, there have been times where I've been obsessed with one song. Currently it's this one- in the car, in the den, whatever. Right now it's the kitchen, swaying to and fro (if you know what I'm talking 'bout). This must be the tenth time I've heard this amazing track today, it's so good! ✌❤💀🌹⚡

Dylan most likely wrote this song about Phil Ochs, though some contend he wrote it about the press. 4th Street is in Greenwich Village and was ground zero for the folk music scene. Ochs relentlessly criticized Dylan when he broke from the folk purist movement in the early 60's. Dylan wrote this song in 1965 and until Ochs' suicide in 1976 it was generally understood by fans to have been directed at Ochs. Jerry was a big Dylan fan and always did great covers of Dylan songs.

@@fluffywaffles As someone who listened to the GD for about 4 years before I saw them live in 1987... I understand your sense of loss; however, let me reassure you, lil jimmy... you can hear him, yes? And you can feel it. And as one who didn't see, then was there for awhile... you have it. Don't romance the idea. Don't idolize him, I'm sure he was not about that idea. He was about his craft, he was about the songs, & he was about being a good man & keeping the act rolling, but dealing with too much for one man. At least in my experience & opinion. You're listening to a live recording: you're there. It's why it happened. Pass it on.

Ok people. The day is Monday January, 13th 2019. There have been many, I was an Althea lover for many years. Even went through a period when all I would listen to was shows from the late 80s. (Coincidentally, all the same shows my ex caught as a young woman). But in this sad, post Jerry world where we are hanging our hopes on a handful of new acts (thank you sturgill) and the neverending Dead and Company tour...this one is it for me. I have never grown tired of anything from 73 with Jerry & MS. If that ain't fucking musical magic, idk what is. This is it. My lifetime, have this playing when I draw my last breath- song. Thank you Jerry.

i didn't know about Merl's demise--he and jerry had a special relationship. when jerry came out of the coma in 1986, he turned to Merl to help him play again. garcia's mind was jumbled, and it took a lot of time and effort for him to become even close to the guitarist he was prior to the coma. my favorite song from the keystone when jerry just needed time out from all the other demands he faced.

I bought the double album in the 80's just for this amazing version. Thanks for bringing the song back into my life. And people, stop arguing about the guitar/mandolin issue and just use your ears. One can clearly hear another stringed instrument entering the song at 5:08 as Jerry is finishing his solo. Don't care if it's an electric guitar or my grandfather's mandolin. Fact is, there is someone playing on top of Garcia's guitar (which is still audible throughout the song on one channel)...
