I just got the news Wales passed yesterday man. So I'm here diving into whatever I can find online. I'm too young to have seen him with Jerry and only found him last year. Soon after that I found out Joe Russo was going to play a 'Hooteroll Plus' show in NYC. So I packed up my crew and we set off for one HELL of a memorable night in the city. A real proper adventure. I'll never forget that night and will cherish it forever: the good, the bad, and the ugly. RIP Wales. You made some wild music 🌹

Couple of years ago Joe Russo put a One-Night-Only band of jazz players from The Village together at the Capitol Th in Portchester for "Hooteroll Plus". It was all the Hooteroll material plus some Miles Davis & other Fusion mixed in. Oh what a night!!!! Concert of the year for me!!!! Sadly, it was sparsely attended, since nobody was trying to sing Sugaree or Stella Blue really badly, it went WAYYYYYY over the "average" Deadhead's head . . . so they haven't done it again since.

Keith Richard is better than any of these guys, the stones play different set lists ever night. No bod compares to the late great keith, nobod!!!

Didn't know this existed. I always thought "HooterRoll" was... Far out. I didn't know this lineup made it out of the studio. Live is more accessible imo.

Can't help but wonder how Dead history would've been different if Howard Wales had replaced Pigpen at the end of '72 instead of Kieth. Jerry and Howard play really well off one another.

Where´s the Khan man??? I thought he started his musical relationship with the fat daddy on the Howard Wales band.

Khan and Merle were both totally involved with Garcia at this time. Just not at this show, or with Wales at all. I believe this is the one and only time Garcia performed with a drummer playing double bass. I’m pretty sure the other shows with Wales were with a regular single bass drum. Makes a huge difference.

If you look close at the photo, it looks a lot like Khan sitting behind the drum set.

@@DavidAcevedoAlvaro I don’t think it’s actually Khan in the photo. Could be, but I doubt it. Khan never played drums. I’ve never seen that photo before. It is an interesting photo. As far as I know, Jerry Love did play drums whenever Garcia jammed with Wales.
