I saw him in Dallas in 1983… folks leaving the earlier show told us all to leave, but it was a dinner show and my bride and parents were hungry. Well!… it was beyond wonderful. The stage rotated and he sang and played and his feet were up on the piana more than once. Every ‘Signature Move’, just for us as he pattered away. Music was world class. I got an autographed album for my wife. The good memories lasted longer than the 3 week marriage. He will be missed.

I saw the 'Killer' in Bristol England 1962,it was his second tour after the I'll fated 'one in '58. I can remember Jerry Lee walking on stage and checking with Kenny Lovelace what town he was in! .Half way through the set he stands up,kicks the stool away and takes us into the real world of Rock-'n'-roll.

My mom was the biggest JLL fan in the world. She never drank or did drugs, but you'd never know it when she was watching him. I went to a show in Florida 40ish yrs ago and was about 10 rows back, I'm glad I was 10 rows back because my mom was up front and I could see her in all her glory having the time of her life. She's gone now, but I always think of her when listening to Jerry Lee. I saw an interview with Kenny Vaughan and he said his favorite JLL music is his country stuff. He also said George Jones is the best country singer ever, but JLL was his favorite country singer. I couldn't agree more. There will never be the likes of him again!

Favourite song ‘you win again’ I saw him live when I was a kid, in Kingston, at ‘the jazz club’, he was in his prime… Not many people knew who he was in the UK back then, so there weren’t too many there… When he finished playing, the crowd wandered off, but me and my friend hung around the stage and he talked to us for a little while, so real and humble… The greatest xxx

Otis, my wife and I attended a JLL show in San Bernardino at the Orange Show ...30 years ago? Anyways, it was incredibly memorable. Although he did not play my personal favorite "Middle Aged Crazy", he played a bunch of other songs that everybody knew. It was a great vibe and a great night, he played for about an hour, kicked over his piano stool and was GONE! Ill never forget it. Rest in peace, Killer.

I saw him in Brisbane Australia in the 80's, he was one of a show of greats, Chuck Berry, etcetera all old men. Jerry Lee came out and he looked bored. He started playing and one of the keys wasn't working, half of us there thought there was going to be big trouble but he calmly pushed the Roadie away and played around the broken key. Half way through the 1st song it was like he was 20 years old again, it was the best live Rock and Roll I have ever heard.

"...and say a word, for Jerry Lee - he taught me a rocker to be..." My favorite Country musician of all time - and one of the greatest Rock and Rollers, too. The Killer - so apt a name. I saw him at the Palomino a number of times - he was there a lot in the '80s - and just to be in his presence was blessing. Thanks for sharing your story, Otis - It was very poignant. "Digging the art - and not feeling so great about the artist, sometimes..." - a beautiful quote, but not a problem I ever felt with his music. I couldn't judge him, but I knew that his music was as perfect as I'd ever heard. R.I. P. - Killer, and Thank You.

As much as I dig the interviews on this channel, there has always been something to be said for the videos where the stuff is coming straight from Otis. I've always heard weird stuff about Jerry Lee Lewis so I've never gotten really into him before (mostly because of the cousin stuff) but separation from the art and artist is what I use to justify listening to lots of stuff I do, and I think it's about time I give the Killer more of a chance. As always, it was great hearing what you have to say about your experiences with Jerry, and I espescially liked the What Made Milwaukee Famous bit. Thanks for all that you do & have a good day.

Saw Jerry Lee at the Palomino probably early 90’s. He said afterwards, “if anyone wants to buy me a drink I’ll be at the bar”. I took him up on that and realized some people did not want people buying him drinks and I felt foolish…he thanked me. I remember thinking the same that I would not see a better rock and roll show. 20 maybe 30 minute show. I guess it was okay that I did that. He had a good long run and that was many years ago. Rest In Peace.

People were dancing of course, and guys were laying money on the stage requesting Merle Haggard and George Jones songs, along with Jerry Lee’s stuff. The great thing was, Jerry Lee pocketed the money and launched into the second best version of Swinging Doors I’ve ever heard!

About 25 years ago I took my teenage daughter to a big oldies concert in Atlanta. The headline act was supposed to be Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees but he was a last minute cancellation (don’t remember why). Jerry Lee Lewis replaced him that night. He was helped out on stage and looked really frail. Once he got behind the piano he tore into a twenty minute set that I’m pretty sure blew every single person there away. Then he was helped off the stage and I was thinking what a shame it was that he wouldn’t be living much longer…….

Beautiful. I think Jerry Lee's version of You Win Again is one of the greatest country recordings of all time. The actor Stephen Tobolowsky has maybe the best podcast around. He also played Sam Phillip's brother in Great Balls of Fire. In an early-ish episode, he tells the story of watching Jerry Lee play the piano in the Peabody with only a security guard and a hotel manager while everyone else was watching the ducks. (In the same episode he tells of being at lunch with Jimmie Vaughan when they ran into Stevie Ray. The two brothers reconnected there in the restaurant after a long period of estrangement and soon began working on a project together. Definitely worth looking up.) Thanks for the great story, Otis.

Very similar story here, Otis. My Mom would play Jerry Lee's country stuff in the morning on the big console stereo as she got me and my sister ready for school. She had a lot of his records in the big pile of LPs that rarely made it back in their jackets, but the one that got the most spins was Who's Gonna Play This Old Piano? To this day that album informs my idea of what country music really is. The London Sessions was another great one. (I was an adult before I ever looked at the credits and saw how many great guitar players are on that. Peter Frampton?? Rory Gallagher???) I remember in the Seventies, my parents went to see the Killer live on New Year's Eve at the Sheraton in Gatlinburg. Mom enjoyed the show, but my Dad said Jerry was drunk and threatened to shoot his bass player right there on stage. Yeah. That bass player. I only saw him once, in "89, at a club called Bronco's in Nashville. When people used to talk about rock and roll music being wild and reckless? Yeah. That. Anything could have happened that night and some of it did. There was a fight before the show, and towards the end of it a guy who looked and was dressed exactly like Buddy Holly was violently bounced out of the club when his bulky tape recorder was discovered. As for Jerry Lee? He was the Killer. I don't remember him finishing a single song before going in to the next one. There was a lengthy diatribe regarding his cousin Jimmy Lee Swaggart ("He may have had YOU a$$holes fooled about them whores, but he ain't never had ME fooled about them whores!"). He took the guitar away from his guitar player and soloed. For a while. Picture Jerry Lee meets Sister Ray. The night ended with a long version of Whole Lotta Shakin' that saw Jerry take the lid off the piano and (after several attempts) precariously balance it on his head and resume pounding the keys with all the fury he ever possessed. I'm so glad I was there that night. I get what you're saying about loving the music but having reservations about the artist. (Tho' Mom to this day will not say a bad word about him.) I hope he made the list Up Yonder. Wouldn't it be something if he crashed his Cadillac into the Pearly Gates and demanded to see Elvis? And Jesus?! I enjoy your videos a lot, Otis. Thanks.

He was pretty old and gray, and when he keyed his c.b.mike up it would go “you shake my nerves and you rattle my brain”. Jay Brown got a new model 379 peterbuilt spec.dump every year and would sale the truck he had to people he wanted to help. He kept his trucks like new. Jay lived in snellville Ga at the time and his daughter which was Jerry’s 1st wife lived in Atlanta somewhere. He would tell old on the road stories and talk of old times back when Jerry was becoming famous. That is the only famous person I met

That's a great tribute, man. My band supported Jerry Lee when he cam to Wales in 1993. It's my proudest musical achievement. And I watched him give a stunning performance that night too. I have to say his country stuff moved me a whole lot more than the rock n roll and I wasnt expecting that.

I saw him several times, but most often at Billy Bob's in Ft. Worth. Those were the best shows! The Killer is playing his heart out in Heaven tonight....

Saw JLL in 1983 at the NOLA Jazz Festival. Great show, he was one of the greatest rock n rollers ever and he outlasted most of them. I love his Sun recordings so much.

Heartbroken on Halloween here for sure, Otis. He was the soundtrack of my childhood and on into my teenage years as well. The movie Great Balls of Fire was a favorite In my household as a kid and watched almost every weekend it seemed. We ALWAYS rented that movie. The soundtrack from the movie was played daily also. My mom STILL has that cassette tape too.Truly! a sad day. RIP, Killer.

The Killer was a great. I had the immense fortune to see him about twenty years ago (in the Bluebird in Denver-a cool dive) it was an unforgettable performance. I'm saddened.

Couldn't agree with you more, He was My Dads favorite as well. Dad was an owner operator, and i have many memories of him dancing and singing behind the wheel of that old Freightliner and my Dad was the most straight cat you ever met, Once that boogie woogie piano started, He was a teenager again...R.I.P. I'm lucky enough to have seen him at Wembley Arena, London in the late 1990s when he shared a bill with Chuck Berry & Little Richard. It seemed to me that he and Chuck were going through the motions that night. Little Richard outshone both of them. Anyone can have an off night. I once watched an interview where he spoke in glowing terms of Buddy Holly. He seemed to be a good soul at heart . Enjoyed your post Otis (enjoy them all ) 👏

Got to see him once at the Greenwood Jazz Festival in Tulsa. He wasn't as quick as he used to be, but still a great show. My Dad was with me, so that made it all the better. These younger artists that fancy themselves badasses need to study their Jerry Lee. They can't hold a light to him. Lots of songs come to mind, Another Place, Another Time is very definitely a favorite.

1980 or 81, East Providence RI, we were the second of three bands on the bill, with Jerry Lee Lewis headlining. It was our last show before going home from the tour and the band really wanted to get on the road. There was an exit to the parking lot right behind the stage (can't remember the name of the club), so immediately following our set we loaded out that back door and never saw his set. Fortunately I had gotten the opportunity to meet him and his band backstage earlier in the day. Coincidently they used to call me Killer, but I went by Danny for tht gig!

Hey Otis! Long time no see 😊 I was at the same concert at "World Mard Gras" in Circle Center Mall. It was the 4th time I'd seen Jerry Lee but the first I'd seen him with Burton. I remember watching this guy walk out and start setting up his guitar and thought... he's playing a James Burton Tele... kind of looks like him too... WOAH!!! 🤣 I remember it being a great show. Larry DeMyer, Cutsinger and I believe Becki Brendle opened the show. The short story of my best concert I've ever seen by ANYONE was Jeery Lee's 65th birthday at a Memphis Holiday Inn. About 200 fans (Sam Phillips was also in attendance) he played 3 hours and it was ALL REQUESTS!

And so the last of the great ‘50’s rock and rollers has passed. What a force of nature as a singer, piano player, and performer. I never tire of his his Sun best ofs (even vol. 2!), the Star Club concert (the 11 track version!), and his late ‘60’s early ‘70’s country albums. Oh, and his duets w Linda. And the Knox Phillips sessions. Man he was good. RIP.

I always thought What Made Milwaukie Famous was about beer. Old Milwaukee, Miller Brewing, Pabst Brewing, and Schlitz Brewing were all made there. "Another Time, Another Place" is my favorite. He was a favorite from the 50's to the 90's. Rest in peace Jerry Lee.
