I was familiar with Jerry Lee’s music and his reputation in the early 70s. By chance, I caught a performance close-up in a small club and I was absolutely blown away by the piano playing and vocals. He certainly was an entertainer. He won my admiration and respect long ago.

I saw one of his old pianos in Natchez and the keys were worn off it. I never met him but knew some of his cousins and his bodyguard David Ogle who was the bouncer in Urban Cowboy.

At the time of this incident there were apartments across from Graceland. I had a friend who lived there and hung out at the Graceland gates. He was there that night. Said Lewis was totally wasted and acting like a complete fool. Lewis was always jealous over Elvis’ popularity. Lewis made some great music but Elvis was the guy. No other performer has touched the lives of so many people. We will never see his like again.

I hate to admit my ignorance of Jerry Lee's music other than his hits. I knew he was a rare talent and pioneer in music. As a country DJ I played all of his hits, but I got into my gig in 1973 and we were doing Waylon, Willie, Tanya Tucker, etc. I need to download some great Jerry Lee Lewis pronto. Thanks for the inspiration.

This is hands down the best channel on youtube. Thank you for the videos. Anyone wants to laugh, watch Mike Judges Tales from the Tour Bus. It covers this exact incident. I was a drummer as a teen until around 32, had my son and am a single parent(yes, that means he was raised by myself only), so due to lack of time, I gave up playing. I just turned 49, 11/02, and decided to actually buy a guitar and try to spend the time learning. I want to say Thank you for helping me get back to my first love, music. My playing is rough, and my hands aren't in the best shape from years of being a laborer, but I WILL do this! Play on my friend!

As a big Elvis fan of over 50 years, I believe you’re right on track with your thoughts. Elvis and Jerry were friendly early on, but Jerry’ somewhat strange behavior and Elvis’ enormous popularity through the years separated them. It was Elvis’ uncle down at the gate that night BTW. Thanks for sharing.

Great video Otis. As a Memphian, I remember those times when Jerry Lee was at Gracelands gate, even though I was then living in Ripley, Tennessee, which is about 60 miles north of Memphis in West Tennessee. To answer your question of what record by Elvis and what record by Jerry Lee Id play right now, itd be any of the Sun singles Elvis cut (most likely Mystery Train) and as for The Killer, itd be The London Sessions from 1973 on Mercury records with an all star British musicians on it like Peter Framton and Rory Gallagher and Andy Bown and Albert Lee etc......

I saw Jerry Lee Lewis at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. He came out in a gold lame' jacket and seemed somewhat lethargic as the show started. As he got into the show with a standing room only crowd, he came alive! The guy was absolutely electric! The band was on, the crowd was into the show and Jerry Lee knew it! It was one of the best shows I have ever seen and I will never forget it. RIP, Jerry Lee.

As someone who is both a big fan of Elvis and Jerry Lee, and got to meet many people who knew both of them, I feel like I can add some context to this story/relationship. You know how it’s said that some people develop a Christ complex? Jerry Lee seems to have had an Elvis complex. He compared everything he achieved to what Elvis had done and always seemed to feel like he was getting the short end of the stick. Elvis and Jerry Lee mostly liked each other. George Klein told me Jerry Lee was invited up to Graceland quite a bit, and I’ve talked to several people who got to sit in Graceland’s music room and watch Elvis and Jerry Lee sing gospel songs together for hours on end. But Jerry Lee always had this need to one up Elvis that I think sense grated on Elvis’s nerves a bit. There’s a conversation recounted in Nick Tosches’ Hellfire where Jerry Lee and Elvis met in Vegas in 1969, when they were both playing at the International Hotel, and Jerry Lee tells Elvis, “You’re nothing but Colonel Parker’s Puppet”. Elvis retorted “If you’re so smart, and I’m so dumb, how come I’m playing the showroom and you’re playing the lounge?” So about this particular situation, it’s important to understand that at the time, Jerry Lee had a regular gig (and liked to hang out) at a little dive bar called Hernando’s Hideaway that is literally right down the street from Graceland. I mean less than a mile away. And what’s more, Elvis Presley Boulevard also turns into Highway 51 into Mississippi and is a straight shot to Nesbit, where Jerry Lee lived. So Jerry Lee probably passed Graceland every night as he was driving home from Hernando’s Hideaway. One night he gets liquored up and he sees Graceland, and it triggers his Elvis complex and he decides that by God, he’s going to do something about it. And so you get what happened. The gate guard that night was Elvis’s uncle Travis, and the reason didn’t come down is simple - he was knocked out on sedatives so he’d be “rested” to fly out for a tour the next day (that started Nov 24th in Reno, NV). This was the time in Elvis’s life when the drugs had really started to take their toll, and he would be pumped full of meds so he could sleep and then pumped full of different meds so he’d have the energy to get onstage. The mafia guys were very protective about letting people outside the “inner circle” see Elvis when he was in this kind of state (you can listen to the phone call between him and Red West from October 76 and get an idea of how diminished and out of it a sedated Elvis seemed), and that’s exactly why Elvis didn’t see Jerry Lee that night, despite colorful stories to the contrary.

Very well put! Elvis was always mentioned when Jerry spoke. On the other hand Elvis never said a bad word in public about Jerry or for that matter any body. Elvis definitely had more class and also felt that their was room for everyone in the music field where as Jerry depending on mood would always have to bring up Elvis and either be rate him or the opposite and say he was great but always had to bring him up. I also feel it really killed Jerry that Elvis was so much bigger than him and tbat Elvis didn’t want to see him at all.

Hey Otis, I just now discovered a KZbin video, with Jerry Lee talking about the "Gate Incident", and his friendship with Elvis. --- I can't put links in Comments, I hear, but the Title is "JERRY LEE LEWIS - TALKS ABOUT ELVIS AND HIMSELF - 1986". --- The KZbin channel is "d pascalini". --- It's a GREAT video! Jerry Lee says that Elvis asked Jerry Lee to visit him, that Jerry Lee was drunk, and that Jerry Lee had just been given the pistol as a PRESENT, and was told to NOT put the pistol in the Glove Compartment, because the pistol would be a "concealed weapon".

I had read somewhere, that the PURPOSE of Jerry Lee's visit to Elvis, was with friendly intent. --- It's highly likely, that, bein' drunk, Jerry Lee may have overestimated his ability to "announce" himself. --- I absolutely believe that Jerry Lee SAID that Elvis gets better Press, but, you know reporters. It seems reasonably likely that Jerry Lee made the "Press" comments, AFTER he had been asked, EXPLAINING his arrest, and Reporters spun his answer, into the REASON Jerry Lee was there. Just a guess. But like you, I had heard that Jerry Lee liked Elvis.

I like you think his country music stuff was some of his best, today I watched a concert of him in Toronto 1969 and nearly all his stuff was Elvis songs. In that concert he played guitar. He also showed a bit of his obscene side something I never saw with Elvis although they both like to move their hips and legs Personally I found Jerry Lee to be on the edge. I think JLL was envious of Elvis's fame and fortune but JLL couldn't handle his own success, he likely would have killed himself with Elvis's success. Who knows we're Elvis's career would have taken him so many possibilities. Enjoyed the vid t/y

Love your stories Otis. I was blessed to have seen the Killer twice in the early 90’s and the first show was awesome while the second was a 4 song show that thankfully Little Richard made up for by playing for 2 plus hours and at least that night blew the Killer away. I definitely loved Jerry and thought he was amazing but he never could touch Elvis as far as being the whole package. Jerry’s voice doesn’t even come close, Elvis could even do opera. As far as a vocalist the only performer who could come close was Roy. But if you put it all together, voice, moves, charisma, and talent it’s Elvis all day. If he would have fired the Colonel in early sixties and not had to endure those cheesy movies and crappy songs there would never be any debate. Go to albums would be the sun sessions, anything from the Chips Moman recordings and the jungle room sessions from 76-77. To each their own though as far as preference but I guess the fact that Elvis sold more records than the Beatles, MJ and Sinatra put together should say something. Keep up the great stuff Otis! God bless

I would go pick out an Elvis or Cash vs. Jerry Lee Lewis. Jerry was a wild one for sure, but as you stated his actions started hurting him since the 50's and early 60's. I liked some of his songs, from that time frame, but like you, when he went more to the country side, I would have to say, I liked more of his songs then. I remember hearing him the most at my older sister’s house with her friend. Me personally have never bought any of his music. I liked Elvis, Cash, Waylon, ZZ Top, etc... I have to give credit to Jerry Lee on playing the piano, he could sure play that like no other.

Very nice. I like hearing you talk! Seems to me ole 'Jerr-Lee' was maybe a bit jealous of Elvis? I've heard him claim HE was the true king of rock n roll. In a lot of his live recordings, he very frequently uses his own name in the third person. Anyone who does that has to be a little full of himself, no? Haha. He seemed like a tortured soul battling his old timey religious believes that had a self-imposed clash with his 'sex & drugs & rock n roll' live style it seems. (Ian Dury 🙂) I have bigly respect for Jerry's musicality, but he's not my most favorite country guy. Or rock guy, to be honest. His vocals always too up front for my taste. With some guilt, trepidation, etc., I'd have to pick the '68 Come-back as my favorite thing between the two. A shall however watch your recommended Jerry Lewis video. Great video as always!

When you listen to jerry Lee tell the story he just laughs it off and makes it sound like he was just there to visit Elvis but was a bit drunk and that he was never mad at Elvis and Elvis was never mad at him. But that's according to Jerry Lee. I never heard Jerry Lee say anything bad about Elvis, in fact quite the opposite but on the other hand, Jerry might turn on his own Talented sister if he was drunk enough. I really love the Jerry Lee Lewis live at Austin City Limits DVD I think recorded in 1983.

Bless poor Jerry Lee. Had it not been for his on actions, he could have perhaps been as big, if not bigger than Elvis. It will probably get me in trouble on here for saying this, but as talented as Elvis was, his talent was just a small drop, in a big bucket, compared to the endless talent of Jerry Lee. Im just so glad he had time to get his life straightened up and had several years of happiness, before he went home to be with the Lord.

Would be nice to hear you tell Jerry's side of the story. It is documented. Not saying he made the right decision that night. I mean there are some stories about him that you think no couldn't have happened. Then you find out they are true. Drink and drugs do strange things to people. Amazing he only died last month.

I read a story some years back that suggested that Jerry Lee and Elvis actually had talked on the phone prior to Jerry Lee heading over to Graceland and it was on the phone that whatever set Jerry Lee off started. Probably not true but seems plausible. Crazy stuff.

I really don't give a damn about his personal life. Elvis was druggie and eventually died from it. Elvis also dated a very young Pricilla when he was in Germany. If I could only listen to either Elvis or Jerry Lee it would be the Killer.

Certainly he got some pr, but it's hard to put a positive spin on this behavior. I'm sure it was bad for his career, but it was his self destructive acts.

I think Jerry Lee was at his best in the early 80’s. I’m not a fan of saying one musician is better than another because it’s all personal preference. I prefer Jerry Lee over Elvis.

I heard a recent interview with Rita Moreno where she was asked (in very veiled & demure terms) if she really had sexual encounters with Elvis Presley and Marlon Brando in the same week. I don't recall exactly how she phrased her answer, but the gist of it was the experience weren't awful. Also, a small technical point: All newspapers in 1976 had identical image scanning capabilities, which was NONE. Crude dot-matrix images could be transmitted across Telex lines from the ealy 20th century, but photo scanners as we think of them weren't developed for the publishing industry until the late 1970s and didn't become commonplace in newspapers until the late '80s to early '90s. Newspapers before then had to rely on analog methods for typesetting and page layout, and even after digital technology revolutionized how text was prepared for printing, it was still several years before digital photography entered the mix. The quality variation seen in those old papers reflects the personal competencies of the small armies of craftspeople employed by each publication to construct its pages for printing.

Call me crazy but I never understood the hype of Elvis. Jerry Lee Lewis was a whole lot more talented and an excellent performer he could sing anyone's songs as good or better than the originals. All Elvis could do was shake his ass at all the ladies but I was born in the 70s so what do I know. My dad was born in '47 and he said that the opinion of all folks in his small town thought that Elvis was the devil incarnate.

Elvis had a charisma like no other. The 1950s Elvis was magic. JLL in the 50s had something special and was an amazing performer. Elvis was a much more private person and Jerry Lee was not.

Elvis had a greater voice and was stylistically more versatile in many genres of music. He played great rhythm on guitar and had more charisma than anyone. He was way better looking and had an amazing stage presence when performing. Jerry was a brilliant piano player and he had a good R'n'R and country voice.
