I had a friend, now deceased because of Covid, who was a Jerry Lee Lewis fan. He saw Jerry Lewis in concert and later ran into him at a bar. He walked over to talk to Jerry Lee, who was stacking shot glasses up to a pond of about 4 inches. Jerry Lee looked at him and said, “do you wanna bet $20 can stack 10 of these?” My friend said, “no, but I’ll bet you $20 I can arm wrestle you and win.” They locked arms but before they can start, Jerry Lee’s handlers came running over and separated them, “Jerry Lee, if you break your arm or your wrist, will all be out of business.” My friend had the same build and was about the same age as Jerry Lee, so it would’ve been a very good match. My friend had a friend who was such a Jerry Lee Lewis fanatic, he named his boy, who would now be in his 50s, after Jerry Lee. This Jerry Lee Lewis fanatic saw him in every concert over the last 30 or 40 years of his life and had posters lining the walls his home. The posters alone are probably worth thousands of dollars.

Jerry Lee is Jerry Lee and there ain't no other. I saw him in the Shrine Mosque springfield Missouri 1969. First act was Hank Jr. 2nd was Loretta Lynn. With each act the crowd was getting more and more revved up. Jerry Lee came out, stood at the piano, kicked the piano bench back, started POUNDING the piano, and said. YOU KNOW WHO IS THE STAR OF THIS SHOW! and believe me buddy...we all Knew! Man he took control of that crowd and did not let them down. What an original.

And that includes Johnny Cash too, whom I love also.

@@devakikaren Thanks for your reply Karon. I also have 'Old Time Religion' with Jerry giving some impassioned bursts of preaching at a lively assembly. I just love them all. Mickey Gilly also brought out a Country Gospel CD on the K-TEL label, but it cost about £48. I have got this and of course much of Mickey's playing is identical to Jerrys' it runs in the family. Blessing to you Karen.

@@ariellalocalwaves Jerry's influence came not from Richard nor from Fats but from the black musicians who frequented Haney's Big House on chocolate corner where, as youngsters, Jerry and Jimmy Lee Swaggart would sneak up and listen, his cousin Mickey Gilley was for a while more popular than Jerry Lee, but, true talent will and did, in the end, prevail.

Love this man. Reading his bio as written by Rick Bragg who stayed close to him for 2 years in order to write. it. Bragg is a very famous Deep South writer for those who are not familiar with him. GREAT book. JLL had a great sense of humor and it comes thru page after page of his stories. When he was older and women flocked to him hoping they could go to his hotel after the show, he'd tell them they were about 20 years too late. LOL.

I “discovered” Jerry Lee in 1968. I was 16. First song I heard... “One Has My Name”..... I think it was a cover of Ray Charles. I was captivated. A voice on the radio. That began a fifty year near obsession with the talent and greatness of this man. It is impossible to tire of listening to Jerry Lee Lewis. There is no American artist (not even the great Ray Charles) that can come close. He likes to say, “It was God that give me ma' talent. He can cut my water off at any time”. From John Lennon to Kris Kristofferson to Bruce Springsteen ....including Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins... (and hundreds more).... all have paid tribute to JLL as the greatest and most creative popular music artist of all time.... period!

@gynack
@gynack 4 жыл бұрын
@Mookie Spindlehurst He's still regarded by most as a Rocker, one of the original Rock'n'Rollers, the original Wild Man of Rock'n'Roll, etc. Great Balls of Fire and Whole Lot of Shaking Going On are probably his most famous songs. However, I prefer his Country music. It's what I listen to far more than his Rock. Nobody comes near him for tearing the emotion out of a song. His voice in the 60's and 70's particularly, had that lonesome, lost sound to it, that with his spontaneous sounding way of singing made him unique - and uniquely great - at so many songs. And. of course, there was that equally unique piano.
