In this interview from 1983, Jerry Lewis talks about the 1980s film The King Of Comedy, working with Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese, meeting fans, shooting on the street in New York City, his character Jerry Langford and the Academy Awards.

Brian Linehan, who passed away in 2004, left his entire estate to The Brian Linehan Charitable Foundation to provide training, work opportunities and promotion for young actors of exceptional talent. All of the income of his Foundation is donated to not-for-profit institutions for that purpose. In the decade since his death, recipients of the Foundation’s support have included extraordinary young actors affiliated with the Canadian Film Centre, The National Screen Institute of Canada, the Stratford Shakespearean Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, which, since Brian's passing, has preserved and housed Brian's personal archive and tape library.

Today's interviewers or hosts could learn so much from this interview. The camera stays focused on Jerry Lewis. There is no doubt he is the star. Today's hosts want to dominate segments with the camera constantly focusing on the host's reactions, or poorly timed interruptions so the host could get a clever line injected. Brian Linehan obviously did his homework for this interview, and he does not compete with Jerry Lewis for the limelight. When you impress Jerry Lewis with your interviewing style, you are obviously doing something right.

I found it interesting to watch Jerry’s face at the beginning of the interview. To me, he was trying to figure out if this interviewer was going to be patronizing or authentic. Have you ever seen that interview where Jerry “busts the interviewer’s balls?” Many people see that interview and slight Jerry for it but this video demonstrates how he was when he liked the interviewer. Engaged. Engaging. Totally with you. Making eye contact the whole time. Absolutely to the point and interested in your point. I love this interview with Jerry and this interviewer. Jerry was a beautiful man. He just didn’t like ineptitude and made no secret of it as with that other inept interviewer. Many people will say they like bluntness, they like someone who tells the truth as they see it in no uncertain terms but when they actually encounter it, they berate it. Anyone who doesn’t know what to do with straightforwardness would not have enjoyed a conversation with Jerry. I love his laugh!

"Dean n Jer" explains a lot. I liked the Dean Martin show night where, sitting on his sofa, he warned everyone that if Jerry Lewis came through the "surprise" door, that would be the end of the show, because he would walk out - and he added that would mean everyone would lose their jobs. Nobody ever tried it.

@@susankaye3468 supposedly he wasn't exactly father of the year, in spite of the image he liked to project of being a real family man. His kids have told a different story which was the other extreme. Apparently when one of his sons died (who had a drug problem if I remember correctly, and was living in poverty), he refused to pay for the funeral. He also hadn't spoken to him in years. When he died and the press asked his sons, Gary and I forget which other son, if they were surprised that he didn't leave them anything, they both said no, not at all. They both said they would never expect him to give them anything. There's a few interviews with his sons on YT, and if you search on "Jerry Lewis children" you'll see lots of results.

Gosh .. great comments people .. Brian was a delightful genuine individual. I met him a couple times at the Super Fitness gym in Sutton Place back in the day. Very approachable and would remember meeting you before. Intellectual Giant !! Toronto is so overdue to become celebrated in an international light. Yes, unfortunately. Warner Bros. pulled it from distribution and it went direct to video with a new title. I think the opening scene where Jerry tries to commit suicide (with the usual outlandishly ridiculous results), as well as the narrative discontinuity of the script, was a little too cutting edgy for the corporate suits, but only conjecture on my part.

The King of Comedy was a fantastic film. It does not get the praise that other Scorsese films get (Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Good Fellas, etc.) but it really is excellent. Supposedly they asked Johnny Carson to play the Jerry Langford part but he turned it down.

I agree with you. It's a great film. But the interviewer mistakingly treats it as a serious film about celebrity fanatics when it's a comedic character study. The film's strong point is its psychosis, Martin Scorsese directs the story with a similar monomania that inflicts the main character. The result is art. And this movie makes me seriously laugh. In many ways, The King of Comedy is the quintessential Joker movie because Rupert Pupkin is the quintessential psychotic comedian. The movie also has a quality where it gets funnier the more you watch it. And out of all of Scorsese's successes, I think this movie showcases his talent for dark comedy, and he's never made another movie like it except for Wolf of Wallstreet.

@The Monarch I'm done with this discussion. Jerry Lewis would agree with you, I think. But the joke is on him. The movie is a character study just like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. He was just too shortsighted to see it. Saying it is about celebrity culture is like saying that Taxi Driver is about taxi driving. Rupert Pupkin is an example, albeit a silly one, of the actualization and then the rise to power of an individual who decides to do whatever crazy stuff he does in order to gain some kind of agency. Furthermore, Pupkin's motivations become clear when he says, "better to be King for a night than smuck for a lifetime." So pretty much he wants to make something of himself and his odd seemingly unlimited ambition is almost the art that makes this movie work.

Yes, and he did worse than that. He has manipulated the public, through media, to think that he was wonderful. Too many people know differently - especially Dean Martin. Lewis wrote the book about them after Dean died, and lied about it being a "love story". Some people think there were homosexual overtones in Jerry's behaviour towards Dean as he controlled the movies/shows. He certainly was jealous of Dean's absolute confidence in his masculinity and talent.

Jerry Lewis was a nasty bully and a narcissist. Later on we discovered that he was also a rapist, as women came forward to Vanity Fair magazine. Many people come into these comment sections and talk about awful experiences they had with Lewis. Patricia Routledge, respected comic British actor, was to work with him on a project, idk what happened but she was thoroughly disillusioned, said he was a bully -- and that he was "not funny"> So true. Normal Lear for godsake - left the show after 3 years (1953) because he could no longer take Jerry's control freak behaviour, and then later on, so did Dean Martin. although Dean left after many fights, and finally told JL he was "nothing to me but a FN dollar sign." Angie Dickinson said it was "open warfare". You'd have to be pretty awful to infuriate someone as nice and kind as Dean Martin. Jerry was jealous of Dean's natural ability to be funny - as Norman Lear said, "Dean was hilarious - could make me laugh with his little finger". He said "Dean didn't compete with anyone - but Jerry competed with Dean constantly". He said Jerry would go into self-pity mode, and they'd find him in fetal position on the floor and would have to send for his doctor. I cannot stand him. Love Dean Martin, can't stand Lewis' fake voice, and his overly childish stuff - not funny at all except in slapstick. Dean was also incredibly attractive, gorgeous, and a talented singer. Jerry constantly tried to run him down -- AND he physically mauled him beyond the requirements of the show. Just a big village idiot, but mean..Look what he did to his wife and kids.

Basically Jerry Lewis was a very talented comic when it came to being ON SCREEN. However, when he was OFF SCREEN his personality was terrible. There is a network tv program called "Inside Edition" that sent reporters out and actually interviewed his REAL daughter who is living on the streets and she is homeless. Please Look it up everyone, her name is Susan Lewis and the tv program was called "Inside Edition" He treated her like shit and allowed her to live on the streets. Jerry Lewis wanted unconditional love from his family, with his boys with Patti, not his second marriage with SanDee. His sons grew up, and resented their father. The ex wife also hated Lewis for his infidelity. Lewis was part of an old fashion way of living. Especially worse within the entertainment business where you HAD to be strong because all the nightclubs and venues, were owned and managed by the Mob. Anyway, Jerry wanted unconditional love, and for his family to forgive all his eccentricities, meanness, bullshit. Jerry had nothing left to give after the kind of work he did. I had a mother like this. But I had time to forgive my mother while she was alive, and be here for her when she dies.

As a kid I watched most of Jerry's movies from 50's and 60's, funny guy. Crazy to think Jim Carrey's about the same age now and was just starting when this came out.
