I think they focused on the kid in the wedding because the kid was the most important part of their relationship at that time. She wants the kid to have a father and he really cares for the kid. The kid is the focal point, and so is the focus of that shot.

No need to apologize for liking Tom Cruise. He's the best there is at what he does. Cinema is a huge artform and there is a time for all kinds of movies. When you need someone to make you care about something you didn't think you'd care about, when you need someone to run harder than you thought possible, when you need someone to play the best pilot/bartender/Navy prosecutor/pool hustler, you need Tom Cruise.

Never felt that Jerry ever loved Dorothy. 🤨It's like he's a love object throughout the whole movie. Like she's a wallflower girl and he's the most popular guy in school that she somehow gets and all of a sudden she completes him. 😄

Please watch Tom Cruise in 2004's Collateral. Probably his best role and he plays the Bad Guy. I think you will appreciate the night shots around L.A. The hi def camera that Michael Mann used was very cutting edge at the time and the detail looked amazing. Fantastic movie, Jamie Foxx is also great

That "flip-tackle" at the end really hits different after Bills Damar Hamlin incident. I hope he recovers in full. It was very powerful to watch NFL come together for him. It reminded me of the Danish soccer player Christian Eriksen that sufferd a heart attack on the field when playing in the Euro-Championship. He is OK now and plays for Manchester United. Thanks from an NFL-fan from Sweden.

One of the interesting things about this movie is that the couple gets married super early. Too early for standard story structure, but also too early in the relationship. I think that's why the camera focused on the kid, because the movie was trying to "deglamorize" the event as much as possible. Edit: Ah, I see Shanelle comes to the same conclusion at about the 20 min mark.

Bonnie’s screen time is excruciatingly short in most movies she’s in, and this is no exception. I’m not a fan of Crowe, Cruise (he’s great at his craft, but his real-life persona just pulls me out of his characters anymore), or overdramatized romance, but Cuba, Bonnie, and pretty much all of the supporting cast make this movie watchable for me. I would probably like this movie more if they got rid of the main plot lol.

The mission statement does make another appearance late in the movie. At the very end when Rod is on the TV show and gets his big contract, right before that Jerry has a friend introduce him to Troy Aikman, Dallas Cowboys Quarterback and massive star at the time. Troy says he enjoyed Jerry's mission statement, and its clear he is interested in chatting more. From this I always took that Jerry has now put his mission statement out there for people to read, and will use it's philosophy, less focus on business and more focus on personal relationships, to run an agency with a small set of premium clients, with him and his wife offering a more personal experience for their clients.

A nice little detail my buddy pointed out after we saw this opening night in the Jerry-Rod relationship and their dynamic is how physical Cuba's character is with Jerry. It's constant. It starts in the airport when Jerry just lost his number one client and is 'cloaked in failure.' He starts being Jerry's motivational speaker and his style of doing so is to push and grab and shake him at any and every opportunity he gets. Once you're aware of it, it becomes a funny running joke in and of itself. It's also interesting how the role of motivational speaker keeps passing between the three leads where Jerry motivates Dorothy to do an impulsive life choices to Rod and Jerry switching motivating roles at the first act break to Dorthey motivating Jerry at the end. It's a neat hat trick the screenplay does balancing three separate stories and having them converge. Oh, and Cuba winning best supporting actor for this role and his iconic acceptance speech when they try to play him off stage with the music unsuccessfully is one for the time capsule.

All good performances, yes. I don’t disagree. This one, however-IMO-is his most versatile, nuanced role. He IS Tom Cruise in the beginning (no doubt), cocky, confident, sure of himself. By the end he’s real. He’s obviously been through something that changes him-and we believe every bit of it. My wife at the time absolutely hated Tom Cruise. Didn’t get the attraction or fascination everyone had for him. After we watched this movie, she immediately turned to me and said “Now I get it.” I’ve seen this movie at least 10 times and his role never gets old. Watch the others and tell me if you can say the same.

Everything from the touchdown/injury scare on is really affecting. You watch Rod complete that transformation into a Bigger Deal, the kind of player that gets the "quan" (which they made sure the audience gets by having that moment with Jerry making the money sign at the general manager and him saying "I know, I know") and you get why he's so overcome both in that moment and in the moment when Roy tells him about his contract because they spent the time showing him and his family. It's really a whole additional storyline about "knowing your worth" in parallel with Dorothy's motivations throughout the film. I always loved how they set Jerry's appeal to Dorothy at the end in the middle of the divorce support group. It's like the final boss in overcoming estrangement. Loved your reaction to Kelly Preston beating the absolute shit out of Jerry. RIP to that very beautiful and criminally underused actress.

When this movie was made, they were the defending Super Bowl Champions, which gave them 3 Super Bowl wins in 4 years. They have not been back to the Super Bowl since. Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame Quarterback Troy Aikman made a cameo in the movie, asking Jerry to give him a call after Rod gave Jerry a shout out on the TV show. And then when his a gent tries to hug him after Troy says: "Why don't we have a relationship like Jerry and Rod?" Troy then pushes his agent away😄 Again, great reaction, as usual to an awesome movie!💕

Kind of wish people within Disney would propose such a mission statement but, like in the movie, they would applaud them publicly, then privately fire them. Tragic.

Lord, 1986? I feel old. Another Cruise film that showcases his acting is Collateral, with Jamie Foxx. Cruise plays an assassin in this one, but he's ... chilling. His character doesn't play the sadist or the crazy. He's merely calm & businesslike the whole time. It's frightening.

See his movie Singles. A romantic comedy set in early grunge Seattle. Cameron Crowe nails it. Nirvana regretted not appearing. The guy who photocopied his mission statement is Alice in Chains guitarist/singer/main songwriter Jerry Cantrell. Jay Mohr's (Bob Sugar) sister and my sister used to be roommates in collate and are still friends. Somehow, he and I have never met. We always ended up at their summer beach house on different weekends. The entire mission statement was a DVD special feature.

26:57 - I thought so! You kinda had me there with all the "Was this her first movie?"'s and "I think this was her first"'s. What with you knowing more about movies and actors than me. Can't remember what I saw her in before at this point though.

If you liked Cuba Gooding Jr. in this one, then you should definitely watch his performance in "Radio" -incidently another sports movie; an amazing movie I should add.

If you liked Cuba's performance, you need to watch his Oscar acceptance speech.

Yes. The Oscars-production trying to "play him of stage" just added to his speech, like a real life movie score.

01:26 I feel attacked that Shanelle goes through Cameron Crowe's Filmography and completely ignores my favorite film of his, Singles (1992). One of Matt Dillon's iconic roles, Bridget Fonda was never more adorable, and the film is steeped in the 90's Seattle music scene. From the amazing soundtrack, to Pearl Jam portraying "Citizen Dick", to cameos from members of Alice in Chains & Soundgarden, including a memorable appearance from the late, great Chis Cornell. Not forgetting a quick acting role from Tim Burton also. I hope Shanelle finds time to watch this great film.

At the end where Jerry is giving his "You complete me speech" he is talking about how he misses his wife and suddenly it shifts and he says "We live in a cynical world.." and Renee cuts him off. WTF was he going to say? It didn't fit the rest of the moment and I just think it's weird that he says that. Does this bug anyone else or just me? - Also, another great Cuba Gooding Jr. movie is "As Good as it Gets" with Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson and Greg Kinnear.

This is definitely not Renee's first movie! Empire Records is an awesome indy movie that I highly recommend and came before this movie.
