I almost thought that the lovely Jerry Portnoy, the most brilliant harmonica player for myself anyway, he’s just amazing and I thought that when I saw them all together with Muddy Waters they showed just of much of Jerry luckily. I have watched them in 1977, not sure where but they were great, then the North Sea Jazz festival. Thank you Jerry because I watched them both more times than I can remember and I have learned a lot from you…thank you so much!🌹

Cool guy,...he's was Muddy Waters, harp player. He may have been the so called second fiddle, not getting much credit, but I was always aware of his great harp playing. Muddy was bigger than life and the ultimate show man. Jerry helped make Muddy Waters blues sound so great.

Musicians are full of emotion and passion and Jerry Portnoy is a true fine harpplayer, he gave a cue to the drummer, and the guitarist wasn"t paying atention ,i'm sure they drank a beer after the show,no big deal , that's how it goes ,thats live music !

I first met Jerry at the Peanut Barrel in Chgo in 1976 when he wasn't anybody! Then he joined Muddy and hit it Big Time! I resaw him in Italy after 34 years and wanted to chat a little. He said he wasn't up to it cause he had to sell his cds! That was a real bummer!

Is that guitar player with the hat on Otis Grand???
@dancabana80966 жыл бұрын
Just wanna give my opinion about that 1:44 bad reaction of Portnoy... Well, he could have turned toward the guitar player and put a bit more volume in his playing at that moment to show him again what he wanted. Then, that mistake from the guitar player (mistake??? really???) could have been the opportunity to make the rest of the solo stronger instead of putting a bad mood on everyone... I was a bit shocked by it because I think he is a great plyer and always was respectful when playing back in any band he was in!!!

I just LOVE IT when Jerry tames that guitar player who thinks it's time for him to "be cool". Disciplining sidemen is a most important part of being the guy out front. More sidemen need to be tamed and taught their role.

Harmonica players can be pretty annoying...much rather here the guitar player
@chriswinter82553 жыл бұрын
@@Rockandrollgeerage I'm a harmonica player and I agree. Harp players are USUALLY the most annoying, talentless divas on the bandstand. A good harp player knows, a little harp goes a LONG way. Be careful with that little 10-hole tin sandwich. It can be screechy and annoying as fuck!
@flaviofulves2765 жыл бұрын
1:44 Totally unnecessary that attitude.. And actually evenmore considering was his mistake, he made the signal only to left so the musicians in his right couldn't see him. Some people are insecure and immature their entire life
@ash73243 жыл бұрын
He had less than a second to signal and stay on beat, it's all business on stage like that. I very much doubt he meant anything by it likewise I doubt the guitarist took it as such
@musicofanatic10 жыл бұрын
Jerry can be pretty tough if you don't play what he wants. A lot of times an artist like him gets hired without his band and provided a band at the festival. Sometimes that band is less than well-versed on how to play some Chicago blues music properly.
@flaviofulves2765 жыл бұрын
what? the band in this video was playing great!! was his mistake ! he turned only to left to make down signal , so the musicians in his right couldn't see him

@mikesteagel17989 жыл бұрын
Bonsai Bean As a harp player and frontman myself, professionalism means something to me. Any pro, and most amateurs know that you NEVER act like that to another musician on stage. My guess is that you're not a musician.
@msaintpc7 жыл бұрын
I agree. That was some straight BS on Jerry's part.
@madogblue7 жыл бұрын
Jerry's reaction was simple human nature. It's the job of every member of the band to watch him for cues, especially here where there has been no practice and he is the guest front man.
@msaintpc6 жыл бұрын
No matter what the musician's jobs are, there's one thing we professionals know for certain, no matter who in the band makes a mistake, the star never has the duty to denigrate and efface members of his band while in public view. That was a bad mistake on his part because musicians will remember this and they'll charge him more money to accommodate him on stage and on gigs, plus the older, more established and influential musicians will lose their respect for him if he makes this stage behavior habitual. Those older, well connected people that run this business can stop a career in its tracks with the mere snap of a finger. He's a good harp player though. I remember when he was in the Muddy Water's Band back in the day, he was a beast.

from this video is no longer my idol. The attitude he had with his guitarist at 1:45 is very ugly. Just because I play a note about the place where I was going to play his harmonica solo. It is a fanfarron. He does not have companionship codes on the stage and I doubt he has them below him.
@bobshuwab19882 жыл бұрын
Yeah, kind of ruined it for me too. I could give him the benefit of the doubt, but he didn't let the guitarist in anywhere in the whole song.

Yeah shitty attitude. But that's the sorrow you can hear in his music. That weight he's able to convey has to come from somewhere.
