I think any hobby we do has fun moments, and moments where you actually have to build your skill. Same thing happens in sports, we play because it's fun. The more you move up, the more it becomes work. I've experienced this with comedy. I made people laugh all the time, just because I was having fun. Now I have to actually work at it. I love the process tho, and I still just riff on stage. I told myself instead of trying to be funny, just be fun at first. Probably bad advice, but it helped me.

Question... I think this is an obvious question. Myself as a pro musician with so many years and hours of performance, if you were to ask me to create a cool bass line on the spot. It would be easy for me to do, it prob won't be the best bass line on the planet but because of the years dedication I've had I can create and improvise on the spot. Is this the same case for comedy?? I have issues coming up with jokes quickly and I'm sure that's the same case as with me being a musician, if I don't dedicate to the craft my mind won't overflow with ideas. Is that the same case?? Thanks love the videos.

Roland De Aragon It's very similar. I played trombone for years and played with some very talented musicians. As you know, your improvisational riffs would be different solo as opposed to with chord progressions moving in the background to influence inspiration. Same with comedy. Although with the time I've put in writing and performing I can do both on the spot or in a writer's room bouncing ideas. But it definitely comes down to time applied to the craft. I kinda equate it to music in that every joke I've delivered, heard or written, becomes a valuable piece of the mechanics for every joke or bit I write today or in the future. I hope that makes sense.

Hey, I played trombone too, all the away to the college jazz band, though it didn't get me any pussy but I still dug it. I switched to bass. Same deal. I read your book Breaking Comedies DNA 3 times already, I've already read like 20 books on comedy writing and it's the best one so far. Keep it up.

Ha! That's awesome that you played trombone too. I used to do a joke it was simply, "I used to be a musician. Yeah, I read an article that said that women are more attracted to guys who played guitar... I (ahem), played the trombone..." What's interesting is as simple as that joke is, it always gets a laugh. I'm glad you like the book. I've been getting terrific response from it. I'm getting the soft cover printed soon.

Hey Jerry...whats a good technique for building a good set up?
@LeonAllanDavis
@LeonAllanDavis 6 жыл бұрын
There is no "technique". You have to learn rhythm and timing. For exquisite timing, there's no one better than Bill Cosby. For rhythm, I like Flip Wilson. Check out his "the Devil Made Me Do It" routine. Biff! Bam! Boom! Dead-on perfection. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoSvmpmblpiBfrM

A good set up is not intended to be funny, just factual. A good set up should also contain some kind of "hook" (a device in storytelling used to make create a little tension and make us want some kind of resolution). Some times that can be done with a question (more like a riddle fashion of a joke) other ways are to start with an analogy, (is-like). Or sometimes just use a statement that urges a comment. For example, "So, I'm in love... don't tell my wife." When you say "I'm in love..." the audience is expecting some kind of clarification or follow up. Or sometimes just state a fact: "I'm Irish and Native American..." One of the best ways to write set ups is to just write 50 facts about you.

I think "over-analyze" is the wrong description of the situation. When I set out to write a routine, it's always evolving. I do the rough outline, then keep adding and subtracting bits. It's a lot like sculpting an image in clay. Take a little off here, add a bit more over there. And just when I think it's done, I get a flash of something really cool so I have to go back and find a place to work it in.

Winnie Zie might feel she's losing her sense of humor because, as Jerry says at 10:53, she now knows that comedy is very simple, the magic is gone when she can see the magician's technique, and she no longer experiences the surprise which generates the laugh.
