There is nothing wrong with butter -- it is a natural fat. Southern traditions have bought into the idea that we must use vegetable oil and similar products because they are healthy. The problem continues to be the misinformation that began decades ago, that saturated fats like butter are unhealthy. Coconut oil, one of the healthiest oils, is 90% saturated fat and does not cause heart disease or weight gain. Processed oils have been normalized into the notion that these are healthy -- vegetable, canola, soy, sunflower, safflower -- however, all of these are commonly ethier partially or fully hydrogenated and extremely unhealthy during long-term use. "No transfat" is a distraction because this merely indicates that it likely contains fully rather than partially hydrogenated oil and is equally as bad for you or more so. The fraud is that fat from meat and dairy products is unhealthy. Much less heart and cardiovascular disease existed with the farm diet before the introduction of processed oils to replace lard for cooking. Additionally, the increase in added sugar to foods and especially processed forms of sugar (high fructose corn syrup containing mercury, sometimes labeled today as only corn syrup) play an important part in rising health problems in recent decades. Artificial sweeteners have also been proven to be more dangerous than ordinary table sugar as an ingredient. The latest is sucrulose or "Splenda" which can create liver problems with regular use. Stevia products can be a healthy alternative and the best forms can be purchased online without additives like preservatives or sugar alcohols.

I moved from NE Ohio to S. Carolina almost 8 years ago. I've lived through blizzards, subzero temperatures, tons of snow, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, springs where it rained for 2 weeks straight, 70° one day and 30° the next. Sure some of the things you mentioned would deter some people from moving here (the "unhealthy foods" you cited- there's unhealthy foods in every state!!!) but not me. The weather, the beauty, being able to go to the beach whenever I want to, the southern people (the most polite people I've ever met) simply cannot be beat imho. I love it here!!!

I moved to Greenville SC about a year ago from WA state. Dude, the drivers here completely ignore the speed limits - it’s like a speedway everywhere I go and I tend to go slightly above the posted speed. It’s not uncommon to see drivers going 60+ in a 35. …and don’t get me started on how many drivers blatantly run red lights. It’s super dangerous to drive around here.

Finished school in 1994 and moved to Charlotte,NC to work and raise a family. 27 yrs later, my wife (from Myrtle Beach) and I sell our Charlotte home and purchased 43 arces just 40 miles south of Florence, SC. We love it! Very rual. Living in a RV for the moment as we build out our homestead (chickens and cows). 10 miles from I-95, so we can get to big cities in other states if needed. I’m in Ohio and the housing market here over the last 7-8 years is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Homes that were bought for $130K in 2015 are now being sold for $590k. I’m talking about tiny, disgusting, poorly built 950 square foot shit boxes in quite mediocre neighborhoods. Then you’ve got Better, average sized homes in nicer neighborhoods that were $300K+ 10 years ago selling for $750k+ now. Wild times.

My wife and I, transplants from Ohio & Michigan moved to Florida to escape the weather, etc. decided 3 years ago to move to upstate S.C. once again to escape this time the hurricanes, alligators, high insurance, traffic, rudeness, snowbirds, etc. and to this day never regretted it. Yes, we have thunderstorms bugs, pollen and so on but all of that is overshadowed by the overall cost of living the moderate climate most of the year and primarily the people who are caring family oriented friendly and extremely helpful. That includes those of all ages. Never, have we felt more at home. Even though neither of us has family in the area, our acquaintances all treat us as such and have from the time we moved here. Yup, the food is not necessarily the healthiest but we found a solution. We don't eat as much and balance our diet while still enjoying what is offered here. God bless those who love the big cities, ridiculous traffic, high cost of living and rudeness. We hope that they stay where they are and not bring that all here. If you insist on saying how great it's there, stay there.

As a South Carolinian, I attest you are very accurate in what you've said in this video, IMO, it is absolutely imperative you do not choose to drop your roots in a flood prone area. One negative is Hurricanes and we are overdue for a serious destructive one of those, which can turn the majority of the state into a disaster area, I reference Hugo 1989, major destruction coming inland. I just came back from my trip to Greenville and the surrounding area, and it hit every wow factor for me. My trip was intended for a potential move in the near future. I listened to your cons and honestly, none of them scare me. I'm from NJ where the mosquitoes will eat you alive. In central Jersey alone, which is not big an area, we have 3.9 million people and they just keep on packing everyone in. Traffic gets so bad 3 times a day, that sometimes it takes 15-20 minutes to drive 2-3 miles. It's faster on bike. Pollen dust for a week is a vacation compared to an entire month in NJ. I also visited Greenville in August and while yes it was hot, the humidity didn't seem as bad as it gets in NJ. Yeah, i'll take a pay cut to move to the Greenville area, but when it comes to mental health, mental stamina and overall happiness, I will take the lower pay in a happier place. (When I visited, everyone was happy, inviting and welcoming) I also found there was just so much to do while I was there, I'd never be bored. And Lastly, affordability.. The pay scale is different yes, but with the research I've done, a working class family with kids can still afford to live whereas here in NJ, $80k/year for a single frugal person like myself can barely get by. Great talking points and I'm glad you posted them here. But I'm ready to move and Greenville SC is my ultimate destination for relocation.
@Joy-wd3wc
@Joy-wd3wc Жыл бұрын
That's a great depiction. I plan to relocate to murrells inlet and await my home to be rented. I have a child to raise and the way that NJ is you have to be rich or poor. Or the single moms have to not work to get health benefits. It's a state for the elite.

I live in Hightstown, NJ and I am considering a move there for a band. I am a singer and an artist. I agree regarding the traffic here, especially up north and the rudeness on the road is unapparelled. Even going food shopping..there are too many people here..But there are my friends and a lot of fun things in NJ to do as well. The main reason I am considering a move is the wildfire smoke wreaking havoc with the air quality here in NJ. I missed a ton of gigs last Summer because of it. Regarding hurricanes, that does concern me. Just have to do more research. Considering Savannah as well. Did u ever do the move?

@@1artistvocalist I didn't do the move only because I got a job back here in NJ and couldn't refuse it. Otherwise I was leaving. I'm not far from you (Princeton) so yeah the rudeness and craziness of the area has gotten out of control. You wouldn't have to worry about hurricanes in Greenville. It's far enough inland where it's not going to cause destruction. You would however in Savannah though. Very beautiful and eclectic there. As far as Greenville goes, it's an expanding city, lots of culture with a very fun atmosphere for everyone. Small suburbs all around the city with small town vibes if that's what you like.

Thanks for your review, Jerry!! Even though I've lived in big cities overseas while growing up, my mom's family was from the Upstate of SC. After living in big cities growing up, I always appreciated the kindness and great weather in SC. I've been living in SC, since 1976. Of course there are things that I do not like about SC, just like many other states that I have visited, but overall, I'm happy living in SC. I've been retired since 2011, but I agree with what you said about the lower wages in SC. However, there are companies like BMW, in Spartanburg, and other German auto parts suppliers for BMW, that pay well. It also depends on what type of work you do, whether or not your wages are low. I have horrible allergies also, but I take medications to help me through those times. Personally, I like the wildlife and do not feel threatened. Again, great review, Jerry!!

I loved this video as you reaffirmed the reasons I am moving to SC. I bought a really nice house 10 years ago in Goose Creek with plans to retire there. I am so glad I did as the house has doubled in value and as it has been rented all this time it has been a great investment. I am in the NYC area though not the city but can't wait to move there for everything you said, especially the slower pace of life and the really nice people. My tenants who moved down from the North tell me how nice the neighbors are and how much they love living there and also about all the critters that are outside which surprised them the first nights at the house. It wasn't the plan but I will keep that house rented and plan to buy another one in the same community in a few months to move to. My friend moved to Goose Creek from here a year before I bought the house and told me how great it was and now 11 years later he still says the move was the best thing he ever did. I saw the house on line and the price at the time was a no brainer, I had my friend look at it for me in person and made the deal over the phone. I wish I could have made the move years ago but as I own a business it would have been a financial hardship to leave then but I sure knew I wanted out of New York and now more then ever. Who knows, maybe I will be your neighbor in SC :)

Several years ago, while exploring several Southern states as options for retirement, I visited a realtor in Virginia and made the mistake of telling him that I was also looking in other states, including The Carolinas. Without hesitation, he told me, "here you're a Yankee. In The Carolinas, you're going to be a Damn Yankee". Taken aback, that conversation soon ended, but I went on to explore The Carolinas. Beautiful states, but my impression (however accurate or inaccurate it may be) is that there are two significant demographics there: transplanted New Yorkers who have brought their big pensions and overbearing personalities, and the native locals who quite justifiably resent the population explosion and the subsequent effect on their culture and environment. I may be completely wrong, and draw criticism from both sides for my comment. In the meantime, I think I'll live and let live. New York has suited me for over 50 years and probably will for the remainder of my life. These high taxes and overcast skies have kind of grown on me, anyway. There's no place like home.

@williammonney4378 I can't help but ask - how are your retirement investments keeping up with the sky high taxes of NY? If they're doing really well, let me know who your financial advisor is. If you worked in NY during the golden years for a government agency (and got a fabulous retirement package), then that really tells me why you're happy to stay put!

@@SwimminWitDaFishies I'm a retired local civil servant with an adequate but unspectacular pension, and a Roth that's doing okay, but I historically have invested very conservatively, so consequently I'm not a millionaire. I have the taxes rolled into the mortgage which means I mostly pay the taxes and interest on it, and continue to work full time in my "retirement" at NYC pay rates to stay ahead of the curve. I see many people doing both better and worse than me, so it is what it is. I usually stop complaining when I see the homeless in the subway. Happy to stay put? I find that the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know. For financial advisement, I highly recommend Primerica Financial Services. They are everywhere - I am sure you can find someone local. I would not trust anyone else with my finances. Good luck.

I would agree. I’m a native of the Carolinas living in SC near the Charlotte metro area. The area I grew up in and loved for so many years does not exist anymore. It’s just louder and more crowded. It’s too much growth, way too fast. And the blending of other cultures can be a clash at times. I still love my home, but I miss what it use to be. You may not agree, but that has been my experience.

@@RoRo-pd7qw I do agree, and I sympathize. I looked at houses in Haxhaw, NC. It looks as if it was once a quiet little town. From the looks of things today, people from my neck of the woods are turning it into another version of Long Island, and they seem oblivious to the fact that some of the native residents don't appreciate it. But that's self-absorbed New Yorkers for you. If I relocate, it will be to get away from that, not go to where there's more of it. I also think its a shame that the beautiful landscape of NC is being bulldozed in order to put up these crowded, cookie-cutter "subdivisions" that people are so excited about. You really have my sympathies for what's going on in NC. I just hope that Southern folks realize that Yankees are not all the same.

I grew up and still live in the south (but not SC) and my lifelong observation is that southern people are no more "friendly" than northern people. Sure, they may smile and be more polite to you and less directly confrontational in person, but when you are out of earshot they will tell friends and family in no uncertain terms what they really think of you. And if they are really "old school" southern, they may do it something like this: "He is so obnoxious, bless his heart" or "She has such a big nose, bless her heart."

Also Greenville also has the friendliest folks around. Loved that when I first started visiting your state. I wish most of the people in Canada and in the US were like you, just shooting straight, no BS. The slower pace of life is worth considering. I have visited Myrtle Beach in the past for only a week back then in 2014 and we loved it. We had to drive 22 hours to get there from Mississauga Ontario. And on the way, we saw a lot of beautiful places and the countryside. Who knows, probably in retirement. We will spend the winters in south USA.

I've been here for 7 years, and have been retired for the past 2, before that, I spent the majority of my life growing up/living in the Detroit area. As I listened to all ten reasons, I reminded myself of the fact that any place is as good or bad as you choose it to be. It all depends on your point of view. I'm living here, so I CHOOSE to see this area as a great place to live and retire. It's all too easy to find all of the bad of any place. Look for the good, and you'll find it. That said, the Carolinas aren't much for food meccas. Because of the auto plants, I could find any kind or style of food I wanted, Here? Not so much. But, on the upside, I have learned how to cook the foods I miss. It's all a matter of perspective. If you decide to make this your new home, welcome!

I lived in Greenville about 3 years ago, but I worked in Industry. The Inland port @Inman SC generates a lot of manufacturing jobs. You can still buy a farm in Upstate SC, btw. Yes, wages are somewhat depressed, but everyone who worked in RTP in North Carolina or the Pharmaceutical plants up North can ask for comparable salaries if you have a extensive skill set. There is a lot of affordable housing in the Central part of SC( including cool historic houses), but you need to land a job in towns like Iota, Abbeville, and Camden. One thing I don' t get about Buncombe county NC and Greenville SC. There is no public transit between Greenville and Asheville. Seriously! There is no public transit to GSP airport. Either you take Uber, rent a car, or hire the Hickory Hop shuttle. Avoid I-85 and take Amtrak's Crescent to either Charlotte or Atlanta if you live in Upstate SC. PS. You forgot that I-85 traffic drives everyone slowly crazy. If you relocate to Greenville, you need to either live in the Greenville city limits, take state road 25 home, or any of the country highways instead.

Traffic accidents several times a day. We used to get a little fender bender maybe once a month but its daily now. We had a man get bit by a copperhead snake at the local walmart a few years ago. Here is the truth about SC.. It was not called the lowcountry because of flooding.The term “Low Country” was originally coined to include all of the states below the Fall Line, or the Sandhills (the ancient sea coast) which run the width of the state from Aiken County to Chesterfield County. The area above the Sandhills was known as the Up Country and the area below was known as the Low Country.

With all the people moving there to South Carolina from other places like the midwest, northeast and elsewhere, I gather things are constantly changing there. Number 11: If you’re moving to Horry County (and I’m pretty certain this applies to other areas) don’t expect to have to infrastructure keep up with the Horry County Council’s policy of uncontrolled volume and sprawl of home building into preserve and wetland areas. There are not enough doctors and hospitals cannot handle the number of new residents and that is before considering the summer tourists. Unconscionable waiting periods in ER waiting rooms, lack of hospital beds, and exorbitant wait times to get in to doctors or dentists (frequently it is literally months between seriously needed treatment). Roads cannot handle the traffic because they were never widened in anticipation of growth. Number 12: unbelievably high auto insurance rates due to volume of accidents. Coming from NY 13 years ago I was astonished at the rates down here. And insurance companies continue to get approval to raise rates. Number 12: Hurricane insurance near the coast and hurricane evacuation zones. Evacuate? Definitely, but where to? Flooding within a 100 mile radius can close roads preventing return to your home, even if it turns out Myrtle Beach never got hit by the hurricane (more often than not, predicted “direct hits” end up heading further north.

Now half of these people have brought Thier attitudes and ways with them. This is the south and we like to respect our neighbors. Because I worked at a restaurant/gas station and a laundromat I crossed paths with alot of public. The reason that it is so hard to get a house here is because investors keep buying houses which also driving up prices
@JerryPinkas
@JerryPinkas 28 күн бұрын
I hear ya! Home prices are high in the entire United States due to a combination of factors, including a shortage of available homes, rising demand driven by population growth and shifting patterns of where people want to live, and increased construction costs for new homes. Low mortgage rates in recent years allowed buyers to afford higher prices, further pushing up demand. At the same time, limited housing supply-partly due to restrictive zoning laws and labor shortages-has struggled to keep pace with this demand. Additionally, investor activity, where large firms buy homes to rent or flip, has further reduced inventory. All of these factors combined have led to elevated home prices across much of the country. Be persistent! You will Find your deal. Thanks for watching and commenting here on this channel. See you in the next video!

Try going a little further south on the coast... Like Surfside Beach, Garden City, Pawlys Island, it's a lot nicer than Myrtle Beach, but still close enough to do the tourist thing ... I think you would really enjoy your vacation more.. Those areas always have great restaurants that are more "localized".. I'm sure somebody may get mad for me spreading that tid bit of info. But, I want people to enjoy their time when they visit!! Take Care 😇

At this point, due to worsening storm surges, coastal living anywhere on the East coast is both a massive risk and a poor investment. The safest place to move to in the Carolinas is the Piedmont region. If you want a beach vacation, just rent yourself a cottage on the coast in July. The Piedmont region has less extreme weather and it actually cools off in Fall and Winter. Among the most well regarded places to live in, in the area, are Asheville, NC, Knoxville, TN and Chattanooga, TN. That's my two cents. Hope you find the right place for you, wherever it is.

Great video. Thank you! One thing you forgot to mention is the intraplate seismic area around Charleston, South Carolina which is capable of producing very large earthquakes such as was the case in 1886. That earthquake was estimated to have been of the magnitude of 6.9 to 7.3. If you go to Charleston, you can see the reinforcements in the walls of older buildings that were added in the post-quake years.

We moved to Durham NC, from San Francisco 6 years ago, both states have all the same attributes in common, and we can deal with all of them, however one thing nobody mentions is how crappy the schools are. If I had known how bad the transition would be for my kid I would never have made the move. Thankfully after the first 3 miserable years we found a school my kid could tolerate.

We live in Upstate! Moved from big city Charlotte NC 20 years ago! Never looked back. We were transferred here and felt a sigh of relief . Country living but in the city limits!!!! Lol We are surrounded by Countryside, cows, 3 big lakes and waterfalls & mountains! Mild winters and gorgeous seasons! But the pollen can be bad but it only lasts a few weeks at very first signs of Spring. I saw a couple snakes in our our neighborhood at beginning of summer..but they disappear soon..and mostly are black snakes that are scared of humans! Lots of squirrels tho bc of all the gorgeous trees. I feed them with the birds. 😅. They get hungry too. We love love SC ! ❤️ but we do have red clay soil here near Clemson. So we had to plant centipede grass. Easier to grow. We travel to Greenville for hustle bustle. We are in our 60s and yes friendly friendly atmosphere and good vibes but YESssss slowwww drivers ...lol I'm uptight so I do get frustrated. 😌 But the big loud trucks ( pick ups) that these young boys jack up and put loud mufflers on them are driving me insane!!! THEY MAKE THEM AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE SO THATS THE ONLY REAL NEGATIVE THING I HATE! It doesn't bother my hubby or my two adults boys but it Def bothers me! But cops say they can't regulate or give out tickets ..ugh..praying this changes at some point. But overall We are very happy! Big city life not for us.

Here's something else to consider. Because of the long-term heat and humidity factor it promotes a lifestyle of physical sluggishness and limited activity. Because going without an AC unit isn't really an option here, it tends to encourage people to stay inside and avoid outside for much of the day roughly May through September. And particularly those activities which are physically demanding. Although it isn't blazing hot and humid all year, it's enough so that it tends to set a slower pace of life. Maybe not the healthiest lifestyle overall either.
