It's the same way colors work on LCDs and the old CRT screens. LCDs have a precise layer of color filters overlaid on top of the black and white pixel grid. CRTs had a mask with holes for the electron gun to shoot through, and color phosphors precisely aligned with the mask generated the colors when struck by electrons. Only difference is those are backlit with an internal light/energy source, while this is lit by ambient light from the front.

Always confused when E-Ink color displays use RGB when they should use CMY. When you combine light it gets brighter, and when you combine pigments it gets darker, which is why printers use CMYK (they add in black because otherwise they'd have to use all 3 inks at once). The E-Ink displays get darker when they combine colors, so it should work like printers, not screens.
@Lord_zeel10 күн бұрын
In the case of Kaleido screens like this, they use an RGB filter layer because it's filtering the light that will be reflected off of the screen. E Ink also makes a screen called Gallery which is a true CMY - the ink capsules actually have 4 colors of ink in them including white (not sure why they went with white and not black?). Gallery screens actually do function like printed pigments because they are reflecting the light off of the colored ink, rather than reflecting it off of white ink through a colored filter.

Well, now I need to do more research on how the color filter works because that’s pretty damn cool.
@Lord_zeel10 күн бұрын
It's pretty simple really, it's literally just a layer of material that they printed colored squares onto (yes, literally printed). The screen under it is the same black and white screen that Kindle's have used for years. The screens are made by E ink, the color version is called Kaleido and the black and white version is Carta. The advantage of this design is that it's the same tried and true tech, the refresh rate is relatively good for an e-paper screen, resolution is good, and it's known to be pretty reliable. The downside is that the added layer darkens the screen, any kind of filter will always absorb some of the light and that happens here resulting in the Colorsoft screen appearing dark and gray when the front-light isn't turned way up. The other downside is that since the color layer is always there, always visible, it makes the entire screen look textured and makes some black and white text look less crisp as a result.

What helps even more is Kindle themselves SYNC your "legally obtained" .epub files AND progress on said files so its seamless across all your kindle app and devices, they actually make it so much easier lmao

Definitely do not use a vpn when going to these free library websites. Their ads and pop ops may get blocked. 👍

I highly recommend the e-ink Kindles. And as for content, I also recommend not purchasing the books from Amazon and using it with the app that your local library uses.
@Lord_zeel10 күн бұрын
My understanding is that on top of being cheaper, Kobo is better integrated with library borrowing and borrowing is available outside the US unlike Kindle. My recommendation to anyone not interested in buying books from Amazon is do NOT get a Kindle, buy one of the many alternative.

@warriorhero945 heat treated disposable blades are very easy to break when pressure is applied from the side. They are only strong in one direction. Try it yourself, you could probably do it with your hands.

I prefer a DRM-free digital copy over physical books. You can make backups, view it on multiple devices, store it in a cloud drive and have access to it anywhere

The solution to Amazon not actually selling you the "book" (the file) but just the right to read it: Buy from somewhere else and convert it with Calibre.

There's absolutely no reason nowadays to purchase a digital book when you can get it from the library for free unless it's an extremely rare book. And most of the time those books unfortunately won't be digital anyways.
@benamisai-kham589210 күн бұрын
I purchase cheap large bundled PDFs of rare books on Etsy and pop them into calibre 😂 I don't have the space for thousands of books physically but I can very much store them on my computer or kindle as long as I have the space 😂
@riseabove30829 күн бұрын
Lots of reasons for digital over paper. Font size can be changed bigger or smaller. Lighted reading for in-the-dark moments. Space saving. Not having to hold a book open=tiring. Lighter. Portable, convenience, can carry hundreds of books in a smaller package.
@astranger4485 күн бұрын
@@riseabove3082 And there are loads of books that don't exist on paper from starting authors. Also loads of 'the complete works' from long dead authors. Best of all, they very often cost like $0.99.

To pass down books to my kids on my e-readers in my household. I transfer the epub or any other ebook file types to the devices and don’t have to worry about loosing books ever. I also make a backup on my google drive if I do need to restore all my books to another device.

It's super easy to rip the books off the device when offline and store them on another device. Do so at your own risk as you have to strip copy protection, but if you have paid for the media in question, well, you should be able to assess that for yourself.
