Can confirm this is not the way to get rid of weeds. My dad had a propane torch weed burner and was using it near our 100 year old barn. The weeds were gone, but so too was the barn 😂

Speaking of weeds, my friend told me about the cardboard method. For my front landscaping I basically surrounded my soil with cardboard, leaving openings for the bushes and hostas. The cardboard keeps sun away from the weeds and will eventually break down, but also create a barrier for them now to grow.

Composting is a very easy, but time consuming and tedious way to get more out of your garden. That device seems awesome, and I'd love to know how it does in the future. My dad and I while we lived in Alaska had a huge 10x10 composting area that we would use a snow plow to rotate the compost throughout the year. Worked great, and we always had fresh great dirt. Pretty much any food waste, and any brown paper (non-bleached) would go into the compost bin, and once or twice a month we would go and rotate a bit of it, put the new stuff in, and cover it. Once or twice a year, we would buy/fill a few bucket fulls of worms, and release them into the compost bin. Once we did that, it improved the composting rate by a ton.

Commercially compostable items generally needs more heat and time to decompose. A home compost stack might not get hot enough for them, but commercial composting plants can generally achieve higher temps and let things sit longer.

A friend told me that putting shrimp shells in the compost tended to result in very high temperature. So high that his mother had experimented with boiling eggs in the compost. Now this is hearsay, though I don't doubt she did try it, but I'd be amazed if boiling the eggs actually worked. Temperatures that high would kill a lot of the bacteria, micro organism and worms that is what's breaking down the compost.

For the composter get a bigger size one and if you want to make more put a container of some sorts and put it out in a place where everyone know where it is and throw organics in there (example: tomato scraps , potato skin , bones , egg shells , paper tissues , used coffee grounds ) until its full and then throw it in the composter , in our home we have a 100 gal and a 35 gal fixed composters and they regularly filled hope it helps edit: spelling

A good option to help the trees reach a better opportunity to live in the UT climate and soil, is to dig the hole of 1 cubic meter, then fill that hole with good top soil (black full of organic material), or as you point it out, compost and then use to fill those holes. Then a lot of water for the first 36 hours, that would help the roots of the trees to grab the enough nutrients to help the tree grow. And all the burned organic material, used firewood, those weeds made charcoal, all that black stuff would help to enrich the soils.

Cover everything with 4" or so of straw. That allows a thermocline to form and keeps your soil from drying up too fast. It'll also get worms to come closer to the surface to help break down your biomatter. From the looks of it you've got a ton of wood chips in that new "soil" you got. Covering that up with straw and keeping it moist will help break that down into nutrients your plants can use.

Get yourself the square foot gardening book. You can make square foot gardening soil from compost vermiculite and peat moss equal amounts per volume of each, not by weight. mix it together well and then the next year you just add compost and then you work it into the soil with a pitchfork and every year you just add compost. it works a lot better than the raised garden soil that local nurseries tend to sell, which usually is loaded with wood fibers. Good luck.

Seeing you are working your garden, saying your little Man is growing like a weed seems fitting. That boy is going to learn so much from His Mom and Dad that he might be a genius by the time he graduates kindergarten, and if not it won't be due to having parents who arent smart, or aren't capable of teaching their kids a lot, because they themselves failed to pack their gray matter with knowledge like the two of you have to share with him and fill his gray matter with. A very efficient way to both get rid of the weeds AND slow them from coming back is simply to weed-eat them then without picking them up, run a garden cultivator over the soil. This both digs the roots up and gets rid of the bulk of the weeds. It also aerated the soil and put back the nutrients in the grass. This promotes healthy soil and worms and the like, around your garden. If you get everything ready, so you can just run it around all your jobs, you can rent one when it is time to turn over your garden beds and then get all the jobs done in one go.

Suggestion! When you go to plant your trees, dig a bigger hole. Try to also break up that root ball that's in those pots, so that way the root structure is loosened up and they'll have a much better chance of sprawling out rather than potentially being bound to their little hole, sucking them dry of chances to get water. Also, try giving them a berm for deep watering, as well as a healthy 1 foot layer of mulch around them, protecting their precious roots from the sun, retaining moisture, and slowly feeding the tree nutrients. You'll have much better success with your transplants.
@Filmthechannel

You should mix a table spoon of the bed soil and new plant soil into the new hole. You also need to rough up the bottom of the plant to get rid of the planter shape to help break up the roots, but don't break up the root ball, just the bottom of the soil.

Tip : The weeds that were pulled out, -Portion them into two. -Chop them into manageable chunks. - Burn one half of the the portion of weeds. -Mix it with the other half. - Layer it down on the bed and add the top soil on top of this layer. -See the magic in a few months. This is the best way to reuse weed and it really helps improve the quality of the soil. This was the way my Grandmother used to plant veggies and flowers. Do try and share if this helps. You could also layer the horse manure first.then add the mixed weed chunks and then the top soil.

You might want more than one of those composters. The problem with those as opposed to the ones where you pile new stuff in on the top and then take out old stuff that has broken down from the bottom is that the old and new are all mixed up together. When you go to take stuff out, you get a mix of the old and the un-biodegraded new. With more than one, you can rotate them so you're only taking old stuff out of the one you put stuff in last year (or longer depending on how many composters you have).

Cut and dip is the name of the game for vines. Snip the vines near the base and dip the ends in a jar of strong herbicide. Within 30 seconds it needs to be quick.

I highly recommend using a thick layer of wood chips. This will prevent the soil from drying out quickly, reduce water usage, and create mycorrhiza, which are fungi that enter into symbiosis with plant roots. It's very cheap and efectiwe way to grow all kind of plants

Get a 55 gallon drum, fill it with water and submerge the weeds in it. All the nutrients will leach out and break down. Then use the water on the garden.

@@Fizzy_Soap Yeah I thought about that but my backyard looks like a warzone. I had a garage built, so there's a trench for the power conduit that was never filled, a huge "canyon" around the garage and stones everywhere, and it is all very uneven in general so using the mower was pretty hard. I will replace everything with pavers and to a nice stone thing next year, so this was just to keep the place under control for the kids

This works really well with smaller (see small) weeds when they first shoot! Don’t give up! But there is too much water in the cell structure of those weeds for that to work effectively. But small weeds, it’s the perfect thing! Plus, it kills the seeds too!!

One small correction, you built the garden LAST year, you said 3years ago 😆😆😆 If that was true that would mean it would currently be like 2022 and I would be old. That couldn't be possible. It's actually only the year, **looks at calendar** ......oh.., oh no....NOOOOOOO!! 😭😭

Your garden and Somers In Alaska's gardens were both so much fun to watch last, can't wait to see how they come out this year! If you don't follow the Somers, check out their page, you should see how big the vegies get in their garden since their growing season is pretty much 24 hour sunlight! (They are in North Pole, AK).

Cover the planters in plastic to help keep the water in, you can poke holes for the plants to grow and it will save water.

Get you some 12v RV pipeheaters and a tank heating pad to stick under the tank. They don't use too much power and they keep things moving. I use them on a grey water system that is sort of like a rainwater system aside from the source.

Outdoor carpet works well at keeping the weeds down. You can spread a bunch of cardboard or newspapers under it first if you prefer softer footing. Make sure to get the kind that has REALLY good UV resistance. That composter is a little tiny for a garden and it sorta looks like everything could use a lot more water. If you transplant trees into dry ground, they have a REALLY hard time getting started. Also with seeds, it helps everything to use enough water to make the ground soft.

Try to keep the area around the tree (circle dia. approx 2-3 feet) free of grass until the tree is like three years old. Helps the growth of new roots of the tree and the grass doesn't take away of the nutrients

I do Vermicomposting with Red Wigglers and they can make seeds sprout faster and make the soil beautiful and very good for fish bait even though I don't fish or know anything but fishing lures are overpriced when your food scraps can make a endless supply of Red Wigglers.

Put something else than a red plastic cup inside your compost. This will start to decompose and will disperse fine particles of platic and chemicals into the soil making it slightly infertile which could lead to your plants dying after using that compost next year. I would suggest making a separete batch of compost which you will not use for your plants and in which you will put the red cup. apart from that, great video, love what you guys are doing!

Most biodegradable plastic requires temps of 60 degrees celsius to decompose. I tried a spoon in my compost pile. It looked exactly the same after 3 months.

Most of it will stay the same because composting needs time. Large companies can do it faster by using a specific grass/woodparts mix. They often use water and turn around the compost so it will compose faster. Commercially it will take about 6 months if you do it with the earth in mind.

You should use the square hole method for your tree hole… There is a permaculture planting method where you use a rock and pre treat the bottom of the hole with some leaves and twigs so that it is biomass fuel for the microbiome that will sprout up and will give you 5 years of growth in 2 years… and firm up the roots plus you can dictate a little on root growth by pre treating where your water drainage is so the roots will grow in that direction.. love your videos and work ethic .. hope to see you for years to come but I would say if you are happy where you are.. you have done enough and I’ll just enjoy all of your hard work you have done up to this point.. congratulations to you and your family.. love my little ones and hope to have more. Enjoy the quiet I long for on my farm in my head.
