I would guess its the same as apple, with a very thin layer of saphire on top of the glass. It will protect against light abrasion, but the layer is so thin its flexible enough for the force to scratch the glass below it with anything other than light abrasion. Its the same reason why you can scratch anodised aluminium, despite the aluminium oxide layer having a hardness of 9. TLDR It provide scratch resistance to light forces, but harder forces scratch through the protection to the weaker layer below.

Hey I just wanted to say that I really respect your work, the reason I say this is that I usually watch you videos and think it would be pretty easy to replace a screen until I helped my dad replace one for his ipad, long story short... it took forever and required a lot of patience but eventually we did successfully replace the screen.
