A dairy farmer shares his lifelong dedication to raising Jersey cows, emphasizing their personable nature, efficiency in reproduction, and the superior quality of their milk, which is higher in protein, calcium, and vitamins. Facing the volatility of milk prices, he innovates by starting a bottling operation, embracing vat pasteurization and non-homogenization to maintain the milk's natural state, ensuring the survival of his cherished herd and business through perseverance and a unique niche market.
Dairyman Garry Hansen couldn't count on a consistent price for his milk due to the volatility of the dairy market that nearly drove him out of business. So to save his cows, he had to become a processor and distributor of his own milk.

This kind of a farm isn’t where the majority of people are getting their food from- most dairy comes from massive factory farms where they treat the animals terribly!! Be are about what types of farms your dairy is coming from!😁😁

When I was young, there was a market for all-jersey milk. It was recommended that children be given all-jersey milk, because of the additional nutrients. Somewhere that seemed to have been forgotten. I still remember the bottles labeled "All-Jersey Milk" with the picture of a Jersey cow wearing a crown. At the top of the bottle was the "kiss" of cream. I'm glad to see all Jersey milk coming back. Nothing better for children.

The Jersey would have to be my favourite breed of cattle from the research I've done they seem to be very friendly & your video proves this even further, I also love It how you use voice commands to call your girls to the dairy not many farmers do this here In Australia they use quad bikes. I would have loved to get my own hobby farm with a jersey but due to disability & Illness I was not able to do this so whenever I get a chance to visit a farm I jump at the chance. Give your girls a pat for me & keep up the fantastic work It was a very informative video.

Sounds like you really love your girls. Kudos to you for not giving in iWork all of the challenges that the Dairy Industry places in small farmers!! If I were in your area, I would be buying your milk for sure! I live in Canada where milk has quota and prices do not change. I love the look of your farm and the passion you put into it!! Keep it up! People are moving more and more towards small and local. Thanks for educating. :)

I like Jersey cows. A kick from a Jersey is a little love tap compared to the bone-shattering crack from a craggy Friesian! Compulsory pasteurisation is a pain in the arse for boutique cheese makers and lovers of whole raw milk because it does destroy some of the milk's flavour. A way around it is to bottle some of your raw milk in the usual way and take it to the Farmers' Market, labelled "Pet Milk Not Intended For Human Consumption'. Your customers will know exactly what the product really is. And in this day and age of regular herd testing for TB and other diseases, chances of catching a debilitating disease from drinking milk raw are miniscule. Farming families and their friends have been doing just that for generations without a single case of milk-borne disease afflicting them. Cheers, Col, NZ.

Studies show that most of today's commercial dairy cows (Holstein) produce histidine, to which many with asthma and allergies negatively react, whereas old world cows (Jersey and Guernsey) do not produce histidine. I think an awareness campaign + marketing = Whole New Market. Do you know of anyone selling Jersey products in Madison, Wisconsin? I've searched the Net and spoken with farmers, associations, and a cheese buyer at Whole Foods, all to no avail. Thanks + best to you and your Ladies!

on-farm sales of raw milk are allowed in Oregon but these raw milk dairy farmers were not allowed to advertise their product. Just this month efforts to change that stipulation were made via a lawsuit by raw milk dairy farmer. You can read more about it here: www.oregonlive.com/health/index.ssf/2014/02/raw_milk_dairy_farmer_in_orego.html

Correction: 'non-homogenized'. Homoginisation breaks up the fat particles so the cream will not rise to the top. The un-natural fat particles that result can cross the gut wall inact, without having been digested first, which can lead to health issues.

I'd say he relies on artificial insemination. Jersey bulls are very dangerous and why waste precious pasture feeding something you only need once a year? Plus you get the best genetics and can select for traits you want in your herd.

A shame to have to cook that milk before they can sell it; definatley not 'natural', but this type of pasturization is better than the 'flash' or ultra-pasturized methods. Non-momgenized is good too - but if people ever get the chance to drink 'fresh squeezed Jersey juice' bottled in glass... they may never be able to drink that stuff in the plastic cartons at the store ever again. (Those plastic cartons transfer synthetic chemicals to the milk. Don't take my word for it, check it out for yourselves, people.)
