In this video part of my mini series I will be using the Terrazzo chips made in the previous video to create some Terrazzo Coasters.
I will then be talking about sanding.
I have to say I was expecting more chips to show through and I think as a beginner I will soon learn the best method for creating the real Terrazzo look I was after.
I am going to try placing chips in to the mould first and see what the difference is.

I love this! I never even heard of Jesmonite until KZbin recommended your first video. My grandfather did terrazzo when he came to America from Italy in the 30's (my brother found one of the floors he did at Mayo Clinic in 1940). This would be a wonderful tribute in memory of him. Thank you so much for all of your videos! I'm in the US so they've been extremely helpful!! When I'm doing terrazzo I dry sand the same day with 80 grit (don't be scared of the scratches) then wet sand with 120g, 220g, and a fine sanding sponge (I think its like 400ish). It makes the process soooo much quicker for me and the material is more responsive. If I still see some scratches then I do go back with some of my finer sand paper to clean it up.

Glad you're going to try putting a layer of chips in the bottom of the mold, hopefully that works and I'd imagine that would save a lot of sanding. I did some research on how to make these and it does state that you start with a rough grit sandpaper (wet) and work your way up to a smooth grit - who knows? it's all a learning process. They are quite pretty but I'm a lazy bones when it comes to sanding that much. 😂

@@ClairesCraftyCorner I agree, with the idea of putting the chips in the mould first. That way, you have a greater chance of the flat face of the chips being visible on the top face. I also think a thicker chip would be beneficial. I think the best way to sand those coasters, would to be by sticking full sheets of various grades of wet & dry paper (approx A4 size) to a piece of flat glass, plywood, MDF or MFC. Like a big emery board lol. I really enjoy watching & learning this series with you. Keep up the good work! 👍

I watched a video from Tina Le making a terrazzo jesmonite tray. She bought a kit off etsy that came with sandpaper. It shows to wet sand. She started with 220 grit and went through what looked like 4 different sheets and ended with 5000 grit. So you were bang on with wet sanding. It looks like jesmonite isn't a readily available in the US. But I'm sure once it takes off in popularity it'll get easier to find here. I really want to try it. I love these coasters. The grits go from low numbers/course up to high numbers/smooth ... low numbers are rough rough .. the harshest roughest grits are like 40 / 60 / 80 etc ... then the medium grits are 240 grit upwards to around 300 /500 .. then the really smooth smooth silky smooth grits go up from around 800 ... up to 10,000 ... for a polish shine finish ❤️❤️❤️ sorry for the essay 🤣🤣 I use 180/240 grit to get all the top layer off .... then smooth it all out with 1,000 or 1,200 grit ... I'm just starting my stages of investigation, but wanted to ask, the sandpaper you used in this video, did it scratch the jesmonite?
@ClairesCraftyCorner
@ClairesCraftyCorner 2 жыл бұрын
heyyyy Jodie ... sand paper can scratch it yes .. but I use a coarse grit the get all the layers off .. then use a fine git to get rid of the scratches x

I don’t know if it was that you did not put enough in or what but this is the first thing you have made that I was very disappointed with, if the medium that you put all the terrazzo in was clear and let it show through then it might look better
@charliedogg74

The medium with the jesmonite doesnt come in clear. It the concrete look only.

That is technically the “clear” non-pigmented jesmonite. Maybe a nice clear resin with these chips could be beautiful tho.

Hi Claire! A quick question: when I sand (wet) my products I noticed that its color started to fade. Is this normal? Is there a way to avoid it? I didnt seal it yet but I'm not sure it will bring out the same color effect. Just wanted to hear your thoughts. Thank you! :)

Heyyyy lovely... I have not noticed this at all ... I know the water gets cloudy but when dried off the colours should be vibrant still ... I have only done 2 projects with Terrazzo.. so I might have just been lucky xx
