I'm rare to defend the Duggars but people would be surprised of what kids are capable of when parents don't just assume a kid "shouldnt" or "cant" do something until an arbitrary age is met.

And then wonder why their teens can’t. Yes accidents happen but we can’t live in fear and what ifs. The people that had an issue with this video are the same people that don’t teach their young children to swim because they might drown. Even when not knowing how to swim and get themselves out of a pool puts them at a greater risk of drowning.

Katy your the one who is making a issue out of this I saw the video of him chopping up celery,and he was doing a great job.These children have very responsible parents.!fYou getting experts n this was just stupid. Hopefully you will read the comments the people put on here. You need to get it right sometimes! I don’t know what world you live in . but kids who come from big family’s help out! Where have been living under a rock?

MoreMemes Great example. I know a man in his mid-50’s that cannot swim. He can’t swim because his brother drowned in a pool, and his mother always kept him away from pools, the beach, etc.-she didn’t even bathe him in a bathtub with 3 inches of water because she was terrified. While I understand her fear, isolating her children from knowing how to swim & proper water safety wasn’t the correct way to handle it. The right thing to do would have been to enroll him in swimming lessons with a trained lifeguard that would not only teach him how to swim but teach him how to get himself out of potentially dangerous situations, like swimming parallel to a rip current.
@UnluckyOctopus
@UnluckyOctopus 4 жыл бұрын
stealth reporter it’s very tragic. I have heard the story so many times. “I never learned to swim because a family member drowned”. Sometimes there isn’t a horrific tragedy it’s simply the fear of drowning that keeps them away from all bodies of water. I grew up around a lot of water, my Mother had an Uncle who drowned as a boy but she took your approach to the accident and taught me how to swim before I could even walk. Anyways that’s some unsolicited back story to why I chose to use it as an example.

There is more danger in “dull” knives than others. “Dull” knives are never a good idea!
@dawn5227
@dawn5227 4 жыл бұрын
True, it requires more effort to use a dull knife which reduces the control of that item. Just think how hard it is for us adults to use a dull knife while chopping. It's easier and quicker and far more comfortable to use a good sharp knife and fingers do not have to be held so close to where your chopping, making it safer.

This! Ironically, a lot of people who don’t teach their children to cook and clean end up with adults who can’t cook, clean or do basic household stuff. Kudos to Jessa for teaching them these skills. That’s not something a lot of fundies ascribe to, having boys learn this stuff. Ben likes to cook if I recall correctly.

ok this over babying our kids generation is nonsense. I was cutting using a knife at his age,, why are people way over reacting? I watched the video and as soon as i saw Spurgeon with a knife i knew there would be those who would over react. I just dont get this generation,, i grew up in the 80's, and according to parents now days we were abused.. we didn't wear bubble wrap to ride our bikes, we played in the rain and mud, we walked to our friends houses with no one walking us, we rode in a back of a truck, we helped our parents cook, work on the lawn, work in the garage, we drink from the garden hose.. if we fell or cut ourselves it was a lesson to be more careful. Those kids were not in danger, drama drama drama is all some people know. people see a little glimpse into their lives and all of a sudden they are experts.. what is this generation coming to? I worked where I had to report to CPS any child abuse i saw and this is not child abuse or reason to be afraid,,, when you see real abuse you know this is nothing. Let your kids learn and be hands on which will include not always doing something right... it is ok.

I'm a nurse & have also worked with kids for a long time. The last decade or so we have had a huge issue with kids being behind on certain motor skills / tasks because parents have been over relying on "baby friendly" or more like "lazy" items. Example: not just sippy cups but the non-spill sippy cups & we have many shocked parents who learn a child should be able to drink out of a regular (child-size) cup at around 12 months, give or take. Its stuff like this that is holding kids back. Parents need to get a grip.

I 110% agree. What hurts the kids is holding them back. Babying them over everything. Man I must be a child abusers the way I raised my kids lol. I didnt do the whole talk to them like a baby. @Finding My Light I agree with you 💯%. I would like to add that many parents (not all) coddle their kids way too much these days. If a child falls & gets a scratch or bruise the child starts screaming acting like they're gonna die because the parent/adult swoops them up & coddles them at the 1st whimper. As long as my children/grandchildren were still conscious & breathing & didn't have blood gushing or bones broken after they fell I wld start laughing. They wld start laughing as well & go back to playing. Fyi, They now range from 36-9 yrs old & healthy. "I'm going to raise my kids to whine & cry every time they bump their knee". Said, NO ONE EVER.

Finding My Light amen!!!!! If this child was on that master chef kids show mo one would have a issue at all! In fact they would praise the parents. I am a mother of 14 children, I am very hands on teaching my children life skills at all ages. My oldest is 28years old and the youngest is 2. I am proud to say that all of my children who have left the home already are amazing, they can cook, clean, and fix whatever needs to be fixed in there homes. They know how to use tools and balance there check book. Everyone has a great job or stays at home to care for their children. We could not be more proud of them, however this comes from us only training our children from the time they are little to do what they need to learn skills. Children want to help and you can make it fun, I by no means agree to the Duggers teachings but I do not see what the big issues are with this. If we treat the kids like the only thing they can do is color and play dough we are not teaching them to do anything in life but be lazy, and live in my basement forever. No thank you!

Now I’m not a big Jesse fan, but he seems to have great coordination, and looks like he has been taught how to safely handle a knife. I’d say she taught her kids kitchen safety and she was watching them. Also, the knife didn’t have a pointed tip. She knows her kids better than anyone else. Even though the Duggar’s have some horrible controversies, I don’t believe Jesse would ever put her kids in danger with potential weapon.

Honestly my parents gave my sisters and I knives at young age (table knives at 1, steak knives at 2 etc). The thing was that they taught us how to use them. Since that seems to be the case here good for Jessa letting her son have and use one. I had a friend in high school who wasn't allowed to use any knives at all. In fact when I had my 17th birthday party at a restaurant she handed my mother her table knife because she wasn't allowed to use it. She had driven herself to my party yet wasn't allowed to use a knife to cut up her food (she also didn't know how to use one at all). My 7 year old little sister ended up teaching her how to hold a knife and how to cut up her meat that night. I felt so bad for her because of how embarrassed she was about it.

It’s not like he was running through the house with the knife, people need to leave Jessa alone.Getting kids involved with cooking helps them learn to cook and have an interest in what they are eating and helps develop good eating habits. I think it's good to teach kids at a young age, if they are able to do it, why not. I guess every one has there owne options witch is good, that's what makes this world go round. But I dont live with her so I dont see everything she has tought them, so I'd be the last person to judge her. J.M.I 💛🙏💛🙏💛🙏💛

that's incredible, teaching a child at a young age to cook and use a knife. I didn't use a knife like that until I was about 12.

I am a full time nanny and I let the children be in charge of stuff. Also knife skills are amazing to teach children! They learn so much by being given responsibility. They become comfortable with themselves And know that they are valued.

Anyone who has a child who has gone to a Waldorf or a Montessori school has probably seen their 5-6 year olds cutting food with knives too. It's not that uncommon, y'all.

We started letting our children help with food prep when they were toddlers, e.g. tearing lettuce for salad, mashing cooked potatoes, using a mezzaluna to cut softer things like apple slices and cheese, etc. As the got older and their hand-eye coordination and focus improved they were allowed to start using knives their hands could handle -- real knives. We taught good technique and supervised well. My then 5 yr old was dumbfounded that a 10 year old visitor had never cracked an egg before, and promptly taught her the way we teach it: crack it on a paper towel covered table (to absorb any egg goo for easier clean up!) then into a small ramekin to check for shells before adding to the big bowl. As a Girl Scout Leader I've taught several kids how to use a vegetable peeler, how to properly cut veggies, and even how to pour their own juice. In some instances I find parents are afraid of their child hurting themselves so they don't allow it, but in just as many cases it's because they can't or don't want to take the time to teach. It's faster and more secure (both for the child and the food) to just do everything themselves. FWIW, my now 9th grader is in a technical high school with a specialization in Baking and Pastry Arts, so clearly it's paid off for at least one of them LOL!

Kids in other countries tend fires & wield machetes. She knows her own kids & trusts they will be ok. People worry too much today. Kids used to be covered with "boo boos" just from playing outside (by themselves). My brothers kids are now teens & he still freaks out if they use the stove or a knife. Needless to say they are way behind in any life skills. Just a year ago, the 13yr old was allowed to use the microwave by herself. Ridiculous.

9 year old before moving on to a real knife of any kind? What?! I’m a safety-minded person, but that’s ridiculous. Girl Scouts taught me how to use a Swiss Army knife at 8. The Boy Scouts May have learned sooner, I’m not sure. You’d be surprised what kids are capable of if they are properly taught. My great grandmother grew up in the Great Depression. She was peeling veggies and cooking on a soapbox for her younger siblings at 5. I would much rather teach my kids how to use a knife safely (if their motor skills are developed and if they show the interest) than only give them plastic knives until nine or ten, they get curious one day when I’m not looking and need stitches.

I was raised thinking knifes were for adults. My coordination is not good and I slip up a lot because I’m just now learning. I wish my parents made me learn sooner.

Hearing her say she treats and dresses them like adults makes me angry. If my mom said she dressed me as an adult as a small child that would make me so sad. We have our whole lives to be adults, don’t take away their childhoods, why rush them. And they should be using children knives they are babies.

I honestly didn’t see an issue with it because he obviously knows what he’s doing and handling a knife properly. The only concern I would have is that his little brother was too close and if he accidentally slipped he may have injured his brother that would be my only concern with the whole situation. He obviously has been taught properly and has been doing it more than this one time you can tell by the way he is walking everyone through what he’s doing that he does this on a regular basis so he knows what he’s doing and it’s up to his parents what they want their kids to do it when it’s none of no one else’s business honestly

If Spurgeon and Henry went to a Montessori Preschool this Fall, that'd be awesome...so his knife skills in light of that could be taken into consideration, ad if he's supervised it might be okay.

She is a good mom. He looked like he was being careful and was probably taught what to do many times. More people should teach their kids in a responsible way to do things for themselves and be a helper. And I'd much rather have a kid like this than a teen who can't make cereal for themselves

As for if this is safe or not, we don’t know, Spurgeon might have started using a plastic knife and moved up to this knife. I helped my mom in the kitchen at an early age. I thought he did a great job and Jessa was right there supervising him. I don’t see any issues.

Nobody knows the steps she’s taken prior to this video.. there’s 2 years old that can’t talk walk or to the things other 2 year olds can.. There’s things 3 year olds can do that 10 year olds literally can’t yet.. there’s no set age for certain things! There’s no rule book when it comes to kids. Clearly these kids have been helping for a while, they’ve always been advanced for their age.. so maybe for some they’re like omg I couldn’t imagine my child this age doing x y z. For others it’s opposite..

This teaching life skills from a young age is the entire premise of the Montessori method. People pay $2,500 a month to send their kids to a Montessori daycare. There is nothing wrong here. The kid is clearly doing really well with this and it's not like she's letting him run around with it. As far as using a smaller knife: he is using an appropriate sized tool for the job at hand. People need to chill. There is plenty to criticize about the Duggars, but this isn't one of those things.
