Jessa was not prepared for the emotions when she watched Encanto for the first time! And after the movie we get vulnerable for a bit about the pressure of living up to your family's dreams for you.

First, I love that Antonio, who has practically been raised by Mirabel, is the only one who really grasps her worth in the beginning. Her mom affirms her worth because Mirabel needs to hear it, but Antonio needs her because she’s her. Second, I kind of love that it sounds like Isabel is bragging about Bruno’s prophesy for her, when actually she thinks she got the only one that was flat out wrong. She was promised the life of her dreams, and instead she was living a life of unhappiness, that she can’t even complain about because that would seem ungrateful. I also think that Abuela needed to live at the end. When parents/grandparents die in Disney movies it’s because they need to impart some wisdom on the protagonists and then get out of the way. But in this movie, Abuela was the one who needed the wisdom. If she doesn’t get a chance to make good on that wisdom, then it’s a pointless death.

Maybe it's me, but I thought Bruno's prophecy for Isabella did come true. Bruno told Isa that the "life of her dreams was promised" and would someday be hers, not that she's currently living the life of her dreams. I think that Isa is on her way to fulfilling her prophecy at the end of the movie when she's no longer expected to marry Mariano and is being true to herself and broadening her world.

@@indestarbright9646 absolutely. Just When that song happens, her prophesy hasn’t yet come true. Everyone around her thinks it has. She’s upset because no one, not even Bruno with his gift, can see how unhappy she is. Turns out he can, but that’s not how she saw it.

Luisa is actually the middle child! On Pepa's side, it's Dolores(21), Camilo(15), and Antonio(5), and then on Julieta's side, it's Isabela(21), Luisa(19), and Mirabel(15). Isabela's older than Dolores and Camilo's older than Mirabel.

Right. I found that out too. Like the reason Julieta’s side of the family gets so much pressure from abuela has to do with the fact that julieta is the oldest of all the triplets. Also Bruno’s room wasn’t always like that. But as he started to feel alone and deserted his room started to reflect that feeling. Dolores room is also sound proof. From walls to window, so that is the only time she can get privacy and freedom.

@@cmoeller3 that is just the assumption we made. But when you search it up you find out that Luisa is the middle child while isabela the oldest. The song still applies only because Luisa is older than mirabel. So she technically is her big sister. But when you add Isabel into the mix, the song doesn’t apply because isabela is older. It is crazy because the writers never thought to even correct us which is kinda funny.

Something everyone seems to miss in this movie is the resentment Isabella feels toward Mirabel specifically. Luisa doesn't feel resentful about Mirabel because she just expects that her purpose is to carry everyone else. But, in Isabella's case, she feels like she has to be even better, because Mirabel isn't doing her part for the family. So she has to pull part of Mirabel's "weight" in the magical sense, while Luisa gets the other part. But again, Luisa doesn't really resent Mirabel for that because she would've done it anyway...that's what she thinks she's for. Isabella, on the other hand, felt like she needed to be even better, even more perfect, because Mirabel was such a failure (seemingly).
@tegoran
@tegoran 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's what it is. I think it's less that she's resentful and more that she's JEALOUS of Mirabel because she CAN fail and no one will think anything of it. Meanwhile, she is stuck always being perfect. It's a "Grass is always greener" scenario.
@dizzyMongoose
@dizzyMongoose 2 жыл бұрын
From what I've heard, the book about the movie establishes that Isabela's reason for disliking Mirabel has more to do with her believing their mom favors Mirabel the most, so the showboating is partly to get Mom's attention. And, as tegoran said, this also feeds into the feeling that Mirabel is allowed to make mistakes and still be loved, while Isabella has to do everything right to be praised. The movie I think was a little too subtle about filling out Isabella's issues; you really have to pay attention to notice that Abuela suppresses Isabella's imperfections, like her pulling out the one white flower in Isa's hair, or how Isa unconsciously parrots what Abuela says. This goes into one of the nitpicks I have with the movie, actually; it would've indeed been a lot clearer if they'd added some scenes with _Mirabel's_ family together where you see the parents interact with all the sisters and not just Mirabel alone. You see the cousin's side of the family all together, but the only time you really see Mirabel's family unit together is when they're taking pictures. It's made very clear how much Mirabel loves her family and how they relate to her, but the movie skimps on establishing the dynamics of the other family members with each other, particularly her immediate family unit.

Something else a lot of people miss is how Bruno's vision affected Isabella emotionally. Bruno said she'd have the life of her dreams and her power would grow. Of course Bruno does end up being right in the end but it took so long to become real that she probably gave up hope years ago and thought her current life was the best she could get and her flowers were the best her powers could do That she wasn't allowed to want more because her fate was sealed when her prophecy was read. In the reprisal of "We don't talk about Bruno" when she's dancing around Mirabel, she's very obviously sad even though we saw her smiling while singing about the vision earlier.

@@dizzyMongoose I kind of think they don't know how to deal with Mirabel. Starting with that horrible "not special/special gift" she got. I really related to Pepa. Not allowed to be sad or angry or worried at all, because she'll cause rain and that's bad so don't ever be sad "you have a cloud!" Push down those bad emotions and don't ever feel them. "Clear skies, clear skies!" only feel good and nice and happy. Don't be a burden, don't cause a storm. That same pressure is on all of the family members in different ways, all of them have to be something all the time they can't be all the time. Including abuela Alma. She too feels the pressure to keep everything in control, because she is the guardian of this miracle and everyone is looking at her and her family to save the community and her children.

I kept paying attention to the first timer's reactions, ESPECIALLY during the Luisa song, it hits us older siblings the hardest. My first time watching this I was listening to the song, it bopped, not gonna lie I was into it then the "drop drip drip" part had me like "whoa wait a minute, hey now you stop that". My girlfriend, who is an older sibling, straight up cried during that song particularly. My grandmother was the sweetest woman I ever met, it was my grandfather who was the toxic one, who always reminded his kids, and us grandchildren of all the sacrifices he had to make, how he dealt with racism, violence and segregation having grown up in the 1950's in Louisiana. And although my grandmother was a sweetheart, my aunt, her oldest sister was Abuela to a T, especially with us older children growing up. You toss in Christian fundamentalist Conservative values and I'm wondering how we all made it through that mess.

As a hispanic, grandson of mexican immigrants in a family rife with generational trauma related to the experience of being immigrants in a new country, this movie hit me in a place. When I was a kid my mother's side of the family (the immigrant side) was very much dealing with the same sort of generational trauma the madrigals had in this movie though we didn't have to deal with the death of the patriarch like the Madrigals did. I actually related to Mirabel and Luisa in that like Luisa i'm the oldest of all the grandkids in my family and I've carried a lot of responsibility due to that. I also relate to Mirabel because like her i'm also the oddball of the family as for a long time until my brother was born I was the only creative in the family. Also like Mirabel I love my family to death but I was also very very aware of the messed up shit that my family was dealing with and passing down via behavior. I don't know if I prefer this or Coco. Its very close but both movies get me crying big time.

I love the subtlety of how people tend to revert to younger versions of themselves when under extreme stress especially if they experienced any trauma....and in Camillo's case he literally transforms into a man with a child's head. 'Miirrraaabeeeell!' He always had to be everyone else and a class clown, now he was staring down at the prospect of having to just be himself. Not to mention Julietta losing her gift and immediately seeing a house drop on her daughter. Dolores being much more assertive without her gift. Feeling like she was being heard for the first time without her own words always having to be the gossip from around town.

Isabela was the most personally relatable character in the movie for me. I didn't have it nearly as bad as she did, but I understand the pressure to always be 'perfect,' especially with younger siblings who seemingly fall short. In keeping with the theme of communication and lack thereof, Mirabel and Isabela resent each other, each wanting what the other has. Mirabel feels locked outside the family, wants to help, and resents how the 'perfect golden child' Isabela gets all the attention. Isabela feels trapped in her role as the 'perfect golden child,' even going so far as marrying a man she didn't love. She sees how 'free' Mirabel is of responsibility, wants it for herself, and is angry that Mirabel can't see how 'good' she has it. I would really like for this movie to adapted to a series, so that there could be more exploration of the family's issues. The movie is great, don't get me wrong, but the nature of the medium means that things are wrapped up quickly.

Ok so first off, I will crush on Bruno to the end of times, I wouldn't even mind the rats. I think Pepa was redirecting the grief of losing a brother into anger because it's easier for her to handle, and managing her emotions is her whole life since her emotions literally goes out over those around her. And I think her family specifically has adopted "we don't talk about" attitude because the least they can do is keeping emotional triggers away from her. She was the first to hug Bruno once he returned, just saying. Also, when Tonito takes Mirabel's hand to lead her to her door, just like she had for him 😭

Here's some of my thoughts: - WOW, this was a great holiday stand-in for my weekly therapy sessions, holy moley - I watched it twice a day, without fail, over the holidays, so I get the need to watch Encanto multiple times just to get everything - my favorite and least favorite part (funny how that happens) is "Surface Pressure" - like, Luisa, babe, NEVER have I felt so SEEN, as someone with intense anxiety and depression mixed with generational trauma and being the oldest sibling, too. I can't even hear that song without crying, which sucks because it is a Grade-A bop! - Isabela, doesn't want to marry the village hunk but still goes through with pretending like she does for the family, who is extremely interested in growing plants other than the one kind of flower she'd been told to grow from the moment she got her powers (the inoffensively pretty kind), had my queer subtext-o-meter going nuts. So, I'm manifesting that Isa gets a girlfriend in the very well manifested Disney+ series. - I love how we're witnessing the maturation and growth of the songwriting power of Lin Manuel Miranda in this decade. Like, you can hear, in all of the songs, bits from "The Family Madrigal" to convey the theme of how everything that's happening is based around the foundation of the family. Miranda used this style of musical motifs as a major method of storytelling in Hamilton (there's a Howard Ho video all about that - I'd definitely recommend it, as it's fascinating), but not as consistently as in Encanto. I love that he's actively experimenting with all of these musical ideas in every project he takes on, and in every new project, I'm always like "Okay, this is his best song yet." First, it was "Yorktown," then it was "You Know Who You Are," now it's "Dos Oruguitas" - I only expect it to get better, as he does more! - I've been getting into the KZbin reviews of Encanto, and I saw an awesome video about going into a deep dive on Columbian culture by Jessica Flores - so check that out, as there are some amazing insights from her - and Jessica Darrow, the voice of Luisa, has a KZbin channel and is a musician (!). She has a jazz cover of "Surface Pressure" that SLAPS with Mike Elizondo on upright bass. Check it out at Jess305.

Great Reaction! I love this movie. Part of the genius of this is every child in it has relatable problems. So it doesn't matter if you are the 'unexceptional' youngest, the 'perfect' middle one, or the 'protector' oldest, this speaks to you. Other things I noticed, and love. Bruno is in the background of several shots. Dolores's section of We don't talk about bruno. Also when the lightning flashes during the engagement scene you can see his eye through the crack in the wall. Of all the squares on my Stuff disney made me cry over Bingo, I had no idea I would fill in "a song about two caterpillars". I also love the look on Alex's face when she found out about the translation. Alan Tudyk is the Tucan.... that is all. They had to fight to get Luisa having a bigger size, and is by far the most popular one. They also do a good job during her song showing her protective nature. She surfed an iceberg Maribelle then fixes her glasses. If you look at pictures of Isabella and young Grandma and Mirano and their Grandfather, they bear a strong resemblance to each other. That is why Abuela was pushing so hard for the marriage. so even Bruno's vision for Isabella was a bad vision. Antonio is the cutest. The only way to describe it is with that clip From Brooklyn Nine Nine by Stephanie Beatriz, "I have only known Antonio for a day and a half and if anything happens to him I will kill all of you then myself."

It's awesome cuz ppl don't realize that you can have a baby with skin and hair color than either parent, or a child of one caucasian parent and one black parent and the child can have light skin and blue eyes. Thank you for throwing in the little clip of David Tennant. So many people miss that little nod to 'Doctor Who', and the reference to 'Mission: Impossible' (This gift will self-destruct in 3...2...1...). Exaggerated expectations for children seems to be universal. My father was born and raised in Germany in the early 20th century. He was originally expected to become a doctor, and his younger brother was expected to become a priest (a remnant of the medieval practice of dedicating one child to the church as a monk or nun). Instead, both of them became automotive engineers. Fortunately, his parents were fine with that. Casita - which, according to Disney, is the embodiment of Abuelo Pedro - doesn't give Mirabel a Gift because it knows that she is destined for a more important role. She will become the guardian of the Magic once Abuela Alma dies. Notice that Abuela doesn't have a Gift, either, but she is custodian of the Gifts given to others, and they both have an affinity with Casita that the others don't seem to have. Unfortunately, she takes her role way too seriously, so that she loses sight of what's truly important. To be fair, her children and grandchildren don't know that full extent of the trauma she experienced, perhaps because she herself couldn't bear to relive it. The version told at the beginning to 5-year-old Mirabel is the sanitized version; we (and she) don't get the full story until the second telling during 'Dos Orugitas'. It's only then that Abuela and Mirabel truly understand each other. Lin-Manuel Miranda gives us a beautiful musical pun in 'We Don't Talk About Bruno'. In the second half, when the four main melodies are sung against each other, he's referencing a Renaissance song-form called a 'madrigal'!

When I first heard Luisa’s song, I flat out cried. I’m the youngest child. But my older siblings have severe mental issues and behavioral problems. They also were emotionally, verbally, and physically abusive. So while they were technically older, I always played the role of older sibling. I was the role model. I helped on their homework, made sure they didn’t get into too much trouble. It made me grow up too fast. And the stress and the trauma that they caused the family and my parents, made me feel like I had to be the one kid out of the four of us who wasn’t a disappointment. I felt like I had to be perfect, to make up for all that my siblings did. I got the perfect grades, did my chores on time without fail, never talked back, didn’t rebel or break any rules, and tried to be an “Easy” child. I know I put most of that pressure on yourself, but constantly hearing “that you for not causing us stress or for being more responsible than your sister” from your parents puts this psychological burden on your brain. I never felt like I could acknowledge any of the anxiety and depression I felt because I had to be the emotionally and mentally stable kid. I held it all in. Until I, like Luisa, cracked. I just had a nervous breakdown one day and wanted to die. Started seeing a therapist and got treated for the anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, and Autism that went unnoticed by the rest of my family. Things are much better now, especially since my siblings all moved out, but they moved out when I was almost an adult. So I never really got to be a kid, and now that I have the chance everyone expects me to act like an adult. Seeing and hearing someone acknowledge all the pain and fear I felt, even if it was in an animated song, made me feel seen and heard. I’m still a bit of a perfectionist and I still get afraid that people will compare me to my siblings, but I no longer wake up each day with dread or go to sleep at night wanting to not wake up. Sorry for the rant, just wanted to share how anyone, regardless of being the oldest, middle, or youngest can feel that pressure.

If you get a spot for another series, you really need to watch Arcane. 9 episodes, around 40 minutes apiece. Animation, writing, voice-acting...all absolutely excellent. Best thing from 2021 for sure, probably one of the best animated offerings of all time, and possibly one of the best shows of all time.

It is a beautiful story, I grew up watching star trek when I was a child and that shaped me into who I am today, so kids can pick up on these themes, I loved the video, thanks for foing it, be safe ❤

In the Hispanic culture, it’s very normal for family members to share rooms, so Antonio and Mirabel sharing a room in the beginning really wouldn’t be an issue.

What I find interesting is that no one has figured out that the reason that Maribel didn't get a gift right away is because the Miracle candle that gave all of the family members their gifts and brought the house alive was still Burning Bright and if you notice at the end of the movie the family members were singing that they notice how brightly Maribel burned like the candle and the uncle Bruno said that she's the true miracle and as soon as Maribel put the door knob on to the house the magic came back to the house bring it back alive and the family members got the gifts back which means that Maribel became the replacement of the magical candle that is maribel's true gift
@toddjackson3136

Right! The door wasn't fading and going away it was pulling through the doorknob into her. The magic provides for the family's needs but until Maribel it couldn't take care of their Mental Health.

When you said everyone in the family has crippling anxiety and "I wonder who's fault that is" I know the answer ppl have for this is Alma, but honestly, after much reflection... I think it's the people of the village. I mean they looked at a young mother of triplets whose husband was just hacked to pieces in front of her (in front of everyone) and they go "So...we know you're greiving and all, but we'd like you to be solely responsible for leading us going forward, because you have magic, k?" For me the evidence of this is when Señora Guzmán, one of the older villagers, probably among that original group, says "Luisa, can you move the piano?" 🙄 Like...no. This family does not exist just to make all of your lives easier. Especially when it is absolutely not mutual. We don't see any of the family members hanging out individually with friends from the village. Why? Because they have put the Madrigals up on this unrealistic pedistal and basically deified them. And yes, I get that everyone in that original group of internally displaced people suffered tremendous loses. So I certainly understand them being at a loss for what to do next and turning to the person who essentially created the Encanto for leadership and am not judging them for that. But a lot of people talk about Alma losing Pedro as if that was the sole source of her trauma and I just don't think so. I think more trauma came from living under the weight of so many expectations from her people and in turn passing those expectations on to her children. That's why the lines "What's that sound?" "I think it's everyone in town!" followed by the villagers singing, makes me cry all the time because it. is. about. time. For them to finally show support for this family that has supported them all for the past 50 years, that is a real catharsis 🙏🥰 My post-movie goal for the Madrigals is to see them form genuine friendships with some of the villagers rather than this one-sided arrangement they've had thus far 😂🥰 Thanks for enduring this random rant 🤣🥰🙏

The only family members we see interacting with lots of people in the village are Luisa and Mirabel
@TS-pl4tf

As an aside: Julieta is the golden child of the first generation and Isabela is the golden child of the second generation. While Luisa was seen the beast of burden, Dolores was Abuela's spy system. In Abuela's eyes, Camillo and Antonio had useless gifts while Mirabel had no gift at all, therefore Abuela saw the family gift as fading. A second aside: The first generation had gifts for: the Past, Present and Future. The second generation had gifts of: See no evil, Do no evil and Hear no evil. The last group of kids of the second generation had gifts of Growth, Change and Flexibility (Butterfly attributes): Put yourself in other the other person's place, Observe to learn, and Talk to animals, who may know more than humans (with which I agree). I think Abuelo Pedro was trying to get to Abuela Alma for a while and finally he had to cut off Mirabel from visible gifts completely with a amazing love her family and then give Antonio a gift so that she would be motivated to prove she could help the family. (Yes, I do enjoy watching your reactions multiple times.)

I don't think that Alma (the grandmother) "should have" died at the end. She was wrong, and like everyone else, she deserved a second chance. It took Mirabel to point out her faults, but she owned them, she learned from them, and she grew as a person. Everyone had to learn that they are more than just their gifts. Including Abuela - SHE is more than just her gift, as much as everyone else is more, and more fully dynamic than JUST their gifts. Alma deserves a chance for the learning curve that everyone else had.

Also when you said "I don't know why she says it like that. It's weirdly flirty and I'm like that's your sister." I've been waiting for someone to bring up the vague incestuousness throughout this movie 😂 this bit with Mirabel and Isabela, I didn't catch, but like... Bruno says that telenovela plot about a guy in love with his aunt and he says it to his niece, and then later in that sequence, he holds up that telenovela backdrop facing himself and then turns it around and holds it up to Mirabel's face 😂🤣 And then twice Camillo shapeshifts into Mariano and makes kissy faces at Isabela! 🤣😂

Their gives would be curses irl. Isabella is the golden child (she’s praised by everyone & told she’s perfect her whole life, though nothing’s perfect, and her family also plans out her life), Luisa is the sibling with the most responsibilities, Mirabel is the one that feels ignored (but in the movie, her gift is that she’s the glue to the family), Dolores is the one that either snoops or knows everything, Pepa is the emotional one, & Julieta is the mom

Personal headcanon. Since the Madrigal spouses are generally so complimentary to their partner, I think Antonio being such a quiet little man is destined to end up with "It's bigger on the inside!?" girl so he always has someone to remind the waiter for him that they ordered mashed potatoes and didn't get them.

Also about Mirabel's gift....she was the gift to the family. She 'looks' after the family. Plus 'Dos Oruguitas' does say it all. And she definitely got a door, no more sleeping in the nursery. My guess is that there no longer needs to be a nursery.

I wonder how many kids who were put into "gifted" programs in elementary school later found out they were no different than the rest of the kids who weren't "gifted?" A kid could peak at 6th grade and it's all downhill from there. How much more was expected of these kids? Was the family just sitting back waiting to see what you were going to do with your gifts? No pressure. I'm fine.

In fairness, when it comes to Mirabel sleeping in the nursery, they don't exactly have options? I mean, they could let her sleep in somebody else's room, but that's not really better. They can't tell her to *move out*, and they don't have control over the fact that she wasn't granted a magic bedroom.
