I lived on a small island in Hawaii when this hit theaters. Absolutely top notch job of respecting a culture while creating a brilliantly unique story.

There is a deleted scene where Lilo faced racism from American tourists who assumed she couldn't speak English. And she scared all the tourists into thinking a tsunami was coming with this siren noise and Bubbles wasn't quite happy with it

@@salliejones6002 most indigenous hawaiians don't like to be considered "american" as they are their own land and were colonized by the settlers who made up the idea of "america." most of them prefer to just be refered to as hawaiian, it is an illegal settlement after all.

@@salliejones6002 Legally, sure. They were forced to be. You might expect someone who was just living peacefully somewhere to see them as "the Americans" regardless of whether those Americans decided to tell them "we own you now" or not.

Nani saying the thing about this luau being fake is a reference to the fact that the whole ceremony was changed when American tourists started showing up to Hawaii

@@salliejones6002It is now; It used to be independent with its own monarchy, but ended up getting annexed by the US in 1898. That’s actually why the song Nani sings to Lilo exists. The Queen of Hawaii wrote/sang it for her people as a farewell song when Hawaii got annexed

That speech Stitch gives the Grand Councilwoman gets me every time: "This is my family. I found it all....on .... my own. It's little and broken, but still good. (looks back at Nani and Lilo) Yeah....still good." 🥺😭 Also, to answer a question on how David "spit" fire that I've seen a few times in other reactions: Fire dancers drink (but most importantly, don't swallow) either straight alcohol, kerosene or paraffin lamp oil from a bottle and spit it out onto the flame to make it erupt, so that's most likely what he used.

the original ending for this involved Stitch hijacking an aircraft to chase the spaceship and rescue Lilo, flying through populated areas. and THEN 9/11 happened...

The Florida animation studio came out with some magic while they were around (Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, and the less-beloved-yet-still-fun Brother Bear). Interesting how they were able to organically produce original stories all centered around non-white characters when the business machine wasn’t breathing down their necks. And in the late 90’s & early 2000’s, no less! It was nice while it was around.

One of my favorite Disney movies. Stitch's line at the end about the family he found - "It's little, and broken, but still good. Yeah. Still good." - always hits me in the feels. Highly recommend taking a few minutes to watch the trailers for this (easy to find on KZbin). They also were very unusual and creative.

23:44 - I'll be "That Guy" today. Nani is singing "Aloha 'Oe" ("Farewell to thee"), a famous Hawaiian folk song by Liliʻuokalani, the Princess of Hawaii at the time. It's meant to be a farewell song at a time when the island was being colonized and she embraced her little sister and sang this song. (Some of the details are in dispute, though, but this is the most popular retelling of the story I've heard.) So, this scene is very much a nod to that story, as Nani is embracing Lilo and saying goodbye as she knows that she'll be taken away.

I worked on the DVD special features. It was the first Disney DVD where they stopped crediting the individual people and just the company names. We split it with another company. I loved this. Lilo is voiced by the girl from The Ring. She is replaced by Dakota Fanning for the sequel. The commentary track was nearly impossible to record. The writer/directors kept making fart noises. They also told a really funny story about trying out the electronic dog collars/fence thing but was not DVD appropriate.

I had a similar situation with my own little sister for a while and it was exaughsting. Being a mom instead of a sister is so hard and unfair, especially when youve both lived as sisters who get to fight and play. I was 11, my sister was 7. It was very hard and lonely and thats why we adore this movie and Frozen, we adore sister stories we relate too❤

David best male lead that was not in the focus of the movie! We should all seek for a David in our lives LOL! Rewatching this as an adult made me appreciate this more. I remember when I was a kid, kinda hating Lilo for being a pain for Nani, and that their sisterly relationship is kinda toxic, because you know, that's not what majority of the cartoons show. It was always about perfect families, so rewatching this after going through some of the hardships myself, made me appreciate it more. During the sad moments I tear up when I was a kid, but as an adult, I now cry cause of a deeper understanding of this film. This was honestly one of my favorite films growing up without me knowing what made me really like it, now I know why.

Lilo taking pictures of tourists is not just Lilo being weird, she is a native hawaiian, so tourists take her picture all the time, I think is a coping mechanism.

2d/cel animation is so much better for cartoons; for f/x monsters or space movies and so forth, CGI is amazing. But it just doesn't carry the emotion, the heart, the joy that we get from watching cartoons of all kinds. Nani does make a serious mistake, well-intentioned as she is: when David showed up with the job opportunity, she should have taken Lilo with her - after all, Nani took her to her other job interviews - though they didn't go well. I think Agent Bubbles immediately recognized Stitch for what he was, and that was part of the reason he kept such close track of the family.
