I had read that men in that area at that time carried knives under their arms in shoulder holsters similar to modern day handgun shoulder holster carry. Any quillons or cross guards would snag the draw. I also read that cross guards only appeared on "Bowie" knives when Sheffield of England began mass manufacturing knives for the American frontier.

If you ever get a chance, if not already been, you would enjoy visiting Old Washington Arkansas where the James Black design was made for James Bowie. The James Black design was where Bowie acquired the modern double edge, sharpened back clip, with crusadas to trap a saber sword or sword cane blade. Your reproduction of James Bowie's first knife, given him by Rezin Bowie, is a very nice historically accurate reproduction. Thanks for sharing.

Actually, Jim Bowie’s brother,Resin, said that the knife was made to be a hunting knife and served in that role for many years. After Jim was shot, he told Rezin he intended to carry a knife to defend himself. Resin then gave the knife to Jim. Resin tells the story and gives the exact description ( which is exactly what you cited here in this video). Resin tells this story in a newspaper interview shortly after the sandbar fight so it is the best eyewitness testimony. I would also note that it looks much like the knife Jim gave to Edwin Forrest just after the fight but the “Forrest Bowie knife “ is a little longer at 12”. Your knife is indeed the best reproduction of the original Bowie knife I have seen. I don’t know why a company does not reproduce this knife.
@turtlewolfpack60612 жыл бұрын
From my limited research it almost seems that the massive clip point knives that later became known as bowie knives predated Jim Bowies fame by several years and were pretty popular in some areas of Mexico. Of course massive clip points do go back even further to medieval Germany in the many blades that they made to bypass sword laws. It is interesting that no Bowie may have actually invented the modern bowie knife.
@DeepSouthExperience2 жыл бұрын
I believe the clip point was introduced by James Black who gave the Bowie's the option of the clip point after seeing knives from Sheffield, England. I did not know that they also were previously used by the Spanish. You can do a lot of research on this subject and never learn it all. Thank you very much for your input and taking the time to watch and comment on the video. All the best - Stan

That is a really nice knife. I love the dimensions. That shape is not only good for defense, but would be a great woods knfe, even chores..Although there are descriptions and accounts of bowies knife,nobody really knows what that original bowie knife looked like. On top of that, the knife had to have features that made it stand out from other knives of that era, clip point, etc.. If not, it would have never gained the traction it did. I dont mean fancy sheffield style looking either, I agree would be more like yours. There were plenty of violent knife fights at that time and nobody took such notice of the knives used. Very nice knife, I remember reading somewhere that J Bowie may have had as many as 17 different knives made for him in his lifetime between the Sandbar fight and his death at the Alamo in 1836 all of which came to be known as "Bowie Knives", although some of them technically weren't. For me it's a fascinating bit of history of knives that may or may not have had a Bowie/James Black connection ranging from the Fowler Bowie in San Antonio which is kept at the Alamo to others like the Musso Bowie and 'Bowie No 1' both kept in Arkansas to the Seguin Bowie (which was supposedly given to Juan Seguin of the Alamo fame by Rizen Bowie sometime after J Bowie's death.) Bowie Knives have always had a combo of fact and myth making in their history which is something I kind of love about them. Another great KZbinvideo on the evolution of the Bowie by the way is 'Bowie Knives 1820-1870'.

Yes, I have read the same thing. From what I learned they evolved over the years until ultimately it became what is known as the Alamo Knife. Beautiful knife. A guy could probably make a gig out of reproducing it for sale. I prefer a huge "Bowie" knife with the clipped point for everyday use. Mine is 1075 high carbon, 15.50" long, 10" cutting edge, 1/4" thick. I buy them blank and make my own leather sheaths and leather scales for them. I say, 'them' because as soon as I've built one, someone sees it and wants to buy it. So I sell it and make another one and... so on and so on. I, too have my doubts about Bowie having anything to do with building these huge clipped point beasts. But I love the knife anyway. Won't do without one. But I don't call it a "Bowie knife". I call it a BFK (big fuckin' knife). Because that's just what it is.

Stan you will really love this if you have not seen it already. Note how many of these Bowies have spear or semi-clipped points, not clip points. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZinfYOKdqyqY80

SUFFICIENT SURVIVAL Thanks Chad. The James Black knife is my next goal, but that will take some saving.

I'd say that one cost a pretty penny!

It wasn't cheap by no means, but it was not bad for a hand forged custom blade. Darrell was quite fair with his pricing.
