Jesse didnt teach wing chun, he taught his method of what he called non classical gung fu... his footwork was based on his judo background and his application of chi sao used forward pressure. He also understood the reality of reflex lag, which very few people take into consideration and the need to have a method of training where you are simultaneously attacking and defending against a resisting opponent. Certain aspects of wing chun was used to accomplish this but Jesse never said he did or taught wing chun and none of his students would ever claim they did either. There is some pretty bad wing chun out there but to say it sucks is naive. A good wing chun man is a good fighter plain and simple...

Wtf! Why is the word "Refining Wing Chun" such a major problem? U must be simple and direct in real combat. Why do 3 different movements to get from point A to point B...When I can develop a way to get there in 1 move? If I don't "have to" Chi Sao or trap to get pass my opponent's arms...I won't! That is what "refining" is...To simplify without losing it's original intention or purpose. Everyone who has a job, has a supervisor who instructs us on how to do such job step by step, but what do we do?... Try to find a quicker and easier way to do the work, while still producing the same results. We refine most things we do on a daily basis...So martial arts should be no different.
@malcolmwilliams32968 жыл бұрын
+Trevan Powell Chi Sao is to train sensitivity you won't actually use it in fighting... of course if you have a direct way to get there you do but what say you throw a jab and it gets parried you have to change movements to get your punch to the face of wherever, your single effective attack just became a number of movements... I'm just saying

+Malcolm Williams I'm not talking about actual combat where fighting is unpredictable. Nor am I rejecting the ideal of continual movement. Im only speaking in training for fighting. I've seen real life martial artist waste a lot of energy, trying to fight in their traditional ways on the streets. Only after stripping the art down to it's essentials, then they started taking out their opponents in seconds. Tommy Carruthers did an excellent video on "unrealistic blocking" in street fighting, proving this point

Obviously you have eyes and don't see because one has to be blind not to see WC in all his movies. So, yes he was practicing WC until he died. When he was filming Enter the Dragon "his last movie in case you did not see it" one of his fight consultant was a friend, mentor and teacher from whom he learned WC while a student in Hong Kong. In fact they had a friendly sparring match were Sifu Lee won the kicking game, but could not match the inside game of his WC mentor, and chose to move outside creating distance so he could kick. During this same trip to HK he made an effort to get a video copy of GM Ip Man completing the WC Dummy form, but could not. The question then is: Why would Sifu Lee bring in a WC Master to help with his fight sequence in Enter The Dragon, and why would he attempt to learn the WC Dummy form if he had trashed the system.
@9usuck03 жыл бұрын
Bruce didn't "trash" anything. He took his WC and wanted to explain it, which is what you do with martial arts. A lot of what Bruce used was WC. I think most people who teach it are trash, but the art isn't and Bruce didn't think so either.

How can you refine wing chun when you don't even know ALL of wing chun, Jesse? Answer me that! If you learned REAL wing chun, you wouldn't have to refine it, it would already BE refined. You shouldn't be teaching wing chun, you are teaching it incorrectly. If you learned it from Lee, then you don't know what you are doing in wing chun. Bruce Lee only knew 2/3rds of the MODIFIED system, which is missing key elements that make it work properly, like proper footwork (the circle inside the triangle), the proper way to close the distance, using an ANGLED step, also, using the concepts of "Welcome what comes in, escort what goes out, and attack when contact is broken", which is the way of wing chun (sorry Dominick, but I think you don't know this either). This allows you to stick with your opponent, CONTROLLING his every move, instead of just overpowering him, which isn't the correct way to do wing chun.

All of the individuals that claim a secret knowledge of Wing Chun or claim that you need to know "all" of Wing Chun to be effective are simple minded and delusional. Which Wing Chun? Wing Chun was vast and varied and designed to adapt to the opponent and the student. It was always about refining the tools it encountered for fighting and only a few well refined tools are required to become a good fighter. The "Grandmaster" William Cheung devotees are the worst trolls of this argument. I like Sifu William Cheung but he created this story to give himself more credit in an era when people were more easily fooled by these things. He definitely was a fighter and a good martial artist but stories like his were the common thing a few decades ago in the Martial Art world. Also, he himself stated that Bruce Lee was good at Wing Chun and that he was and incomparable fighter during his life, calling him "The best fighter in the world" and "greatest martial artist" meaning....better than William Cheung including his "true" style. I am surprised that his promo trolls like this gentleman keep forgetting that. Bruce Lee was one of only a small group of these guys who could actually DO what he claimed while all of the "grandmasters" were content to simply talk and theorize, because it is much harder to do the work and train every part of your body to reach a high level of skill and athleticism required to fight against other highly skilled fighters. It is quite easier to Talk about it. Even Wong Shun Leung, who was Bruce Lee's senior under Yip Man and the one Yip Man most trusted to help Bruce continue practicing after all of the jealous "senior students" had Bruce kicked out for beating them down, said that Bruce did what Wing Chun was designed to do, adapt and change with the individual. Wong was the actual fighter that most represented Wing Chun and even William agreed with his story that Bruce was kicked out because after six months he was beating the seniors of the art. At that time he obviously knew even less of the system.Therefore the arm chair trolls arise to Talk about fighting and recite legend or theory and always result to the "but you only know two thirds or one fifth" or any other ridiculous "My Sifu knows the only real Wing Chun" ..."Traditional Wing Chun" argument. Look at the level of skill coming from MMA these days and they are just in the beginning stages of implementing what Bruce Lee was saying, proving and teaching in the sixties. Wing Chun tools are all over the mma world now, the low kicks, the elbows, even the trapping and punching work is there, it is just not being called "Wing Chun. Jon Jones and Anderson Silva as well as Connor McGregor are prime examples of fighters employing some of the tools and strategies of the art, with Anderson Silva actually training with Bruce Lee's friend, student and legend in his own right, Sifu Dan Inosanto. The entire system of Muay Thai or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are not being used either to win against highly skilled opponents. It is the refined applications of these methods along with high level attributes And lots of experience that is leading to success and not the knowledge of "All of the system" and in most cases, less than "two thirds" of any of the arts are being used at any time. Stop crying about things that do not matter and start training. It is these Talkers and poor representatives of Wing Chun that are bringing down the quality and effectiveness of an otherwise simple, direct and effective fighting art. Stop trying to LOOK like you are a Wing Chun man and start Doing it effectively. When it is effective how it looks will be a delight....

taking down keyboard warriors. Great comment and I agree wholeheartedly. I think in the case of William Cheung, that he is a good martial artist and was most likely a good fighter back in his teenage days against the type of teen fighters that Hong Kong had in the 1950's. However, although he created very good modifications to WC...that he claims those were part of a Traditional system of the authentic/original WC and were kept secret etc, etc...just really rubs me the wrong way and is not respectable at all. It's disgraceful to try and pass things off as something they are not. It tarnishes him and that's too bad because he has his own brand of genius in what he modified from the original WC ( which he labels as a " modified " system) and should have stayed honest and kept his method as what he called them in the early and mid 1980's which was " Cheung's Wing Chun ". That label is honest and accurate. Yet he suddenly, magically self labeled himself as Grandmaster at some point..in Australia years ago, and his idea worked...people came flocking and it was a financial increase for him to the point that he has 50 or 70 or whatever number of schools around the world now and is wealthy due to it. The problem is, it all sits on a lie. That moral failure makes it hard to have any respect for Mr. Cheung. I wish he had stayed honest and not let his ego and/or hunger for fame or dollars, overtake his ethics. In the end, by the late 60's and till his death, I am sure Lee was a superior fighter to Cheung. Wong Shun Leung had a spar with Lee in Hong Kong at Lee's home in around 1972 and though it was not an all out fight, Lee bested and battered Wong. Wong's student who accompanied him to Lee's home and witnessed the two sparring has admitted that Lee bested Wong and that if it had been a real fight and Lee was using his full power...that one blow of Lee's would have crushed Wong and sent him down. He stated too that when he and Wong returned to Wong's home, that Wong removed his long sleeve shirt in pain and his arms were totally black and blue from Lee's attacks. I believe Cheung and Wong were of very similar fighting level...and that Lee would have similarly bested Cheung.
