'After all those stories about Hitler and his snub, I came back to my native country and I couldn't ride in the front of the bus,' Owens recalled. 'I had to go to the back door. I couldn't live where I wanted. Now what's the difference?' - Jesse Owens

@Spec0pleader In fact Owens and Hitler did shake hands: “The predominating opinion in post-war Germany was that Hitler had ignored Owens. We therefore decided not to report on the photo. The consensus was that Hitler had to continue to be painted in a bad light in relation to Owens.” quote wikipedia

@skeilak It does clear the sinuses, you should only whisk a small branch in the hot water for a minute or so, and the tea shoud be a strong blend and can be sweetened with condensed milk from a can. This is only for camping or working outside and you drink it in enamel cups, about a pint in each, not very genteel, but delicious in the bush.

What most people don't know is that Hitler never refused to greet Ownes, they exchanged waves out of respect (Jessies achievements and Germanys welcome). He said he was treated better in Germany that he ever was in the US. It was in fact FDR that ignored him. He never recieved any telegrams or friendly gestures at post olympic events. While in Germany he was treated with honor. After smashing records he had to use the service elevator rather than the front door for a celebratory event in the US.

Jesse Owens returned from the Olympics on the Queen Mary, a national hero.. His wife Ruth Owens and his parents took a tugboat 12 miles out to join him before he docked in New York City. He was greeted by the great boxer Jack Dempsey and Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, and there was a ticker-tape parade. During the parade, someone handed Owens a paper bag containing $10,000 in cash.

For what it is worth, I cannot find record of any 1936 US Olympic athletes meeting with FDR. I did come across a photo of Harry S Truman hosting several 1948 US Olympic athletes of African descent in October of that year. You like Harry?
