The director of someone like you said that he was fine with Hugh Jackman using his natural aussie accent but the producers felt that it might not connect with American audiences. I don't know if those opinions are still today,. I have heard from actors that are not American that alot of the time Americans don't understand what they are saying and have to speak with an American accent.
