Actually this death of Apollo was the reason Rocky could win. Kolov wanted an exhibition bout of Drago vs Rocky but Rocky will lose because he didn't know how hard he needed to train and didn't know how strong this man was. Likely he would probably die like Apollo too in the match. Apollo's death taught Rocky that his opponent was not your average Joe and also ignited a spirit ready to avenge Apollo. All this made him go into insanity mode when it came to training and hence be able to take Drago on and win, withstanding all his overpowered punches and knocking him out. Apollo's fight was Rocky's advantage overall...

Well in all honesty, I don't think Rocky was ever underestimating Drago in this film! Even at the press conference, Rocky jokingly made out that Apollo had a tall order up ahead with the "ladder" comment! If Rocky had fought him first, I think he would have lost like you said, but that it would've happened in maybe 4-6 rounds, with Rocky surviving, due to not knowing just how much of a killer he was. That would've possibly led to Rocky retiring and living out his years in luxury without brain damage, Apollo realizing fighting Drago was foolish, and maybe starting up a boxing school/gym alongside Rocky. But alas, it wasn't to be. ;(

I think one of the reason Drago does not speak much is probably because he's not fluent in English as you can see when he made his victory speech. I notice in this scene that Rocky looks uncomfortable like deep down, he knows that letting Apollo fight Drago at his age was unwise but he had no idea how bad it was going to turn out until it was too late. Of course, if it was a real-life boxing match, Drago would have been disqualified and probably charged with murder because he kept hitting Apollo even when he was told by the referee to stop so Rocky throwing in the towel would have made no difference.

Usually that's a point against you, but let's not act like it always gets enforced in real life. There have been deaths in the ring before, and no one to my knowledge has ever even been charged w/ murder. But you'd probably get suspended for like a yr if you got off late hits that resulted in your opponent dying. From the movie perspective, I think Drago was really hell-bent on teaching both Apollo & the crowd a lesson they'd not soon forget, for all the pre-fight disrespect to the extremes. I don't think he thought he'd kill him, but was happy when he realized he may have done just that. There's no question he meant to hurt him as bad as he possibly could, as evidenced by the hits after the whistle.

However this mistake was not repeated in "Rocky Balboa". Realisticaly Dixon should have wiped the floor with Rocky, so it was a great idea to make Dixon injure his hand early in the fight. This way Rocky being able to keep up with him was much more believable.

It's a funny thing, the grass is always greener on the other side. Your comment reminded of that. As a short guy, I used to think that everyone who was tall was super happy and comfy with it, because I only looked at it from my own shortcomings(pun intended). So I once put a really tall guy quite on the spot in public once, commenting on his height. And I really honest to God meant it 100% as a compliment! Like, "Look at this hunk!", not my exact words but that was what I was going for. To me it was just one damn handsome man! Because I was too self absorbed to view it in any other way than he having what I lacked. He ended up being quite hurt by it actually, he became visibly uncomfortable in an almost social anxiety kind of way, and _then_ it dawned on me what I had done:/ Because from his perspective he probably felt like a freak, almost "unnatural"(he was probably well beyond 200 cm) and always sticking out in any crowd. So he probably wished he was short sometimes and could just disappear amongst the others. He has probably never ever in his life experienced to "blend in", anywhere! At least not since puberty. Imagine that. You often see the same mistake being done by "fat" people, towards "skinny" people. Fat people often think it's a safe compliment to point out other peoples skinniness. Because they become blinded by all that focus on how it's bad and gross or whatever to be fat, that it's easy to think that everyone who is skinny must be very happy with it. But of course, that is not the case. And the same mechanic is true between people who are stereotypically "ugly" towards the stereotypically "pretty". *And just to take it one step further, this reversed discrimination(intentional or not) **_ALSO_** actually happens towards rich people.* Because the stereotype or "norm" is that poor is bad and rich is good. However, I actually know two people who are quite rich, or rather their parents are rich. I got quite close with one of them, and one time I was driving her home from school and it turned she lived in the richest part of our city. And me, coming from a part that is more lower-middle thought it was quite exciting and cool! Like, "Wow, you live here!? That is so awesome!" *She **_literally_** shrunk in size before me and asked me to promise not tell others at school!* That was so strange to me, being used to the "shame" of coming from a shabby part of the town. Again I was too self absorbed to consider all the shitty stereotypes that exists about rich people too, especially towards kids of rich people. The jealously, and the suspicions that they have had the easiest life, having everything handed to them on a silver platter etc, nothing in their life is earned because it's all daddy's money and bla bla bla.
