When James Brown, and all the dancers, and the big bull head with Apollo dressed as Uncle Sam happened, only then did Drago tell himself "Alright, I'm gonna kill this guy."

I agree with David Goren. I think the initial plan for Drago and his team was to fight and destroy/kill Rocky during the exhibition bout. Rocky was already heavyweight champion so what better way to make a mockery and get America's attention than to take down the head/#1 boxer. Remember, this movie was set during the Cold War and there was much beef about what country had the better athletes in the different sports. I believe had Rocky fought Drago initially he would've met Apollo's same fate (without the death, of course, but still badly hurt.) It was the underestimation along with the 5 year layoff that caused Apollo's death, which in turn, made Rocky work that much harder during the workouts and ultimately led to his victory.

Apollo’s pride killed him. Even if Rocky’s stopped the fight Apollo probably would have killed Himself because he has no more respect or dignity. Rocky felt responsible for Apollo’s death. When Apollo looks at his wife before the second round it was like a final goodbye.

I just noticed at 6:44 where Drago subtly locks eyes with Rocky and shakes his head with no malice or mocking in his stare. It adds a completely new dimension to this scene. Drago was trying to warn Rocky that he needed to end the fight, because it was his "mission" to destroy his opponent. And then having that scene immediately followed by Drago's 'wife' taking a drag off the Party apparatchik's cigarette.

Apollo put Rocky in a difficult position by insisting that he not end the fight even though it was obvious by now he could not win because Drago was younger and stronger then he was. In the end, it was Apollo's pride that really killed him. If Rocky ended the fight, he would have saved his friend's life but chose to honor his wish to keep it going even if it killed him. I think Rocky felt responsible for Apollo's death.

Dolph lundgren played the original Punisher, Ivan Drago, and the antagonist Universal Soldier, 3 big roles all from over 20/30 years ago that are still remembered today. Not bad for an actor who never completely “made it” in Hollywood. The original Punisher is almost never on tv, and it’s always a treat when I get to see it, a great movie from my childhood.

Right he didn't kill him so continuing to fight after the round ends and throwing the ref after he tries to call it is Apollo's fault. Plus it's an exhibition not a real fight it's for charity so it doesn't matter who wins it won't go down as a win nor loss on one's record. The only boxer who really took exhibitions seriously was Tyson and even than it still doesn't matter because it doesn't go on ones record.

Apollo was way outmatched, and was playing with death, even after getting beaten to a pulp in the first round, he had a chance to escape with his life, he stubbornly wanted to continue, so he asked to be killed- Drago would claim he was just doing a professional job, and wanted to end his boxing career.

What makes this scene likely the most epic in all of the Rocky films (or sports films in general) was the buildup that started even with the film's marketing. For the one or two trailers (that weren't heavily publicized), Ivan Drago has minimal dialogue. From the beginning of the film until this scene, Drago's character is mysterious. He hasn't said a word. He's this towering presence who is given just enough backstory to keep him mysterious and yet show some of his potential (like in the press conference when Apollo's in that pool and his punching strength test). Dolph Lundgren was an unknown and pretty much no audience knew who this guy was when he appears in this film. Imo, that was a fantastic angle Mr. Stallone took with this Drago character. Throughout the film, the audience is left to wonder who is this Russian and how does his punching strength translate in a real match. Mr. Stallone did a phenomenal job building up the hype until it culminates and explodes in this one emotional and powerful scene. When you hear Drago's first words at 4:30, "You will lose" and you see the looks on Apollo's and Rocky's faces, you feel the tension ramp up to 20. You were pretty much on the edge of your seat from that moment until the end of the film.

In the beginning when Apollo made his entrance, I noticed a look of humility on Drago's face, as if he knew what he was ordered to do. Kill his opponent for the loyalty to his country and a team. It's a look of sadness... I didnt notice it till now, but great detail in the film production.

Drago went from "you will lose "... to "I must break you"... lol he knew the dynamic of fighting class had changed... Easy to think highly of yourselves when challenging a poorly trained, long in the tooth fighter whose heart had already been retired and woefully overshadowed with Vibrato. - He knew Rocky would be something he'd have to break down to triumph over, and he didn't. His in ring tactics of intimidation and using brute barbaric strength to strike fear in the heart of you're opponents wouldn't work cuz this was no ordinary opponent - another cruel irony revelation is that the same westernized adaptation to fame and clout that allowed Rocky to become complacent and lose to Clubber Lang (Mr. T) the first bout, when Apollo's training and friendship had awoken him back to his original roots and inspired him to tap into and focus on iron clad strategy, is what caused Apollos demise with the Russian. Showboating. Gaslighting. Under estimating your opponent cuz their a "black or a Russian" , soaking in the artifical glory of the limelight , though all the while your opponent is on the other side of the world training classically and seriously cuz they ain't playing with you about the fundamental of the sport and that they competing for the gold. - The same complacency of the limelight and greed is what disbanded Rocky and Tommy as brothers in the 5th one. Phew !!!!

This is like the sad😢 part of the movie. Apollo was dancing his last dance & spoke to his friend Rocky. I was supposed about what will happen NEXT in the Boxing Ring.
