The last point can relate to the ego in sparring.when sparing with someone in a lower skill level using them as cannon fodder or when fighting a superior skilled person attempting to go hard to prove ourselves superior. Sparring is a learning opportunity.

Awesome teaching, Enkamp Bros! Love how you are combining your knowledge for us. That video was really on point. My biggest problem in sparring: how to deal with steamrollers (heavier - and fast - opponents)? Cheers from Australia!
@purplelibraryguy87294 жыл бұрын
Probably want to do a lot of lateral movement. You can't keep backing up, and trying to match them is playing their game. Circle and counter. Yes, well, easier said than done I expect.
@julienjoelclement4 жыл бұрын
@@purplelibraryguy8729 yes easier said than done indeed, haha ;-) You're right, it takes a lot of lateral evasions and counter-strikes from there... whenever I'm fast enough! As for matching them, yeah, nah. Cheers!

Luv this vid. I am a karateka exploring MMA making this video really helpful. The "pivot out" explains the movement drills our stand-up instructor has us do. Biggest problem in sparring thus far? I'm the worst at sparring in my academy. I always get pounded, psyched out, etc. Goal for awhile has been to score one point. (Yes, it's that bad!) Thanks for the video. These look like things I can practice shadow boxing so hopefully after lockdown I'll be in a position to achieve my big goal. Love your instruction, attitude, and approach to teaching.

Many times I have been doing sparring at my karate dojo, protecting my chin just as Oliver explains, and my sparring partner or even the sensei comments "this is not box". I don´t know if it is common to seen in karate dojos that protecting your face is not trainned, or it´s just my dojo. It seems to me like a big issue to seen sparring with a lack of footwork, head movement and protection of the face. Cheers!
@xshadowscreamx4 жыл бұрын
Trevelyan999 that dojo might be too traditional.
@alafosca57244 жыл бұрын
When it comes to traditional karate sparring, it's a given that they'll try to teach you the competitive karate fighting, unless it's Goju Ryu or some other okinawan/older form, or unless it's not traditional karate. In traditional competitive karate everything goes to a point and you can't hit hard, so the focus is on distance, timing, in and out speed, and precision. It's very unfortunate that they limit themselves and us karate practicioners with such limiting rules... You can still learn useful things, and then move on to something else on your own or as a secundary martial art. What I find a shame is how karate got stuck on outdated rules when, if you look at okinawan/chinese roots of karate, the katas are full of combat applications that can't be displayed under these rules. Ironically, through Muay Thai you can put in practice much of what TRUE karate had in stock, even though most karate techniques are thought to be used in reaction for self defense.

Awesome! When I went from Karate to Full-Contact-Kickboxing I made often the first mistake, it took a while for me to "forget" the typical Karate-Punching and adapt the head movement or shoulder protection during striking. But I always use a exit strategy, like rolling out and Roundhouse to the body or head, something I learned during my Karate-Time :D

Great channel!! I have a comment about sparring vs tournament. A problem with sparring is that students get used to using soft touches and when they go for tournaments, they’re not used to using full power or they run out of stamina. Same goes for getting hit. They’re not conditioned to receiving solid hits. Also, some kicks or punches won't work properly without applying some strength or speed.
