In wrestling, we learned "the shelf" after doing a single leg takedown, then a leg sweep, or a lift and pull of the leg. I love the complexities of martial arts.

I literally bought blinding equipment to deal with pack of stray dogs. Works like a charm, one shot and no dogs around. Your pepper spray not so much. Dog still keep try to attack you despite the pepper spray. Flashlight don't work at such distance. In advertisement they say it works on bears also.

I spent over a dozen years at an ATA, (what I now consider a McDojo), and quit a month away from my third degree black belt. The shool taught me a lot of great self defence and muscle memory is still with me with many aspects. The wrestling I did later taught me how to be mean when you have to and how to be scrappy. Each school of thought has many benefits.

Wow..This guy is awesome and an example how powerful well trained techniques can be, especially in a knife fight. i highly doubt the he would get cut or injured in a real knife fight. Lets say with an average attacker with no special knife skills, the fight would be over in seconds!

I thwarted an attempted murder by knife, simply by being absurdly obese. The dude knew i was also strong and wouldnt get enough stabs in the right place if it came down to an engagement. So then he tried to make a female bystander do it, which she lied agreeing to. After all that went down the toilet, he tried shoving me out a window, but the fat thing again. So finally he decided to try bashing me with a dense wood chair. That also didnt work, though not sure why on that one. In the end, i diffused the situation nonviolently. Im not saying being fat is a good thing, but i happened to experience a benefit of it when it really counted.

There’s this cool knife defense training video that I watched years ago, it was called “Die Less Often.” Because even if your technique on knife defense is perfect, you still only increase your probabilities of not dying (hence die less often). I remember laughing, because they kept doing live drills with a rubber knife, and the instructor would often interrupt saying “Ok time out, it’s over, you died.” I’m sure the video is still out there. I remember it also involved defending in a way that if you did take any cuts, it would be to the outside of your forearm instead of the inside (because you’ll bleed out if sliced up to the inside).
