great video, but auxiliary question... how did you finally address high end distortion? i have a collection of decent ribbon mics but I feel like I'm struggling with the same issue.

For me the issue was cheap condenser mics with cheap capsules that didn't handle high frequencies well. Assuming the ribbons are in good shape, you shouldn't have much trouble with high end distortion with a ribbon mic, so it might be more about the mix. Comparing to good reference mixes helped me learn to hear smooth high end, while I had been making everything dark out of fear of harshness. I had more issues with high end sounding harsh when there was very little going on above maybe 6k-8k, leaving all that nasty 2k-6k stuff being the most forward high end. Happy to take a listen if you've got an example of what you're dealing with.

@@jessegimbel i may take you up on that. im thinking, much like you said, that there's not enough being captured in that range to mask any noise in that range. like a bad (frequency band specific) SNR.
