Not specifically the choices of cards for the format but rather what types of main deck cards you usually side out (ex. extenders, traps, handtraps) depending on expecting to go first or second. And also how you side for a game 3 as opposed to game 2 if it goes to the tie breaker. Thanks for the educational vids

@@j13bmxer what i can recommend ist learning siding patterns. If you feel like its slowing u down, write down siding patterns against the most common meta decks. You choose the contents of your side for a reason. Then u just have to hard learn what to side for which deck encounter. If you face a deck you didnt prepare for, ask yourself, which deck is it most similar to from the ones i did repare for. Chances are the siding pattern will match. Hope this helps you out

I looooooved this. Something people don't really talk about and is probably the most important thing in the game: deckbuilding with reasoning. I use the prop calc all the time because it is useful information that if you don't know, nobody is going to tell you.

I love that top tier players are making this type of educational content. The game has a very high barrier of entry and having well renouned players teaching how their mindset or thought process it makes it a lot easier for new/bad/existing players to get better, which will help the community grow! Only tip is probably don't start episode 1 with 10 minutes of math, people can't be asked to read a single sentence, let alone look at a spreadsheet lmao In all seriousness though, amazing stuff, hope to see more!

Excellent content here for new and returning players trying to level up their game. I've always been a big proponent of calculating probabilities rather than going off gut instinct, and to have that deck building philosophy confirmed as the proper methodology is nice to see. Too many players these days will net deck, test online or at events, and make decisions based on those experiences alone, but as you've shown, that's not enough if you want to truly be successful.

I think gut feeling is extremely important as well. Once you play with the list for a while. Fine tuning the ratios based on what feels strongest can be a big help.

Some guy on youtube (forgot his weird channel name) taught me to not use cards that only do one thing. I can't thank him enough, that took my play to a whole other level. (not that I'm any good still, but I'm way better than I ever was). It's surprising seeing the amount of people who don't know this advice, like they have the most scuffed cards in their decks when they can put in something more versatile instead.

Really liked this video. Most of my experience is with Magic, where decks basically never go above the limit, so I always wondered why so many in Yugioh were okay with having decks with any extra cards. Bricks really do make a big difference.

I once played a Deck Years with I think was Upstart Goblin in it. It was now 41 Cards. I didn't realy needed to include the 41st card but with it I drew almost always perfect but with that single card cut to 40 it seems never to get me a good starting hand. When deck building I always try to cut to 40 but mostly I am, ending up with 41 to 43 cards because I never knew what to cut. So such type of videos are very helpful. Thanks.

I really liked this video, hopefully there will be more like this. Building a deck with reason and logic reduces the importance of luck and increase the value of skill, so you will win more games, and if you lose you don't even feel bad because you know you did everything you could and the opponent was just better that time.

Pot of Desires example is hard because part of it's use case is avoiding losing the +1, which drawing another copy of will mean you have the variance concerns of the banish 10 for an upstart goblin. You have to include not only opening multiple but then the odds of drawing another copy in the draw 2 which is weighted with the possibilities of banishing those copies in the banish 10. Might not change the final answer but definitely increases the probability of the negative outcome

The banish 10 cost doesn't affect the probability of drawing another copy of Desires. It would be the same math as drawing the 11th and 12th cards from the top instead of the 1st and 2nd from the top. For decks that can use Desires, it's largely the same question as running 3 Pot of Greed if it was legal with a hard once per turn.

Interesting insight. I had roughly figured this out myself when I built my most recent deck. I went by the same logic you used (and explained) for your gouki deck, my deck was 45 cards, the amount of "bricks" remained the same, but the extenders, enablers and disruption cards had been increased and the deck ran extremely consistent during the last event I took it to. I had the feeling that my build was the correct way to go, but it was super interesting to hear the math and details behind why it was correct and especially that point about going over 40, how it can be the more consistent option for some decks. For anyone interested, I took Cyber-Spright to YCS Sydney, I missed out on day 2 due to losing in the final round of day 1. It wasn't because of the deck (I had the cards I needed to win that match, even had the card in hand to do so when I needed it, I just brain fogged and didn't use it). Oh well, live and learn and hopefully do better next time.

I really love that almost an entire video was spent going over the importance of ratios in deckbuilding. It's almost never as clear cut as keeping deck size to exactly 40 cards, or playing things at exactly 1 or 3, especially if you're playing a deck that doesn't want to see specific cards in its opening hand or in any draws made before a certain combo is played out.

I think Yugioh is one of those things. The best way to learn and improve is to DO IT, to practice in the real world. Kinda like basketball. Ultimately reading from a book how to play isn't gonna do much. As someone who plays rouge decks I didn't think I could get used to going against Tearlaments, but I did and now I don't mind them that much.

I can relate to this. Even back in highschool when GOAT was the reality rather than a format, I was building my decks using maths. Recently got back into YGO, got overwhelmed by all of the changes but powered through. Put together a Winged Dragon of Ra deck that's pretty simple but quite effective. Refined it to 50 cards as it has too many bricks and used it to explore modern YGO. Now, after I got familiar with the modern landscape, I'm slowly building my new deck for a more competitive scene.

Heart of the Cards was literally just Yami using his Millennium Item to cheat in the card game to win. Most people don't realize this because the anime does a great job of selling the idea that it's because he just believes in his deck so much that the deck somehow just comes through for him when he needs it, but he was just cheating with power of ancient Egyptian magic. All the Millennium items had some kind of super power and the Puzzle's was magic cheating. Thank you for explaining some of the probability and theory behind "proper" deck building. It's always amazing to hear how some of the best to touch a game go about the process of competing.

@@jobejacobs62 yes, probability and luck are not cheating, but magically forcing the exact card you need to win a game to the top of your deck is. That is what the "Heart of the Cards" is. It's just magically willing that exact card to the top of the deck when he needs it.
