One blank page is nothing compared to the "great" idea a publisher thought of last Christmas. There was a book, which they wanted to be a part of the Christmas sale, but the book wasn't ready yet, so what they did was they printed the first chapter in the book and left ALL the other pages blank and the idea was that you could buy the unfinished book and inside we (the employees) would make a giftcard and put it in a little plastic folder on the back of the front cover. Then when the full book came out you could come in and exchange the giftcard for the full book. That was ridiculous and a total waste of resources! They wanted to see how it went with that book and maybe use the method with other books aswell. My boss refused to put our copies on the shelves. Luckily we haven't seen anything like that since.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when the dust jacket wasn't cut right, and so a part of the back of the dust jacket shows on the part that covers the spine. It isn't lined up right. It looks terrible and has stopped me from buying the book before because I just can't stand to look at anything that isn't lined up properly. Do you get what I mean? It's like the one who did the cutting or folding just didn't care about where the folds go or anything like that. And you can't just fold it to fit, cause there are creases already in the paper! Makes me so mad! It's happened a few times on paperbacks too, but not as often.
@SnorriSnibble7 жыл бұрын
Amanda K I hate that, too! I've only seen this on english books, though. My german books have perfectly fitting dust jackets, but my english copies of The Raven King and the ADSOM trilogy are just way too big, there is so much space between book and dust jacket. Someone folded them wrong and the books always tend to fall out of it 😟
@LostInThought4ever7 жыл бұрын
Ugh, that would be so annoying! And putting the series together on the shelf when some of the dust jackets don't fit right makes the whole thing look sloppy. Some are snug, others bubble out weird. :( I guess the people who oversee putting the books together just don't care. They need to hire some perfectionists to make sure it's all straight. lol

It's either super tiny, and squished to the side, or the author's name takes up more space than the title itself! #2 Pet Peeve: Those jagged edges...WHY DO THEY EXIST?! I want to rub my hands down the smooth pages, not potentially stab myself with paper! #3 Pet Peeve: Those blank pages at the end that give you hope that there's more to the book, but NOPE! I love blank pages in books! They still count for the page count and you don't have anything to do, you're just one page further with no wortk! It's like in board games when it lets you skip some of the fields. I love it. I also love when at the end of a chapter there's like only a few lines on the page and then it skips to the next for the next chapter. Free progress!

ALL of these are SUPER relatable!!! And all of the comments down are super relatable too! I have nothing to say other than that you are so right about these pet peeves! Bc all us bookworms have the same problems but still enjoy a good book(aka a book that messed with our emotions, occasionally destroying us). And yes please! Do a vid about pet peeves inside books! Or cliches or smthn! I love all your vids, and I think that that is a great idea!

I've read a book that when a chapter ends you turn the page and the page on the left is blank. For EVERY chapter

Those soft covers there they fray along the edges and the plastic coating (?) starts to separate! Soft covers where it's almost impossible not to make a ridge in the spine reading it (I find that a lot with uk books). Cover changes in the middle of publishing a series! I'm sure more will come to me 😂😂😂

My biggest pet peeve is when I let someone borrow my book and they dog ear the HELL out of it or just bring it back to me like the stuffed it in the bottom of the bag. Then , when I lend someone a book and they don't even bother cracking it open. I remember letting my friend borrow my book, and she said she never had to time to read it. There's ALWAYS time to read.

I knew where you were going with that first one before you got there, and I so agree! Having finger prints all over books makes me so mad.

Blank pages are the worst! Great vid as always Jesse. I'm wasting my precious reading time on this but nevermind. It's always worth it! Keep doing these vids!

One of my biggest bookish pet peeve is when the dust jacket of a book is just too big and is constantly falling and basically annoying the crap out of me

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE FIRST ONE - it's also on three dark crowns and it drives me crazy!

Truthfully when I look at books for the description I turn it to the back it would be nice if all books had the description on the back and not just paperbacks

Biggest physical bookish pet peeve: not be able to remove the "now a motion picture" sticker that's printed on the cover! IT'S THE WORST!

My biggest pet peev is an end nubbin. It's when the corners of book covers ball up into little corner nubs and it's not all smooth and it bothers me bc it makes me feel like I'm not taking care of my book

The second one yes!!! That annoys me so much!!! When I pick up any book I go straight the back and I get mad cause all I want to do is find out what the book is about! And my friends go "its is in the inside" and "I'm like I know but when I pick up a book I go straight to the back don't ask why I just do"

Please do a pet peeves video about content within books, it would be great. Also I relate to all of these so much omg.

So much agree on the blurbs at the back of the book instead of the description of the book because then I have to check the description thru my phone.

when the page number is moved with the new chapter pages. i can understand when the new chapter has a little illustration at the start, i.e. Potter, but if it's in the top corner on most pages but gets put on the top when it's a new chapter i just want to scream.

Book marks that make it so you can’t put the book back on the shelf or in the box it came in if is a series. I hope that made sense. Love your videos Jesse!

When there are stickers on the book covers.... drives me up the wall! Then there is residue on my book cover or nail marks from me picking it off

I used to hate those blank double sided pages that you see near the front or the end of books! You know those pages that I''m talking about? When I was little, I used to rip those pages out and I made my own little book with them so they wouldn't be wasted paper!
@ThatIckyGuy5 жыл бұрын
I agree with your point on footnotes, but the Discworld series makes good use of them because there are a lot of extra jokes that get played out in the footnotes and are often hilarious.

When you buy a book thinking it will be the same size as the other books on your shelves, then you place it on said shelf, and BAM! It's either too big, too small, too wide or too tall.

I hate it when they don't number series and I'm with you on the back. Every time I find a book like that, I'm forced to read the first few pages and if it's in a series, there can be serious spoilers.
