It is to rework it into having a different feeling and convey a different meaning than the original song. It's a totally different style and tone and gives a completely new feeling to it, it isn't supposed to be a "better" version, it changes the message of it.

holy shit, I can't believe how good that is! I'm very familiar with the original Depeche Mode version, but this is just so haunting. It brings me to tears every time I listen to it. This song is fantastic. I’ve gotten into a lot of bands through The Last of Us because as someone who didn’t really listen to music for a long time it’s really hard to get into music. I just though what should I even listen to? This cover is the most beautiful song I have ever listened to. It makes me tear up. This show is absolutely brilliant and the music choice is as well. Jessica Mazin sung this song perfectly. It truly made me feel emotions that I never felt listening to a song before.
