Jessica Pratt has quickly become one of the most talked about musicians of the new year. The Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter is due to release her new album, On Your Own Love Again at the end of January. Her meditative folk music has drawn comparisons to Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell and Joanna Newsom. So, we at The 13th Floor were thrilled to find out she was making a brief visit to New Zealand where she just played a show at Auckland’s Golden Dawn. If you missed it, don’t fret, Jessica stopped by The 13th Floor to talk to Marty Duda and play a couple of songs from her highly-anticipated album.

her speaking voice is so different from her singing voice. I always wonder where her singing voice came about. it’s so beautifully, painfully unique. ♥️😭

Jessica's genius is the antidote to our flawed "modern age" Her music has accompanied me through the darkest of moments in my life - I am forever grateful and my life is so much richer now with her music in it. I wish her the best and truly hope she knows how much her music means to the few of us who discover it and embrace it.

Surprised at the harsh comments for the interviewer. People seem to judge the guy based on his appearance, which is offensive. He was prepared with specific questions, picked spots to ask the right followed up questions and did his research.

Like a fairy from a flowered bower; a pale sylph singing the sweetest songs from her fairyland of unique chords and melodies. I think I've fallen into a dew-drop dream.

The new album is wonderful. I totally appreciate her sound and the melancholic influences. I have always resonated with the same type of music which ascends from the very depths of the soul. I was just waiting for her to mention Nick Drake in this interview and she didn't let me down, haha. He is a hero of mine too!

the guy tried his best but i think he was a little insecure about talking to her. she needs someone who can break through her own inner-dialogue to interview her

+Greg Hunt I see what you mean, but time limitations and politeness factor into that. It can't turn into a therapy session. It's best to allow her to take the conversation where she wants. It was good for her to get that breathing room.

Yeh, he sounds like a Councillor at one point; 'you mentioned that a lot of your songs are sad, is that a state of mind you find yourself continually in?'. She is such a sweetheart though and handled it well. I'm really enjoying the new album also, it's great.

Ha I almost quoted that part too...so silly. It's like the the same oblivious patronizing questions journalists were asking musicians in the sixties, only now they're wearing fedoras so we know they're cool.

Marty Duda.A US Expat who runs an excellent music site called the 13th floor. In fact it is the prime music info site in N Z.Have a look at it.The guy is no mug.The other important music critic based in NZ is Graham Reid, who llike Marty Duda,is an expat, from Scotland. He has a site called From Elsewhere, which is also excellent.Do not judge a book by its cover.
