This song would tear up any one's vocals! And rhey made her sing it live non stop! This is why I don't fault singers who dodge their notes or play a heavy backing track for the hard stuff. Recording is one thing but to sing it live on tour is literally begging for permanent vocal damage
@katehu7194 Жыл бұрын
It's so rough to be in the industry! Personally, I would not mind paying top dollar if concerts became even rarer: like artists only perform like 20-30 times a year as opposed to 50-100. Singing is supposed to be a stress relief not a strain and stressor. So sad. But that's supply and demand and immorality/inhumanity of society for ya! I just hope Jessica had some moments of genuine enjoyment and fun on her tours, because it is serious hard work.

Good old days, such a waste honestly, she had so much potential and great soprano voice. I don't get why did she choose to change her technique, espeically considering she actually had the better technique earlier during Broadway, much like Britney actually, they both used to have the potential but after entering to pop-music they were forced to using shitty technique, no surprise she retired from singing career and she doesn't perform that song live anymore. Although it's a bit too sweet for my taste but still a powerful ballad

I'm sorry but I love this song and also live performances. Yes, with screaming and straining, as you call it, in earlier versions with young Jassica. This is what gives this rather sweat and boring ballade the depth it got with Jessica singing it, she is singing this pop song as it is a power rock ballade. She is not crying for a guy, she is screaming with anger and desperation, it makes also all sense with the lyrics. And yes, I guess performances like that, this is what ruined her voice at the end, but she was working and giving it all. Still love this song, now 20 years later.

Those sustained notes were solid through the years. Yes, she's oversinging. They all did in those days. Everyone of them. She did great even doing that live so many times without tuning it to her needs. With a good coach and enough rest she would have evolved. These late-90s girls had to follow up 2 solid decades of divas from singing school with opera training and a gospel background. I'd say in Jessica's era that kind of training and background stopped even though Jessica did at least have a background singing at church.
