I so wish Jessica had proper vocal training when she first started out. This is the type of song that only a trained vocalist should even attempt to sing. That bridge is INSANE. To have to sing in that octave for an extended period of time is no easy task. Jessica has a big voice, but she was singing in her chest voice the entire time...not good! I wish someone came to her and taught her how to mix well so that she can be able to sing in that key in a healthy way. I wish her nothing but the best though because I heard she's working on new music but it's a shame that she can never really sing this song live anymore.

To me the problem is not that her notes are chesty but they have so much tension and all carried in her throat, theres no fluidity, shes pushing the hell of it, but such a gorgeous voice!!! Her voice with a technique like Mariahs it would work SO much for her

Jessica has a huge voice, but has absolutely no idea how to properly use it. This song is actually decent technique-full voice open throat belting. In other recordings like, “Take my breath Away”, her belting becomes very nasal and sang from the very back of her throat. As she got more famous, her label encouraged her to sing in a pop sounding, light, and very airy voice. IF you watched The nick and Jessica show, there was one episode where she came home crying because during the recording of “Sweetest Sin” her label told her to tone it down, that it was too soulful.

Why did her and Britney get pushed into singing in that nasal breathy style? Christina didn't ever change her singing style. Britney had a pretty deepy jazzy alto that she tossed aside.

But even here you can hear the bad technique in a lot of the belts, specially those long midbelts. They tried to hide with some reverbing (I think that's the word), etc, so you can't tell but if you pay attention you can clearly hear the strain.

The song is very “Mariah-esque” because Mariah’s ex-husband/Song Entertainment CEO of the time, Tommy Motolla, wanted to find the “next” Mariah. He actually discovered Jessica Simpson and said she sounded like Mariah so he signed her right away and came out with all these ballads/pop ballads rather than the bubblegum pop sound that Britney and Christina were doing. Check out Jessica’s “I️Think I’m In Love”.. it literally sounds like Mariah’s “Fantasy” lol!!

I remember the exact first moment I saw this music video on MTV back in late 1999 in my college dorm room and it was like midnight and MTV would have their "spankin new" videos and when she came on I was like wow she is going to be the next Mariah Carey then I saw she was on Columbia Records as Mariah was almost out the door at Columbia. Now I know you're not going to believe it but this was her very first song and she sang it live just like this every time but as you stated she had bad technique and this wasn't an easy song. So basically it was the decline of her voice. The crazy thing is how HIGH the tessitura in the bridge is. It'd be one thing if the climax had ONE big belted note, but the whole bridge is pretty much phrased high belted notes (phrased E5s and F#5s) and it's INSANELY hard to sing in its original key. I'd say this song is harder than any song from Christina's debut album for example.

After this song came out Jessica Simpson was in everyone's eyes because like I stated everyone knew this song was very hard to execute live which she did all the time. In a popular magazine that came out featuring her that was the headline "Jessica Simpson! The next Mariah Carey?" Then people started comparing her to Mariah like Leona Lewis was when she came out. Jessica also stated she loved Mariah Carey as well. So no.. It's no joke.

I'm late to this one but glad you reacted to it. She has been known to have not the best technique at times but when she is on it, she is on it. She experimented with country music a few years back and put out an album. I'm not a huge country music fan but the album itself was decent. She did a song called "Remember That" and I could have sworn that it was Carrie Underwood at first. Anyhoo, I'm rambling now. The potential to become an amazing vocalist was clearly there, but the label probably was looking for a certain sound at the time and they just made her sing like that without proper vocal coaching, still think she sounded great but you could tell it was a big vocal effort, it didn't feel effortless like debut Mariah for example.
