Hi, Everyone! I'm making a scrappy trip around the world quilt and wanted to share with you how I make a block.
A few things I refer to in the video-
The fabric I'm using is called Holiday Cheer by My Mind's Eye for Riley Blake Designs. This collection is due to arrive in quilt shops in May 2023.
Bonnie Hunter's original scrappy trip around the world tutorial- quiltville.blo...
Alli Jenson's Scrappy Trip Around the World quilt along- www.woodberryw...
If you have any questions, leave them in the comments.
Thanks for watching!

Great job. I like the idea of making quarters. Then, they joined them together. Also to avoid the big square in the middle you could choose an alternate focus fabric and fussy cut or even your middle color of the strip.

Another great tutorial--thanks Jessica! I suppose it is a catch-22 thing…I would probably dial down my stitch length to under 2.0 to keep the seams from unraveling, but then probably harder to pick out the seam. Hmmm…

When strip piecing, especially, using a smaller stitch length eliminates a lot of your seams coming open. I use at a maximum 2.0, most often 1.8. They are slightly harder to pick out, but worth not having to worry about your seams being compromised. Thanks for the great tutorial.

It always cracks me up that to "unpick" a seam is the same as to "pick" a seam and remove it. Like in raveling and unraveling. The fabric will ravel, which is called unraveling. English is a fascinating language!

@@jessica_dayon the center of the round the world is one color then each row around the center is a different color. And it continues until it is as big as you want. I’m thinking it will be very similar to others that take the quilt into quarters.

That sounds line a traditional Trip Around the World where you end to with one distinct center square, then the rest of the diagonals ‘radiate’ from that enter. There are dozens of tutorials on KZbin for that quilt design, it’s very traditional (the only thing is, you work usually with larger squares and much longer columns of squares, which I find can get a bit unwieldy. But still lovely!)

What is the quilt behind you called, it is very pretty? Also for trip around the world I thought the idea was to have the same colors lining up to create that effect so the diagonal should be the same color correct? I have not made one of these yet but have seen many tutorials. The strip piecing with the tube is by far the quickest method I have seen.
@jessica_dayon

The quilt behind me is called the Nona quilt. I’m doing a free quilt along for it and you can find the free pattern on weallsew.com For the scrappy trip around the world, you can use the same color diagonal so that you have a one color chain running through or you can choose to have it random. Both versions are still considered a scrappy trip around the world.

So I like this video a lot and I do have one question but it may be my crazy brain! When you fold the initial sewn strips and sew into a tube before cutting...what would happen if you did not close into a tube and just folded, then cut the 2 inch strips...seems like you would not have to pick out the seam then...am I losing it?
@jessica_dayon
@jessica_dayon 9 ай бұрын
When you unpick the seams, you do so at a different spot every time so it wouldn't work to just not sew the tube closed. So the first strip, you unpick at square one, the second at square two, and so on. That is how you get the diagonal design in the block.

If you I pick the wrong one early in the sequence, and you noticed how she got one upside down, well maybe your mistake will work later in the sequence, so swap it to that position and try again with the piece that belonged there, checking carefully. In case the second half of the block is the first half flipped over, I mean. But it may not be. Depends on your colours

Great tutorial! Just found you on KZbin!! If I use a whole jelly roll, do you know how big the quilt will be? Would I need two jelly rolls?? I want to try this… thanks Jessica!

I use the amount equal to 2 jelly rolls. That will give me 20 blocks. I'll lay it out 4 blocks by 5 blocks and the quilt will measure 64" x 80".

Don't you alternate the direction you sew strips to avoid curving the strips?

I don't. You could try that out if you have trouble the other way.
