❤The third blue top that you did isn't actually a dress but kind of a tunic that is worn by Indian women and is called a KURTA. We pair these with some trousers , or even skirts. And the design isn't really vintage but a machine copy of one of India's oldest embroidery techniques known as "chikan Kari" You can google "kurta" "chikan Kari" and you'll know. So in love with all your videos!!

Another way to handle embroidery is to place a different embroidered patch over the logo. I got some cutesy animal patches and covered the name of an old workplace so I could continue wearing my old scrubs at new jobs. This was easier than picking out embroidery and many times, the fabric can be damaged or faded around a heavily embroidered logo so this works for those situations as well.

Seamripping tip: of you find yourself getting annoyed with it, stop, and come back later. When I get annoyed, I get impatient, and I start cutting through the fabric. If you're cutting through thick fabrics with any frequency, you should also consider investing in a 60 mm rotary cutter. I got a nice ergonomic Olfa like 50% in a closing sale, and it's amazing for things like double layers of fleece. Also, always measure twice, cut once.

OMG i recently did a thrift flip myself, i kinda messed up but it’s still wearable, i read somewhere that perfection is the enemy of progress, so i’ll keep on practicing it doesn’t have to be perfect. Your thrift flips were amazing and Luna in the back, the cherry on top.

I learned on KZbin that seamripping a straight seam works better if you insert the shorter and less pointy of the two needles - you can just slide trough the seam.

an easier way to keep a hem is to just fold the garment up to where you want it to be(inside folding to out), sew around the end of the hem, then cut out the fold in the middle. Takes less cutting and does the exact same thing!

This is a cool video. I think you can show people how to patch over the embroidery on the first one but I love the second one the most. All you needed was a quilting ruler (long ruler) and you could have cut that straight. Thanks for showing us.

Yup that's a machine embroidered chikankari kurta. Chikankari is a specific type of embroidery originated in Lucknow, India. This embroidery even have a Geographical Indications tag.

Great video, Jess! My pile of projects/alterations/thrift flips has gotten kinda stagnant, so this video should spur me on to get going and start wearing and enjoying the stuff! Thanks for tipping me off to the rotary cutter, went straight to Amazon to order it, now I can’t wait to try it out❣️ 🙂

You'll need a self-healing mat and a clear quilting ruler. Please watch some videos about rotary cutters - this was an example of very dangerous technique. Like mandolins in the kitchen, rotary cutters must be respected - very useful but very dangerous if not handled correctly.

The skirt could be made fuller by cutting it in half height wise and making it a tier in a skirt. It would be more wearable if it was a bit longer and fuller. I can't sit ladylike anymore so those types of skirts don't work for me. It would take a coordinating garment though. A patchwork skirt might work to. They're popular now but might not go as well with the top.

for the sweatshirt (#2) you could have just took a chunk out of the middle and kept the bottom piece intact with the patch and bottom as-is. idk if that makes sense, but you can try that next time! :) cool flips!

If she did this she would have a sewing line going directly through the middle of the piece
@teagan_p_999
@teagan_p_999 Жыл бұрын
Yeah you could, but her way is better, as the seamline is hidden right next to the hem, rather than being visible in the middle somewhere.

fyi: Rotary cutters are extremely SHARP! They will go through the skin on your fingertips to the bone so fast you will hardly know what has happened until copious amounts of blood are flowing. No reason to ask me why I know this is there? Wear a protective glove on the hand not holding the cutter which are sold in the quilting section of your craft store or online. Also, make sure to buy a rotary cutter that closes automatically. it's worth the extra few dollars you're spending if you accidently knock it off the table and it bounces off your foot.

I like how you're afraid of stabbing yourself when you are taking the sweatshirt off while I personally am more worried about the pin falling out. I hate having to pin twice. That's the only thing in sewing that irritates me.
